  • I admire FN for the courage to sink money into the production of this little pistol, and the concept is intriguing, but I have some concerns. It is VERY pricey, the ammo is VERY pricey, and as personal defense piece I would be very concerned about over-penetration and collateral damage to bystanders. All that being said, that is one hip little gun!

  • Hey santa give me one of those

  • nice weapon but, good lord they are expensive!

  • i have read that fn designed this round to penetrate body armor for nato troops but they also make the weak version for civilian use

  • @rVLnFOURchannel You could certainly hand load the 5.7x28mm for "armor piercing" capabilities.

  • I love to watch all your videos and usually pay close attention to your reviews on youtube and your website. I have to be quite honest though. After reading much of your reviews on some excellent firearms i dont quite understand your opinion on the PMR-30 or even Kel-tec alone. The PMR-30 alone is known for key holing. The quality of materials usesd is lacking. If the secret service carried a pmr over a five seven the probably would be laughed at. kel-tec: great ideas horrible execution.

  • The problem with key-holing with the PMR-30 is an ammo problem, not a problem with the weapon. However, to accommodate the ammo that was giving the problems, Kel-Tec redesigned the barrel with different rifling. I have no problems at all with either on mine.

    Jeff

  • Love the stach bro!

  • good sir, this sounds like don ross! :D

  • do you prefer the five seven or the pmr 30 better. about the only difference i can see is price of ammo and weapon and the power. I have the pmr 30 and love it. was looking at either this or a 1911- 45.

  • I prefer the PMR-30.

    Jeff

  • @Gunblastdotcom The PMR30 is awesome, but ballistic-ally 22mag doesn't even compare. Brassfetcher web found "As tested, both 5.7x28mm cartridges offer lethality that is on par with or slightly greater than a .45ACP 230gr jacketed hollow-point."(federal 230hydrashock) This stuff even with the FMJ ammo leaves massive wound channels in ballistics gel. Due to its low diameter the FMJ ammo will always yaw, the hollow points and fragmenting loads are in a class of there own. But the PMR holds more.

  • The PMR 30 is also lighter in weight, and ammo is readily-available anywhere that sells ammo.

    Jeff

  • @Gunblastdotcom I'm with you on the ammo. I haven't seen any of that 5.7 stuff in stores only online. I'm really impressed with hornady's descision to introduce 22wmr to there critical-defense ammunition line. People certainly overlook RF ammo loaded with premium grade components for top quality firearms as a serious defense option. The hornady critical defense 45 grain 22 wmr compared quite well to a 380 acp slug in ballistics gel when fired out of a S&W 351 pd. And its sold in 50 round boxes.

  • @Gunblastdotcom I really like the pmr 30 though. I am a big fan of the 22 mag cartridge and for flat shooting pistols I used to love the AMT 30 carbine auto mag. But this new generation of cartridge like the hk4.6x30mm, the FN5.7x28mm, and the very rarely mentioned 4.38x30mm Libra are certainly in a class of they own.

  • They are indeed excellent cartridges, but not really comparable to a 22 magnum, in cost or power. The 22 mag in the PMR-30 is a great package, combining light weight, low recoil, and easy of use with a fistfull of cartridges in the magazine. Right now, it is in a class of its own, and I have been waiting for such a weapon for many years.

    Jeff

  • @manostihl fn 5.7 the round is has a fps that is 700 fps faster dude thats a big difference not even on the the same level your buying a corvette and trying to pass it of as a Lamborghini

  • It's a FNH made and NOT a FNH-usa made!

make the difference,it could save your life!

  • It is Belgium-made, but is imported by FNH-USA, and in the US, FNH-USA is the source.

    jeff

  • @Gunblastdotcom oh right thanks for the precision

  • Epic beard!!!!!!

  • can it handle with the standard abuse test like snow, being buried, water/mud and frozen?

  • Santa!

  • Oh, duh. Read the posts, you're Tennesseean. West, middle, or east? I'm in Atwood, in west Tn, about halfway between Memphrica and Nashville, around 30 minutes from Jackson. Thanks a ton for the videos, man- to the point and sans the bullshit.

  • Northern Middle Tennessee - Stewart county, just south of Fort Campbell, KY. We don't sell t-shirts or anything like that.

  • @homeostasis4me i'm from milan. less than 10 min. from you lol

  • @Tbone9722 Next time you drive thru Ratwood if you listen real close you might hear me shooting, lol. Sometimes it's like the wild west out here....my neighbors bring the kids inside when I bumpfire the AR, hahaha.

  • Jeff- are you in Tennessee? If so, howdy neighbor! Also- do you sell t-shirts? After all of the video reviews of yours I've watched, I'd love to pay you back by buying a few, man.

  • Well Jeff, you seem to have shot all the 22 pistols out there. For your money and your pleasure, which one gets your nod? Ruger , Buckmark, FN and whatever else you've shot. Fact, it'd be great if you ranked them like #1, #2, #3, etc. Of course, the #1 would be your favorite. Thanks Jeff - you make this gawking at You Tube quite interesting and fun! Bill

  • I could never choose just one. I am no good at making decisions, so i have many.

    Jeff

  • @Gunblastdotcom Do you have a gun store or work for one? Or did you find gold in the back fields of Tennessee or something. Maybe someday I'll have fewer hands in my pockets and will be able to afford more than a few guns, here and there. Right now, by the time everyone has taken their share, all I get is empty pockets. Or at least, it feels that way. Thanks for your thoughts and great video reviews!

  • I do not sell guns, or anything gun related. To do so would be a conflict.

    Jeff

  • This might be my first non solid number (9mm, .45ACP) caliber pistol.

  • love your reviews man, short and sweet.., no bullshit., what state you in, and are you a ffl holder., jus curious thx.,keep em coming

  • I'm in Tennessee. I used to have an FFL, but I sent it back to them the day after Clinton was elected. I'd just lost faith in humanity. Now I wouldn't mind having him back!

  • @Gunblastdotcom best reply ive seen in a long time, hahah, u ever get your faith back.., cause i haven't, at least as far as the gubernment is concerned...

  • Not even close.

  • @Gunblastdotcom be careful what ya wish for u know Hilary is gonna go for it

  • Good review

  • yay! lefty shooter!

  • Keep on keeping on brother

  • This guy hardly ever flinches when he fires. Every single time I shoot and try not to flinch I'm gonna try to emulate Gunblastdotcom and his uncanny trigger control.

  • Just keep shooting!

  • at first the beard scared me then the gun, marvilous

  • Nothing to be scared of, it's just hair. I'm as gentle as a lamb.

  • @Gunblastdotcom but what did the lamb say when you skinned it and wore it on your face? lol

  • Dead lambs tell no tales!

  • @Gunblastdotcom seriously though i wish i could grow a beard that awsome, or have a gun, im not picky which

  • Keep trying, Grasshopper. You can have both!

  • @Gunblastdotcom A lamb. With a gun. Those wolves had better think twice!

Good review and great controllability there.

  • Just got mine its a great gun but I had difficulties double tapping.

  • epic beard is epic nuf said

  • but how far can it shoot?

  • About two miles, maybe more, depending upon the load.

    Jeff

  • well sir, I love your post it is straight and to the point but, still has the info I need. i wish others were like you. keep up the good work.

  • Thanks!

  • so little recoil, awesome gun

  • nice beard

  • you have the best beard on the planet. you use the wrong hand to shoot with, though ;p

  • Would you fire a round into a block of clay to show the damage this round can do to get an idea of it's effectiveness.

  • Low recoil, space age looks, ambidextrous! I'm in love (with the gun) lol; I don't understand why it's a "grand" though, anyone wanna tell me?

  • @Shonziquav its the only one on the market.

  • Beautiful Pistol..little high in price, just like anything FN, but you get what you pay for..top notch..

  • I want to see a side-by-side range showdown, 5.7 vs. KT.

  • You won't see it from me.

    I don't do comparisons.

    Jeff

  • Hey Jeff great review as always!!! Would you us this weapon as home defend or prefer another caliber like 9mm, .45 hollow point?

Hey want you to know i buy the kahr pm45 because of your great review thanks and keep up the good work!!!!

  • The Five-SeveN is a good choice, unless over-penetration is a concern.

    Jeff

  • What's that song you're using?

  • It's called "Funky Joe Boogie", written and played by Shannon Hayes, who is a close friend of my brother Boge. Shannon is a great guy and a great player.

  • how many guns do you have total?

  • I do not disclose that information.

    Jeff

  • MOM GET THE PHONE!!

  • The ladies will just NOT leave me alone!

  • you are my favorite gun reviewer on youtube! short and sweet right to the point..dont go on for hrs like some reviewers on here.

  • I don't like to hear myself talk that much, so I don't figure anyone else would either. I'd rather folks go to Gunblast and read the full articles, they are free to everyone.

  • I love Fabrique National, they aim for quality and cosmetic... now if only they could perfect the F2000 to be more formidable against other ARs. FN in my opinion has the greatest concepts because they could literally build an outfitting for a military force, they make their own pistols, ARs, and SMGs... all they're missing is some shotguns and LMGs... they could build their own government if they had the man power for it, pretty amazing company in my opinion.

  • @FatalFist Actually they do make a shotgun, the SLP: Self Loading Police and they make a slew of machineguns: the MK249, 240, 46, 48 and the LRWS to name some.

  • i noticed that every empty shell except the last ejected forward, thought that was kind of odd

  • @ReconStormX I noticed that as well. I would assume it is related to the fact it is the last shell, and the reloading mechanism does not move forward as with the rest of the shells. (just a thought. I don't actually know. I'm not too experienced lol)

  • Do you think that with that cartridge, one would have to worry about over penetration? I'm just wondering if this pistol would be nice for a safe, home defense pistol that any family member can use in an emergency.

  • I heard a rumor where the this gun is plastic external though, is that true?

  • The frame is plastic.

    Jeff

  • Jeff do you like this firearm?

  • Yes. Very good concept.

    Jeff

  • @Gunblastdotcom it is a good handgun very accurate i like the 5.7 caliber

  • How bout a Contender barrel in this round fo vamints

  • HAHA a true redneck, beard and all. good gun and a good review

  • can you Shoot the S&W 638 and tell us what you think of it ?

  • It is an excellent weapon.

    Jeff

  • I would like this in 22Mag just for the ammo cost.

    5.7x28@$.40x20rds=$8.00

    22Mag@$.14x20rds=$3.00

    Nice review.Thanks.

  • nice gun and great review, im really considering this gun or a baby desert eagle.... thanks for the info

  • phone . . .

  • He is AWESOME

  • I want this guy by my side when the zombies try to take over the planet

  • I never seen any balistic's on the 5.7 I thought it was much faster then a 22mag? Well only good thing about the round is you can reload it. other then that and the cost of brass I dont see one in the future.

  • interesting if they made one in .22 hornet

  • Yeah that Kel-tec is defenitly on the list.

  • Thanks for the video and all the work you do. I have really enjoyed your reviews. And anyone doubting this cartridge can just look up the ballistics videos right here on Youtube. There is a great group of vids a guy made shooting soaked phone books. Numbers aren't everything, the proof is in the actual testing. So do some research before you start badmouthing a remarkable firearm. It is always the guys that don't own one that have the negative remarks. Shoot one, then talk. Thanks GUNBLAST!

  • seriously????

  • Im kinda skeptical of the 5.7 as a defensive round...

But honestly, I would love to see it chambered in a pistol styled similar to a Ruger Mark III

  • After you buy that, perhaps I can sell you the Mackinac Bridge, too. If you're going to shoot a pistol, then choose wisely. If you can't stand recoil, okay- choose a proven sub-caliber piece and take plenty of target practice.

  • I've got time with this pistol and I really like it, even if it's basically like .22WMR. There is almost no recoil at all, its stunningly accurate, lightweight and easy to handle. I'd buy one if the ammo was cheaper and easier to find.

But the small cartridge thing has been done before and argueably better (many people myself included go nuts over a Tokarev) I think this pistol deserve's its place.

  • Even if the WMR and the 5.7 ballistics are the same. There aren't any new/reliable designs in semi auto pistol chambered for WMR.

How is the trigger pull on you 5.7, Is is similar to a revolver (heavy and long) or is it more like a Glock?

Have you done any hunting with it?

Thanks bro, ps I wasn't arguing with you above just agreeing and stating there are no good WMR options anyway.

  • Kel-Tec has a new WMR pistol, the PMR-30, coming out pretty soon. The working prototypes do seem to be pretty reliable, it's fairly lightweight and compact, and looks to be a comfortable shooter. Certainly something to look forward to. And yes, the "30" in the name does refer to the standard magazine capacity, so there's something else to look forward to.

  • What kind of $ is kel-tec asking for it?

My opinion the FN 5.7 is WAY over priced anyway-Completely plastic!

I have always said a good 22WMR pistol would be a must for the gun collection.

  • MSRP is somewhere a little above $400, so it's a nice alternative over a Ruger or .22lr pistol. Looking at the pictures, it seems to be a plastic frame, but a metal slide, all metal up top, though a nice lightweight design. They say it works through both locked breech and blowback, and it can cycle different types of ammunition reliably.

And then, you know, for a nice plinker, the ammo's going to be easily available for less than a quarter of the price of 5.7, too, so it's a win-win.

  • The only problem with 22 WMR is the ballistics I have come across have been out of a rifle. I have not found any numbers from a pistol.

My understanding (and I am not a reloader) is that the 22WMR design constitues a slower burning powder. This will inturn, seriously effect ballistics out of a shorter barrel.

GOOGLE 'd the kel-tec, nice pistol.

  • We'll probably soon hear what works good and what doesn't, perhaps someone will make a faster-burning WMR load for the handguns. My buddy has an Automag II, and it has a nice little thump to it, has noticeably more power downrange than his 10/22.

  • @AreThereNoMoreNames Hell yeah, just went to Kel-Tec's site this afternoon and saw that, can't wait!

  • Thats a good point actually, I have not seen that guns in .22WMR period. From what I remember the pull was short, smooth and even. Lighter than Glock for sure

  • Been wanting one of those for years, can't wait till I have one. I'm in the People's Republic of Kalifornia though, so I will only be able to legally have 10-round magazines... which takes away from one of the best points of that weapon.

  • move to a true state. leave the communists behind

  • @huskytwenty i own one of these, 2300 fps... it will penetrate vest and cavalar helmets...

your question, one shot will go threw a mans chest and into the next guy...

the hollow points will prevent this...

  • uhh... you mean Kevlar, don't you? A vest made of cavalar would not work! LOL...

  • @marcdrumz

5.7x28 will penetrate a bullet proof vest and a kevlar helmet with no problem at 300 yards... maybe i spell things wrong...

fn fiveseven has half the recoil of a glock 17...

    (you could wiki this stuff)

your avrage 9 mm will traval at about 1100 feet per second...

the 5.7x28 travels about 2300 fps...

    .223 travels about 3000 fps...

  • sorry, bro- i wasnt fkng with you...

I liked your video very much - You certainly know your stuff with FPS, etc... the 5.7 is deff a unique piece. I've had mine for three years now, and have absolutely NO problems with it. Keep on shootin', brother!

  • @marcdrumz i want to see how many car doors this hand gun can shoot threw...

maybe 2 doors? lol i need to test this...

  • hahah- my guess is alot more than two! We used to try my .357 thru doors, when my buddy owned a scrap yard- with 125 grain jhp, it went through four doors!! That 5.7 , i'll bet, could pass through at least twice that....LOL!!

Lemme know what you find out!!

  • nice gun

  • Been an owner and huge fan of the FiveseveN since before it came out. Can't tell you how many gun stores I walked into and not a sole gave a crap or knew anything about it..... now all the "old guard"is finally getting on board with it, bout dang time.

  • We're too sensitive to pull a Russia. I think they should bury the guy wrapped in a pig carcass. It drives those religious nutjobs crazy.

  • All headshots with this bad buoy.

  • i hope they hang him for that and bury him in pig guts and all of his virgins were gay guys

  • They ought to transfuse him with a bit of pig blood, then tell him about it later.

  • LOLOLOLOLOLOL...!!!

  • The Terrorist at fort hood also had a 357 mag in addition to the 5.7The officer was shot 2 or 3 times and never was critically injured so the jury is still out on the 5.7 power. I own 2 and love the gun but I would take my python to the party if I had to choose

  • this is the fort hood shooters gun

  • No, he didn't use this one. And it was NOT the gun's fault.

  • I meant it was the model of that gun,,no it was not the guns fault ,,IT WAS POLITICAL CORRECTNESS,,,There were many signs he was a terrorist but they let him slide because he was a minority,,,leftist are causing the death of us,,they will take our guns and enslave us all,,well they wont take mine ,,lol

  • You are correct, sir. They will blame the weapon, not the shooter ot his Jihadist agenda.

  • @Gunblastdotcom AMEN!

  • hi. what do you think about responsible minorities carrying these kinds of weapons?

  • I don't think it should matter if you're a minority, if you're an american citizen you have the right to protect yourself with lethal force, should your life be in danger.

Any difference in ANYTHING based on race, is... well racism, even something positive such as affirmative action.

  • that's the response i was hoping for :) glad you aren't a bigot, like some americans

  • @zeno57- SHUT THE FUCK UP with ur leftist crap. He was just an islamic terrorist, no different from ben laden himself. Everyone knows of ben laden's views & ideologies & the shooter clearly shares' em.

The shooter's been acting weird for years dated way back during the invasion of IRAQ. The so called leftist weren't in charge then. Pute de con, espece d'imbecile. I own guns, i'm no left nor right NUT. You're just spitting shit on here just to fit in LOSER.

En passant , R.I.P to the Brave Deads

  • I wont shut up ! you leftist communist ,freedom stealing punks are causing the death of Americns with ur gun free zones

  • @zeno57 hey dude common lets just relax for a second. regardless of how irrational guys on the other side of the table seem we all are americans we shouldn't fear each other. and i don't think they "let him slide" plenty of security breaches have occurred under both conservative and liberal administrations. irrational finger pointing gets us no where but a mature and level-headed conversation is what paves the way for a rational society. being american means being willing to consider all sides.

  • @zeno57 They ca have my guns........but they will get the ammo first!

  • Goodbye five seven, it's been real. :-(

  • it's not going anywhere. Hell it was just approved in CA recently. Don't believe the hype ;)

  • YAY! (I'm Californian)

  • ;)

Keep fighting the good fight, friend :)

The rest of the nation relies on California's dedicated shooters and activists to tamp down these out-of-control politicians; as California is closely watched to see what they can get away with.

I came to AZ from Illinois, and I thought IL was bad. You WILL get your rights fully restored in California if you keep fighting.

The majority of citizens know what's right. We will help our CA brothers anytime!

  • Thanks for the encouragement sonick. Let's hope and pray that the shooter gets what's due him and not a piece of plastic from FN

  • bad ass santa

  • The owners manual is a bit deceiving. It shows an illustration using the cleaning rod from the front of the barrel, yet recommends one cleans the bore from the rear to avoid scratching. I recommend using a pistol bore snake to clean the barrel to eliminate all chances of scratching

  • great job!!!

  • and it can go thru soft body armor

  • who plays that intro song?

  • pay better attention and you wouldn't have to ask. i bet you still don't understand that last statement

  • Someone should make a compact using the 5.7 round.

  • FN said a compact can't be done because of the pressures associated w/ the 5.7x28mm round.

  • Just like they said a black man wont become president.

  • Does this gun use 22 cartridge? or it's own special cartridge??? I would like to get it, but the ammo is hard to get or expansive, then I will pass. Please adv. Thanks!

  • It uses FN's 5.7x28mm cartridge, NOT the .22 Long Rifle or .22 Magnum.

  • thank you! are they easy to get?

  • Yes - check out the article for some links.

  • it all depends where you live, if you have a bass pro shop near you they usually have it, or a gun store that has p90's because its the same ammo, the gun is in the $1000 dollar range depending where you live it might be higer or lower, Ive seen it online as low as $800 but was always told never buy guns online so I purchased mine from a local range owner who had a extra one the ammo cost about $25 to $30 for 50 rounds, usually 40 gr. hollow points awesome gun for price n EXTREMELY light weight!

  • Comment removed

  • If you are conserned about price, then you should know this pistol is a bit on the expecive side. It is not outragious, but it is still high. The ammo though is rather exepcive, and it does use its own ammo. The only firearms to day that use the 5.7x28mm ss180 and ss190 ammo is the P90 sub-machine gun, the FN five seven, and a rifle you can buy a kit to build called the AR five seven.

  • is this more powerful then 9mm???

  • hmmm, just google the ballistic info on it :)

  • It's a smaller, lighter, faster bullet. It's ballistically no better than a .22 WMR.

  • another ill-informed expert on idiocy.....

  • Well, lets see. A .22 WMR with a 40 grain bullet can push it 1,910 fps, for 329 ft/lbs. The 5.7 can push that same bullet to 1,950, for a 339 ft/lbs. They use the same bullet diameter, and while the WMR isn't reloadable, the thin necks of the 5.7 make them nearly impossible to reload, as well.

So the difference? There's an FN pistol and bullpup SMG for the 5.7 and they look awesome. On the horizon, though, is a Kel-Tec for the WMR, with a 30 round flush magazine.

  • Well, lets see.....captainvirgilHilts ballistics videos comparing your WMR and two 5.7 cartridges through wet phone books. Watch it. I think you might feel differently. Numbers aren't everything. Look at the expansion and penetration of the 5.7 compared to your WMR. Not trying to be a jerk, just think you would find it interesting.

  • He's comparing a ballistic tip to a FMJ, with predictable results. As far as the cartridges are concerned, they're nearly identical. A bullet isn't going to behave differently at the same speed because of the the case it was fired from.

If you want to see more of what I mean, Oleg Volk has some pictures on LJ of the same thing, using similar bullets in ballistic gelatin. The 40 grain .22 WMR JHP penetrated farther, but had nearly the same wound cavity as the SS197.

  • I will check it out, thanks.

  • There is some reliability problems with the WMR, because it is rimfire and the higher barrel pressures needed to make it a semi auto. Gun has to be "built up" (additional weight) to handle the additional pressure.

I have only found 2 companies that make WMR in semi auto pistols and from what I gathered, both pistol had mediocore reliability and rather heavy.

The Grendal 22 WMR could use some updating and probably be a cheaper contender with the 5.7

  • I agree with the ballistics between the 5.7 and WMR - they are identical.

However FN has the upper hand with a new, reliable design.

However, I am a Gun Whore, I want all of them!

  • I don't see the point of this gun. Honestly, (while it doesn't offend me), the only thing I think it's good for in a pistol module is penetrating bullet proof armor. It should have minimal 1 shot stopping power.

  • Because bad guys have access to body armor too: North Hollywood shootout.

  • the rounds he has are hollow points and it is a high velocity round and the armor penetrating rounds are illegal for civilian use its only for law enforcement and military you can obtain them illegaly which is a dumb idea because you will be in serious shit if caught with them, a few law enforcement agencies are using this gun, I own one and I must say I am impressed although its a bit big but after all its a full size pistol

  • Thats A nice pistol how much do they cost?
