Popular music most probably reached it's peak in the 70's, I'm listening to everything from the 30's to 00's for years and this is what I'd not be afraid to claim
If you ever feel down, listen to Musical Massage and I Want You by Marvin Gaye (written and produced by Leon Ware). It might not take your troubles away but for a little while you'll at least be at peace. Music I truly can't live without.
I live for music like this. Truly awesome, this is true love, not Best I Ever Had. I do like that song too though :D but there's just no comparison when it comes to the meaning. R.I.P Minnie and props to Leon for the I Want You album
The Musical Massage lp is actually very good...and Minnie sings on a couple more songs on it also. And included on the cd is are the I Want You demo sessions that Leon recorded before handing the songs over to Marvin.
Also, check Minnie's Adventures In Paradise lp...Leon's got his hand in that one. Like one of my personal favs, Baby, This Love I Have.
No disrespect to Teena Marie 'cos I love me some Teena but vocally, Teena can't even begin to compare with Minnie Riperton. Granted Teena wrote, produced & arranged most of her material, but her voice is more suited to her own songs. The limits of her voice are apparent on 'Fire & Desire' with Rick James. Jojo of Mary Jane Girls' voice would've been more suited to Fire & Desire. That's my opinion anyway.
Keep on mind, Minnie was a big influence on Teena. She was Teena's favorite female vocalist. Teena has nothing but love & respect 4 Minnie...no comparison.
Great to come across some Leon Ware. He did an album in the mid-70's that was fantastic.I forgot the name but I believe it may have been either his first or second album. Leon, along with T-Boy Ross were the men behind the scenes for much of Marvin Gaye's 70's career.
Always LURVE Minnie's voice...and Leon...I forgot about him but yes...good stuff...this actually reminds me A LOT of Ashford and Simpson....Leon's voice can be mistaken for Nick Ashford's
Today it would have been her 60th Birthday (November 8, 1947 -- July 12, 1979). Deep respect for this voice, quality of singing and deep emotionality. - And hey, Minnie-Baby: You still enjoy us with your hot stoff. The young generation of "wanna become a star" still can take as an excelent example, what's world class R&B. - Keep you ever in mind & heart...
