See I think the reason they didn't sing live back in the 90s that much, as they now do, is because for one thing the technology was different then. Their music is very electronic, so the stage would have been full of the instruments - and they'd have to have much more people playing the instruments then. Four people couldn't have done ALL of that. Now computers can take most of the load with the automated sequencing in recording software. It was just easier to do playback.

I've seen when they've played fully live and the band was MUCH larger than that, also in an interview they said that it wasn't often their concerts were entirely live. It was because of the style of music and what it would entail to play live in that time frame. Now it's much easier than it was then because of the technology.
