  • I knew I shouldn't of watched this, totally ruined the end for me of the story. I haven't yet finished it.

  • Good Mr. Rochester need the Jane Eyre from 1997

  • Hae

  • I reeeeeally wish that they had done wat lyf was lyk afta their PERMANENT wedding dat would be even beta

    Or i'm just a big dreamer..LOL

  • Love at the end when she doesn't answer lol

  • i love this version of jane eyre soo much. it might not cater exactly to the book but i still love it.

  • Shiny, shiny, shiny... Can't do justice to the book if he looks like they've been grooming him on set for hours. Ugh.

  • I love how Jane's finally taking this oportunity to mess with HIS head! God knows he had it coming!

Edward: Were there only ladies in the house?

    Jane: ... *silence*

    Edward: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-

  • Waaaaat...this movie is not bad! Its the best one!!

  • i don t understand why people say this version is so bad. i really like it. every single adaption of the book has its flaws but also it s unique sides. well except for the 2011 version. i loved fasbender as rochester but they ruined the end totally. the most heartmoving part and they did it in a 2 min shot...just disappointing. really sad : / this one instead was awesome :)

  • @koppsr I completely agree. I just saw the 2011 version for the first time. The ending left me wanting more, so I came on here to watch this scene again. Such a better ending!

  • I cant understand how they could even dream of remaking this - the movie is just not even CLOSE to this good! He made me cry in this!

  • I really don't see how Jane is "plain" and Rochester "ugly"! I think that they are the two most beautiful people on Earth right now! They look like the happiest couple!

  • You know, I love how these love scenes are not cliche? Jane doesn't sound all mushy or weepy... they sound like a good couple that understands each other!

  • Beautiful scene... I luv this movie soooooo much!!! Sorry, but the 2011 version's got nothing on this xD

  • I LOVE how he grabs her and chokes "No. . stay" . . and the more he realises he's not dreaming the more he cries . . . and how she stays so sensible through the whole thing and he's an emotional wreck :)

  • haha i love how Jane just messes with him the entire time XD

  • Omg I'm crying so much...! I'm so glad I watched this before my teacher showed it, otherwise I'd be a mess by third bell.!!!

  • @NYXitup same i totally agree with u im so glad aswell i was in tears when i wached this this was so cute i think that ruth and toby would look like a real good couple in real life also 1 disslike who would disslike this this i beautifall :'(

  • I just love Ruth and Toby as Jane and Edward. They have such an amazing chemistry together and I love how playful they are with each other. It feels like you're watching a real relationship. Even when they're reunited they're teasing each other and I love that!

And the look on Toby's face from 3:15-3:28 is just golden!

  • AWWW I LOVE THIS BIT! I LOVE THIS BIT!

  • so touching!!! brings me to tears!!!

  • His facial expression when he asked if there were only ladies in the house she stayed in while away was too cute. this scene never fails to make me cry. Best Rochester and Jane save Susanna York and George Scott.

  • Best Rochester ever!!!! Toby rules. He really acts . We respect you Mr. Stephens.

  • @ravenel2 In the book he does ask for candles because he can see a little light a some objects hazily.

  • "am I hideous jane?"

"very, sir. You always were you know?"

    Best Reunion ever!!!

  • This movie has never made me cry before! And I've seen it countless times! I love this movie! <3 The last time I watched it I was bawling! And I've cried every time I've watched this video since then!

  • Favorite part of the whole movie is when he asks her "You are real?" I thought that was sweet, it made me cry! lol! and when she kissed him and said does that seem real, "You always did torment me!" Great acting in this scene by Toby Stephens! his facial expressions, and the way he plays a blind man are amazing! He by far was the best Rochester and these two were by far the best Jane and Rochester! love Jane Eyre!

  • i thought she was to be 'Plain' and he an 'ugly man' their both attractive. i love this scene give me hope

  • Such a beautiful ending.. Just seen the one one, crap!! This is the best:) It really shows his love for Jane even thought he thinks she is a ghost.. LOVE IT;D

  • This scene wants to make me cry!!! So beautiful, touching, and romantic!!

  • Toby Stephens. What an amazing actor. I cry every time.

  • he is so cute "Were there only ladies at the house you were"

THANK YOU CHARLOTTE BRONTE FOR CREATING SUCH A MAN AND THANK YOU TOBY STEPHENS FOR BEING SUCH A MAN

  • I LOVE how he cries! It shows such passion! I SWOON EVERYTIME I SEE IT!

  • @Girl4Happiness me too!!! *tear*

  • 1:07 when he shouts "Where are my candles?" Pilot looks at him as if to say, "I don't know master - eeek, stop shouting!"

Such a tender love Jane has for Rochester. This scene always always touches me. Toby is such a good actor, as is Ruth Wilson. Thanks for sharing this.

  • I was a little girl when I watched this and I remember almost bursting out in tears when I realised Rochester was blind but hey at least he gets Jane in the end.

  • Jane Eyre and The three musqueteers (Dumas) are my absolutely favourite books for all time. Because the meaning line is friendship humanity and last but not least: LOVE.

And as John Lennon said: All you need is LOve

  • These two perfectly display a relationship that is very strange. It is so hard to get the chemistry right between two seemingly different characters. Whatever the problems with this version, I think the Jane/Rochester chemistry is spot on, which is why its my favorite.

  • So romantic. I love how emotional he gets

  • Rochester: Jane were there only ladies at the house that you where in ......?

    Jane:.....silence......

    0x0x

  • I love Jane's teasing:

    "Am I hideous Jane?"

"Very, sir! You always were, you know."

  • I died inside when Rochester says, "George, that is you, isn't it?"

And then when Jane kissed him--it just broke my heart.

  • when i read this part of the book, i cried nonstop...

  • It seems a bit watered down to the version with Ciaran Hinds and Samantha Morton. It will be interesting to see what the new 2011 Jane Eyre will bring.

  • @MavenOTF They keep redoing it, don't they? When does it stop? Doesn't it ever get old, overthere in the U.K.?

  • God their kissing scenes are abominable.

  • Emily Bronte OR Charlotte Bronte?

(ie. Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre? It's too bloody hard!)

  • @rebe1angel Charlotte. I wanted to throw Wuthering Heights at the wall too many times because ALL the characters were unbearable (and yes I know that was her intention). The writing of the two books was beautiful though so I give kudos to both authors.

  • @lazydreamereyes I agree, Wuthering Height's can be a tough read. I think Jane Eyre is ALOT more satisfying because of the ending, and it's impossible not to admire and love the strong character of Jane, where-as Heathcliff/Cathy share such a selfish, obsessive, intense relationship...but the tragedy is they have to hide their true feeling's from each other...they are soulmates who can never be together, ripped apart by so much hate...

I LOVE both stories. I can't choose! lol

  • For me, Toby Stephens IS Rochester in the same way that Colin Firth IS Mr. Darcy.

One thing Colin and Toby have in common is that they both cry very convincingly onscreen. (Of course, Darcy doesn't cry, but check out some other Colin films.)

  • the book was so beautiful. i was addicted to it. i always thought than romance with an older man made it more interesting. how sweet! and seriously, it could make someone cry when they read the ending. *crying in the backround*

  • This scene was okay

but i loved the scene from the 83 version...i cried like a baby

  • haha ouch Jane, walking out of the room without answering his question XD

  • i wasn't very emotional in the books, but I gotta admit, that made me cry.

  • the look on rochester's face when he hears her voice is amazing! i started to cry :L

  • 1 person is Blanche Ingram

  • God, I love this scene. The music is so beautiful and the actors so sensitive. From a movie perspective, though, I wonder why they had him ask for candles--being blind and having already had two atrocious experiences with fire, I would think candles would be the last thing Rochester would want. It's like they wanted a candle in the shot to show light and hope and beauty, but they felt they had to explain it somehow! Don't think he asks for candles in the book!

  • @ravenel2 He does ask for candles in the book

  • @angle021 -- Does he really? My mistake -- I thought it was a movie thing. I'll have to go read that part!

  • @ravenel2 Yeah, it's mentioned in one sentence I believe. I think it's one of the maids or someone who mentions this to Jane before she goes in the room and sees him.

  • @angle021 --Charlotte, what were you thinking. If Jane hadn't come back, Ferndean would have gone up in flames for sure.

  • I feel more sorry for poor Bertha

  • @GulagGuro If you haven't already read it "The Wide Sargasso Sea" makes Bertha out to be a very sympathetic character.

  • I suddenly realise, how can a dog be called Pilot, when there were no pilots in that time? What was a pilot in those days?

  • @Artemisss1 Pilotage is actually one of the oldest professions, going all the way back to ancient Greece and Rome. It is related to ships not airplanes. A pilot is a mariner who guides ships through dangerous or congested waters, such as harbours or river mouths.

  • Comment removed

  • @teaandagoodbook Allright, I didn't know that. I always thought that the person in control on a ship was called a captain? Are they the same person, or is there a difference? (Thanks for explaining, btw.)

  • @Artemisss1 There is a difference. Pilots are under the authority of the captain or shipmaster. Pilots were usually experienced mariners with particular knowledge of the local waters where they plied their trade. They were locally experienced harbour captains, mainly local fishermen, employed by incoming ships' captains to bring their trading vessels into port safely. (All of this is in relation to merchant vessels. I don't know if military/naval terms are different).

  • @teaandagoodbook Okay, I see. One learns everyday. ^^ Thank you!

  • @Artemisss1 Your welcome. I asked the same question when I first read the book. I can't believe how long ago that was! =D

  • who the heck would dislike this scene??

love Mr. Rochester! esp when he cries from surprise/joy!!

  • I love this bit. It's so touching and romantic and lovely. I keep rewatching it.

Btw, can somebody tell me what Mr. Rochester says at 3:10, right after they kiss? Thank you!

  • @Artemisss1 I believe it's "You always did torment me."

And I agree, it's altogether very romantic, and brilliantly acted as well :)

It seems one has to rewatch it.

  • @globbelobben Thank you!

  • Although I enjoyed this adaptation of J.E when I first watched it, it was only after seeing it again a few more times that I now regard it as one of my favorite version! I've compared it closely to the book, and I think its quite loyal to it with its own interpretation and for that I am glad!

  • She looks so mortified when she realizes he's blind.

  • "Am I hideous Jane?"

"Very Sir. You always were you know."

    :D

  • No, no, the 1970 version is best in this scene.

  • @peperudi No version is better than this! the chemistry between the actors plus the really good acting makes this version unique and the best version of Jane Eyre (though it skips some parts of the book i still find it the best portrayal of Jane and Mr Rochester)

  • @gemgem828 thats the point...have you even read the book?

  • @gemgem828 Oh my god, are you blind or just a Troll?

  • I think they are wonderful actors, he's especially very convincing. This was one of my favourite childhood books and this is the best serie done from it.

  • AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW ROCHESTER!!!!!!!!! T-T *squeeeeeee*

  • I love the chemistry of these two actors, they are really good :)

  • "I nerver take supper."

"Well you shall tonight...I am hungry!"

    hehe!

  • i cried only at this part at school XD

  • i love this movie and the book also

    wonderful poetic amazing

  • sevişin lan...

  • I have seen this seen in every single Jane Eyre ever filmed and this...is the best...I cried and cried and cried...

  • awww i absolutely love this scene. the actors did amazing! Way to go Toby! pulling off a blind man had GOT to be way harder than it looks. But you did it beautifully! totally believable!

i love when jane wipes his chin and hes like "wait a minute......" hahaha and also when he wants to know if there were "only ladies" XD XD <3 rochester

  • hahaha he looks so agitated! He really wants to kno!

  • i wish that scene had continued ..... I laughed so hard when I read the book and realized he was jealous of St. John!

  • This is such an amazing clip...I've lost count of how many times I've watched it. The brilliance with which Toby Stephens conveys Rochester's longing for Jane, the subtle facial expressions, how he breaks down with tears of joy once he realizes it's really her. And Ruth Wilson just glows-she's so GOOD at conveying the deep love, joy and passion she feels too. GAWD I LOVE this scene!!! Thanks SO much for uploading it.

  • "Jane, were there only ladies at the house you have been?" and she just walks away. :D ahaha i laughed at that!

  • In the book he has jet black hair. :(

  • apparently anyone can just waltz right into any ol mansion whenever they want back in those days

  • I just got finished reading this book today and it was so good

  • i think toby stephens looks too old ...

  • @Geeniusss0120

    he's 20 years her senior.

  • @Geeniusss0120 Isn't Rochester supposed to be old? I mean compared to Jane. Isn't he like almost 40.

  • @aquagrl63 you must still be young. toby stephens (the actor playing rochester) is in his late 30s. close enough to 40.

  • @aprilpat95 - Toby Stephens was born in April 1969, so he was about 36 during the filming. Ruth Wilson was 24 but looks younger.

  • @aquagrl63 Well, in the book, he is about 40, and Jane is about 20, so.

  • The best part in the entire book is when Rochester asks Jane if there were only ladies where she was staying when she left him. :) I laughed so hard!

God I love Jane Eyre - its so romantic! I just smile with tears in my eyes! :)

  • By far the best part of the whole thing!

  • I love this book, I guess it's been too long since I read it because I'm very annoyed at the parts that are missing and the parts that are added in. I guess as a whole the movies each have their strengths, but none of them ever capture the full beauty of the main elements of love and Christianity. In the book, before she agrees to marry him, he accepts Christ; that's one reason I loved the book so much; besides some ironies, it was realistic and wholesome.

  • I'm a little disappointed there wasn't more between the first time she sees him and the time she walks in the room. In the book there is a very beautiful part where Jane simply looks at him before asking for the water to bring to Mr Rochester- besides that, this is my absolute most favorite scene EVER, in book or in movie!

  • i have seen several versions of jane eyre, and this for me its the best one. Absolutely love this Rochester :)

  • Love this version, but I hate that they always skimp out on the injuries. The Dalton version, bless it's loyal little heart, is the only version out of the 5 I've seen to have gone all the way, even adding some shag to Rochester's hair in a nod to Jane's line about how dishevled he'd gotten. Oh well. At least I've got Toby Stephens here, so I'm not complaining lol

  • i loooooove how mr r. cries! i luv guys that can cry, plus i like how he seems to need her more than she him. usually it's the other way 'round.

  • @rockurworldforever Oh yes! Men crying in films seems to be much more in fashion today than it was years ago. All to the good, if you ask me.

  • I love that Mr Rochester is so realistically written-"Where are my candles?!" Still a grumpy git, lol. I like that better than if he always knew the perfect romantic thing to say...also the bit where he hears Jane's voice and looks like he can't believe his luck is so gorgeously acted.

  • "Where are my candles?! You think because I'm blind I don't need them!" haha, poor guy hasn't changed a bit. :) Definitly my favourite scene of the whole movie! Thanks for sharing.

  • The Bit where they laugh about him being ugly, I always found that bit real funny. Anyways this scene is just lovely and sooo full of emotion. Thanks for the upload

  • 2:14 - 3:44 is so beautiful.

The disbelief that she's real, the tears, ugh so charming. How I wish that there were Mr.Rochesters in the real world <3.

  • "Am I hideous Jane?"

    "Very Sir. You always were."

"Well, haven't lost your wickedness where ever you've been."

    LOL

I've have never been so singularly in love with fictional characters as I am with these two. To me, their love is superior to any I love I have ever read about.

  • @strangeinfatuation1 He's just sooo sweet;)

  • @strangeinfatuation1 I agree. Mostly because she is not pretty and he is not handsome. (In the book at least, he isn't.) They don't have to be good-looking, because they love each other for other reasons. That's why I like this lovestory, above other lovestories I have read, or romantic films I have seen.

  • I absolutely love this version with Toby and Ruth... but I also have a soft spot for the Samantha/Ciaron version 1997 ... Equally good but I think Toby and Ruth steal the last part of my heart... Brilliant, simply brilliant :0)x

  • it's amazing what strong band there is between them. he instantly recognize jane even though he is blind, her touch, fingers voice and kiss <3

    it is so beautiful!

  • Beautiful, I knew that Jane was coming back to Mr. Rochester´s arms, they are just meant to be. It´s reminds me "Pride and Prejudice" story.

  • @16mal94 lol if Charlotte Bronte heard that she'll turn in her grave. I've read somewhere that Bronte hated Jane Austen's work with a passion. Although, I get what you mean, something so beautiful about love stories in both the books.

  • FANTASTIC!!!! This is definitely the best version, though there are others which are good too. I think Ruth and Toby understand the characters to a depth the others don't quite match. Some of the other Janes were good, but I didn't think most of the Rochesters really WERE Rochester. These two hit it bang on. Nearly brings tears to my eyes!

  • I LOVE this scene!! When I was reading the book, I was so touched by this scene. Jane and Rochester really deserve to be happy because they are really good people. Rochester can be rude and seems mean at times but he's actually a very kind person. As for Jane, she has a beautiful soul.

  • @BaVQL i cryyyyyyyyy while i was reading this... when she said something like she couldnt wait to kiss him... i was like dudeeeeeeeeeeeeee do it nowwww!!! ruuun grab him lol

  • i just love it

great !masterpiece adaptation of the novel

    sorry for my english

  • so so beautiful <33333

  • Thank you for this special clip!

How well it shows love within suffering....

I have watched the movie for the last month up to twice a night, now I do not see the actors any more but the real story of Edward and Jane!

    Thank you for posting

    R

  • its funny how he's called her a witch from the very moment they met... i'll be quite offended if i was jane..lol

sad and emotional story but a really nice ending!!

  • Gah! He's supposed to have his left arm off :( Oh well. I love the book. I still need to see this movie.

  • One of my favorite scene! Both of them are fantastics, so touching .... you can feel that the "love is in the air" :-)

  • A film of Jane Eyre is in the pipeline for 2011, cannot wait! This scene is sooo lovely in every way, thankz for the upload.

  • I have watched this scene at least a thousand times!!! It is sooo touching!!! Toby did a great JOB!! I WISH SOOO much that they would make a second jane eyre!!

  • "I dream of you often and in the morning you call. You always were a witch, you know."

Its absolutely lovely, his disbelief :)

  • It's a beautiful scene. Toby is amazing here, Dalton , yes, too.

  • One of my favourite episodes.

However the whole book is the one favourite episode of mine)) I've read the book thousand times and I watch this movie over and over again. The most wonderful thing in the world - i'm glad to know there are people who think so too.

  • me too, ive read it too many times! and i think ive also watched this too many times too. it and the book always cheer me up though! :)

  • really so!) it gives a feeling that the world is better than it seems amd makes a heart beat more quickly and one fells truly happy!))

  • definitly, have you read wuthering heights? thats a good one too...

  • I have. Very good one. The most gothic thing I've read. To tell the truth I'm not much acquainted with gothic literature, but some moments there were very chilling. And the atmosphere of the novel in the whole makes you to immense in the story totally.

  • Gees, i watch this part again and again, toby's done such an amazing job portraying the blind guy

  • Magnificent scenes, very well acted, with tendersess and passion,. Thank you.

  • Got the dvd when it came out. Toby is amazing!

  • Absolutely amazing! :-)

  • sorry : saddest part

  • yes..it is the saddest parts of the movie.. cant stop crying :(

  • I love this version. such great chemistry....

  • I second that! Toby Stephens is Amazing! = )

    xx

  • There is an ongoing debate everywhere, but hands down I think the 2006 version of Jane Eyre is the best EVER. If Toby Stephens is reading this...YOU are the best rochester ever!

  • heck YES!

  • has anyone else noticed that he looks kinda washed out at the beginning, and gets more tan as the movie goes on?

  • Yeah he was very good, but I still think all in all the Timothy Dalton one from the 80's had that edge... but still... really good!

  • This makes me cry... everytime. gosh I'm such a girl. <_<

  • Toby played a blind person incredibly well x

  • Yes, I'm crying ( i admit this xD)

  • Mr. Rochester never looked so good :)

  • the only i miss when Rochesters blind is his faces. his little smiles are too fast and hes just disoriented... :(

  • in what way is she ugly? she has lovely eyes and the character is meant to be plain visually.

  • Prachtige verfilming, heel overtuigend, ik kan er niet genoeg van krijgen! Ruth Wilson en Toby Stephens zijn echt Jane Eyre en Edward Rochester

  • Best Jane Eyre, in my opinion. I'd like to see the next version of Jane Eyre that can top this!

It makes the previous versions look like shit :D
