  • What can I say? That poor dog what a shame for him/her. I've done a lot in animal welfare voluntary for a good few years including work I've done for RSPCA, taken on a lot of rewarding tasks, been a pet sitter but I've never had to deal with a cat, dog or other animal with this condition. I would take on the chalenge of dealing with this as it would be very rewarding at the same time though I'd not want the animal to suffer. Cheers & I hope he/she will get better. Is this a poodle?

  • @bestrickie2 Thanks, yes, a standard poodle. He eventually succumbed to the epilepsy and is hopefully having an easier time of it wherever he is now. Keep up the good work for our animal friends, they need all the help they can get!

  • poor dog :(

  • I'm real sorry about your dog I looked up this video because were fostering a 14 year old dog and my mom told me he might have a seizure

  • I'm sorry about your dog.My dog has epilepcy. Can they die during a seizure when they are old?

  • @thethe1eyeddog A few dogs will die during a seizure whether they are young or old. It is a risk but it's not common. Most dogs with epilepsy do not die from it.

  • Thank you. That is EXACTLY what my Boston Terriers seizures look like. She has been diagnosed with low thyroid and is now on phenobarbital due to 8 seizures in 24 hrs. I was looking for some human comfort for myself having to watch her go through this. It's so hard to watch.

  • @TheOriginalJena has the pheno helped her at all? how is she now?

  • I am so sad to see this. I stumbled upon this by chance. My 8 month old labbie has experienced three seizures and I had no idea what was going on with her. Hers only lasted about a minute, not long enough for me to think of video or picture taking. She is on medication to prevent her from having any further seizures. I am so sorry to hear your puppy passed. I share your sorrow.

  • my dog has fits to not very ofton though

  • My dog just had her first seizure yesterday, she's a 2 yr old Snorkie and it was extremely violent. It was very similar to this one. She's still out of it and it's been 17 hours now. We took her to the vet and he gave her Valium and Phenobarbitol . The seizure it's self stopped but she can't stand or hold her head up, is whimpering a lot. Going to the vet in an hr to do check ups again.

  • hes not having a seizure.... he is dreaming... many dogs behave like that when they r dreaming

  • @Gizzmoiz uh, ok, glad to know he was killed by a bad dream

  • @Epilepticus2001 You're in idiot!!! Anyone can see this is a seizure. My Border Collie died of having over 40 "bad dreams" within a 24 hours period...

  • @afsovet Welcome to the club

  • @Gizzmoiz really, pay attention to ALL That is going on. yes, dogs run and their limbs and lips twitch when they dream... but not the whole body at once. Note the drool at the end and how he is confused upon waking up.

Realize that YOUR comments affect those who witnessed this in person, and how blunt and unemotional it was.

  • @Gizzmoiz - This IS a seizure , they are very violent and the dog loses control. It's not a pretty sight and is very scary not only for the pet but the owner to experience it.

  • @Gizzmoiz Do NOT pretend to know what you're talking about. It would be beneficial for you to take a few lessons in tact and judgment. You have made yourself sound like a complete idiot. A wise man once said "Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

This was a full on canine seizure. It is true that sometimes a dog will twitch while dreaming. Learn to tell the difference.

  • Poor little fella. Looking at this makes me realise how closely we are related to animals, and that we are charged with being responsible for, and respectful towards them as well.

  • i know this is sad but he sounded like a horse im sorry for your loss

  • bbut he dog out of its F***ing misery i cried dude tht is sad

  • Oh man, thats so sad, that poor doggy. Does it happen often??

  • @slav801 It used to happen every few days. He didn't make it through the last one, a couple years ago. Gone but not forgotten.

  • I just want to say thank you for posting that so many people dont understand. I have people who have told me to have him put down, its so rediculous and it upsets me, if it was a person it would be different. he is fine ALL the time, its only us owners that feel the stress, apart from them obvioulsy bein worn out. thank you, im so sorry to everyone whos dog has passed on and i respect your strength in lovin them through the hard times, some people dont have the strength of mind, sorry 4 them xx

  • deximos: this is very sick. The dog should be put to sleep. It should be euthanized. Don't leave it suffering like that. My dog has seizures like this, he is 100% fine every single day and then occasionally has fits like this and sometimes worse, 1st thank you so so much for adding this clip so people understand, 2nd to deximos, you sound like 1 or 2 uneducated people i work with, you would never say that about a person.. the dog has epilepsy... look it up and learn, your an idiot, same on u

  • ya my dog has seizure close to what he does and she's takeing some meds for it. the meds she takes doesn't completely get rid of her seizures but they make them less violant and easier for her to handle. i'm really glad they have meds for this kind of stuff i don't know what i would do with out my baby.

  • poor little thing. my dog keeps gettin a bad middle ear and just before i found out she strated to have fit one vet told me it was her ears then another told me it was epilepsy so she has been put on meds for that how do you positively know it is epilepsy she has

  • I posted a video of my 8 yr old Italian Greyhound having a seizure like this. Same biting at the end. Mine was on Phenobarbitol bt now Potassium Bromide but it isn't helping. He still has one about every 2 or 3 days. It's been 9 months!

Thanks for posting the video. People need to see and have somewhere to go who are having the same problems. It's very scary when it first starts happening.

  • hi my dog just had a health attack like that but we manage to save him by moving him and pressing his lungs we getting some medicines right away.

  • I had a dog that had seizures like that. The vet said he was epileptic so we gave him the meds he needed. He had to be put down because something went horribly wrong. We took him in just a week before he died because he had stepped on something and was limping, they gave him some steroids and his injections and he was fine for a few days. We took him back in because he was lethargic- he had a seizure. Two days after that, my four year old Bear was dead. I feel like it's my fault, I feel stupid.

  • ok I don't think its right to post videos like this but I understand that it happens and do think it could help someone out who have unanswered questions.. Poor guy hope things work out for him..

  • its sad. my dog had one yesterday. it was very scary.thankfully shes ok i hope your dog is ok to

  • O that poor little sweet one!I hope your dog has got some medicine for it?

  • @Hans021220 Yes, he was a sweet one. He was one of the few who couldn't be helped with medicine but we tried.

  • @Epilepticus2001 I am so sorry for your loss!

  • my dog did the same thing this moring and she was fooming at the mouth and peed a little then got up and was fine but very energenic, then she did it agian a few hours latter

  • Thanks for sharing your video for educational purpose. My 11.5 year old standard poodle just started having seizures. Hers are different, she just siffens up and cocks her head to the right and it last no more than 2 minutes and then she is fine. She just had a blood test done and it came back normal. Waiting to talk to the vet about next steps.

  • @dodamore Hi, your dog is pretty old to develop epilepsy, so i'm thinking there may be some other underlying cause of her seizures. Hopefully it will all work out ok.

  • @dodamore my dog has the same thing and they've been more frequent lately... what did your vet have to say about it?

  • shit! this is what my cat does! but my cat cant bend its limbs, they just go stiff! ;[!

  • this is very sick. The dog should be put to sleep. It should be euthanized. Don't leave it suffering like that.

  • @deximos I guess you think humans with epilepsy should be put to sleep too?

  • @Epilepticus2001 Well said.

  • @Epilepticus2001 Right on - I know of animals who have had epilepsy & who have led long & happy lives, in spite of this.

  • Usually a seizure lasts a couple minutes...the dog is usually fine the othe 23 hrs. and 57 minutes. The dog has no awareness of what's happening and are fairly normal and running around like nothing happened in minutes. Your idea is a little extreme.

  • Poor little guy. My dog has seizures too and they are tough to sit back and wait through them. You just want them to stop and the dog to come out of it quickly.

  • This stuff is so sad. My dog had her first seizure today and we rushed her to the vet. They say it's either lead poisoning (because the neighborhood I live in has a lot of old houses with lead based paint and foundation) or it could be Epilepsy. I hope it's just a once in a lifetime thing, but if it isn't I'm going to do everything I can to help her.

  • sad :(

  • I'm so sorry.Seizures are a nightmare...My JRT started having them at 11 months..started meds..she only made it another year before she had a status cluster seizure that could not be stopped.I will miss my Reesie forever. This video is sad, but can help a lot of people.

  • @suzid777 Thank you, and i'm sorry about your girl too.

  • @suzid777 It's heartbreaking when you lose a beloved pet. Best wishes.

  • thats pretty much what my dog did, but foam was coming out of her mouth, she had like 10 seizures in one night, and she didn't know who we were after the seizure, and she fell down the stairs once. They we had to put her down :'( When your dog has a seizure it sucks

  • A friend of mine had a rescue dog with epilepsy. her piece of sh*t owner threw her out of a moving vehicle

  • @rydag11 Yes, there are a few too many psychos in the world. Maybe god will cause him to drive off the road and then get thrown through the windshield of his car, severing his jugular vein as he flies through the jagged glass. That would be too bad.

  • my beagle mix has seizures occasionally...he always lets me know he's going into seizure...the chances of death are rare... he is on meds and it controls them

  • Last night my dog daisy had one like this.the best thing to do is to put a rubber sandal and hold her down and don't panic stay calm. She got a strong one last night and two short ones today but hopefully with the medication we got her she will get better

  • my dog had something like this..

i had a panic and dont know what to do.. :(

  • I was in a jolly mood myself but now suddenly I am feeling completely helpless and useless. I wish I had not clicked on this. My Lab also sometimes shivers & groans in REM while in deep sleep but not as vigorously as this. I guess this dog wasn't sleeping in this video but just had a fit. So what treatment did Jackson go through and what were the results? I really hope he is ok now. Pls have my best wishes.

  • this is so sad. I wish I hadn't watched it.

  • I know what you mean. It's not exactly the way i want to remember him.

  • @ScientiaVeritasEtLux

Strangely, I did not feel anything when I watched this. I guess I'll be a surgeon when I grow up =D

  • Good idea. Or if you're a little less motivated, i hear they have some openings for serial killers.

  • Aww poor Jackson! such an adorable dog.

  • i have the same prob with my dog..it just started today..he had like 4 seizures..its so sad to see your pet undergo this problem..:(

  • mine to today

  • Oh... poor baby :(

  • @scar

Please take him to the vets straight away, its hard to tell through the Internet. Only a vet can tell you whats causing it.

If you can film him during the seizures, do it!!!! Its very important to show it to the vet.

  • just today my dog started having seizures about 3-5 of them can anyone tell me what to do with him

  • Poor dog. My pup just got done having a seizure...so i thought i'd look up more information on them and what to do, because i had no clue, so instead i was crying and freaking out. I wish he didn't have to go through that,

  • try Keppra. You will be amazed. It is a new medication for canines and is used on adults. He gets 250 ml 3 x a day. And has not had a seizure since. Speak to your vet.

  • I did try Keppra....750mg x 3....it didn't work at all for him. It does work for some dogs though, and is a good thing to try if phenobarbital and potassium bromide don't do the job. Glad it's working for your dog.

  • my dog who is a mini poodle gets all 3 medications and so far so good. His seizures are as bad as your dog. It broke my heart and I would do anything to make it better. I'm sure you feel the same.

  • I did feel the same and i tried a zillion different methods from drugs to diet to holistic etc but nothing ever controlled his seizures. He was one of the few dogs with epilepsy who couldn't be helped and he died from it last year. We miss him.

  • how does epilepsy usually end up killing an animal? i'm just curious because my neighbor has a cat with some kind of nerve problem and twitches.. not sure if its seizures tho since i've never really seen it myself, anyway i'm sorry for ur loss, i used to have a dog but he got cancer and i miss him too.

  • it dont kill them you have to have them put down cause they dont come out of it.... they say there is a 4% chance they can die but usually they have to be uthinized.

  • That is absolutely not true! They rarely die from this. It can happen but it is rare.

  • that is a really horrible seizure

  • its soooo horrible....i know

my dog has these every week and wets and sometimes soils himself in the process. its a big job to get up in the middle of the night to deal with it...but its all you can do if you love your dog.

  • my dog used to have these kinds of seizures. Now he is on keppra a new medication (plus phenobarb and pottasium bromide) and hasn't had a seizure in 45 days. Try the Keppra. I give him 250 ml 2x a day.

  • Awe this makes me so sad. My dog Nikki had mild seizures and eventually they started to get worse and worse, even after having him on medicine and stuff. Eventually he had a really long one and passed away from it...Broke my heart.

  • ok one question

how do u take care of the sezures i mean like if he has them do u take him to the vet asap

  • There's really nothing a vet can do unless it's an emergency situation where the seizures do not stop by themselves within a few minutes. In that case they need a vet FAST. But basically you have to learn how to take care of most seizures at home or you'll go bankrupt running to the vet every time.

  • what i usually do is pet them and make them feel comfortable and stay with them until it goes away but if its reall serious like REALLY then go to the vet

trust me i hav 2 dogs with this disease

  • really interesting video, thanks for sharing for those who want to become more educated.

  • my dog is a golden retriever and has the same exact ones.. in the past week hes been having 2 a day today he had 3 =[ we took him to the vet again and they gave us stronger medicine & he has to get a tumor removed on tuesday.. hope your dogs better.. and anyone who reads this or watches its not funny it really scares the crap out of you.

  • Gah...watching anything having a seizure is scary.

  • u fool u should of helped your dog. the dog could of died if it got hurt on any objects

  • Yeah, well, we can't all be rocket scientists.

  • actually no . my dog had one last night for the first time . and we tryed everything but he wouldnt wake up ! so if your going to be rude . make sure its about something thats possible .

  • Benzer3: Your such a idiot, She/he could not do anything about it. What is she/he supposed to do? Pick it up,Start giving it water and food? Uh NO you HAVE to leave them be there not going to be the ones injured by the objects. Your going to injure it and yourself if you help.

  • my golden retriever just had a seizure about 15 minutes ago.. and i was home alone. scariest thing of my life.. he used to have them maybe 1 every 2 weeks. so we took him to the vet and he got medicine and he hasnt had one for 6 months.. and he just had one.. and he got up and didnt konw who i was at first.. but now he does.. it was the scariest thing-\

  • you dumbys why wouldnt u help the poor dog u r soooooooo stupid to do that just video tape it o no the is is not helping the animal kingdom

  • I know it's hard to watch but i don't know what you think should have been done differently to help him during that seizure. The fact is that the only thing anyone could do to help in that situation was to make sure he didn't injure himself, and i did that.

The video helped his doctor see what his seizures were like, and it helps some people understand the illness a little better. It's not a pretty picture but that's the reality of epilepsy.

  • Hell I wish I could have video taped the ones my dog had today instead of freaking out

  • I hope he's not conscious when it happens.

  • @irreversible1988 I can confirm that the pup knows nothing, its hards on the people who look after him but the dog is 100% ok, very sleepy as its like runninga small marathon apparently :)

  • THAT IS A SCARY SEIZURE. I'm very sorry about your dog. may god bless his soul forever in a place where everybody, and everything is healthy, wealthy, and wise

  • I understand you so well! My westy use to do this. We almost lost her. We whent to go see the doctor and shes on medecine rigth now.

  • Many hugs to you and condolences for your loss, Epilepticus. Jackson is probably in dog heaven playing along with our Smokey :-) As I have said previously, he was a royal standard poodle.

  • May I know what kind of seizure is this? My dog has them too, but we've not been to the vet yet. Is this a grand mal seizure?

  • Yes, it's a grand mal seizure.

  • that is a huge seizure

  • My dog jut had a seizue, but it's not his worst, wa his irst in 4-5 years I hope he's okay.

  • Thanks for posting this. Im trying to figure out (with my vet) if my dog has late-onset epilepsy, and it helps to see this.

  • You're welcome. I'm glad it is helpful.

  • hey um, did the dog pass?

  • Yes, he's chewing on the great big dog biscuit in the sky as we speak. So we miss him like crazy but we're happy he's living the good life now and we're looking forward to seeing him again someday.

  • so is my dog and i am sorry.

  • my dog had a seizure yesterday, trying to find out more about it.

  • oh my god! poor doggie. when they have a seizures will they bite you if you try to touch them?

  • A seizing dog won't try to bite you, but he might bite you by accident if you get your hand near his mouth in the middle of a seizure. It's easy to avoid doing that. Sort of like it's easy to avoid getting run over by a car when crossing the street.

  • well what do you do while our dog is having one? i am really, like nervous so i would call 911 and they will think im crazy!

  • You deal with it the right way by reading and learning about the illness, or else like most people you shouldn't get a dog in the first place because you are unable to properly care for it.

  • My dog has had them since he was a puppy. I get down next to him and hold him and talk to him. It helps. He does the "paddling," like this dog, which has gotten less severe over the years. His head shakes and his eyes are bugged out. The seizures themselves have mellowed over the years. He's almost 7 now. When they are over he has to go out. Then 10 to 15 minutes later it is like nothing ever happened. He's never bitten me.

  • Why do they go out? My dog has never had to go out after a seizure.

  • poor dog...i had a little beagle that had seizures... the vet said beagles are prone to having them. we never put her on meds because they weren't that often or that severe, she lived to be pretty old.

  • This is good information, and yes the medicine will help if used properly. My dog Archie started to have repeated episodes. (after only having siezure many months apart), we took him in because he would not stop having them, about 20-30 minute apart all night long. After some tests we got the medicine and he was back to his old bubble chasing self again. Even thought it is shocking to see, the dog can be saved easily. Archie had been thru much worse when he was hit by a car as a young dog.

  • Poor thing! So sorry....my dog just started having these 2 weeks ago,I thought he was dying on the 1st one,so scary. Then he had 2 more later that night,he is now on phenobarbitol & getting his 2 week blood test check up tomorrow, then every 6 months hereafter. So far so good,he hasn't had one since he got on it,but my hubby & I are so terrified for the next one to happen.Don't want him to be alone either if it happens, want to be here to comfort him afterwards.I hate these, they suck!!

  • Don't worry. They are tough. If you are with the dog, just get down on the flor next to it and hold it. Talk to it too. That helps. That is the best advice I read when mine started having them. They last about 5 minutes, but have been less severe over time. He has NEVER been on meds. The first few scared the crap out of me. Now they are just part of his life and mone too. He has to go out after. Then not long after he is right as rain.

  • this was incredibly scary and frightening because who know what could happen the next time it has a moment of seizure

  • I have a 6 year old border collie named Dolly that had one of these for the first time today. I took her to the vet and she told me to wait it out, the only medication she could give would slowly kill her due to its affects on the liver. It wasnt as violent as this, is there anything I can do besides put her on toxic medicine?

  • You might want to find a new vet! She's talking about phenobarbital, and yes, it can damage the liver but it usually doesn't, and even if it does you usually have time to reverse the process. There are also other drugs available like potassium bromide.

I do agree however that you shouldn't put a dog on anti-seizure drugs the first time it has a seizure. Many dogs only have one, or they have them so rarely that drugs aren't always necessary.

  • I had a 6yr old Boxer, and he had to be killed with eutanasia because of this shit! :(

he had violent seizures and high temperature!

I miss him so much :(

  • How awful, Poor dog.

  • My 6 year old Schipperke has had several seizures recently. Its so different seeing it happen to a dog this size.

  • Thats horrible. Its strange how much worse I feel when its a dog rather a human. weird.

  • My Dillon did somthing along these lines for 2 hours straight, someone had told me once before it was a grand mal. Never knew what they were. But we decided to have him put to sleep. They didn't tell us what exactly happened, but all I know is that it's horrifying.

  • So sad to watch. My 14 yr old Chi/beagle has seizures, I'm glad she's small enough for me to hold when she seizes, and they aren't QUITE this violent.

  • My doberman just started these seizures. we got her medication today (and shes on others for her arthritis anyway). Fortunately shes actually 10 years old so she didnt have to deal with this until her old age. Assuming this is just a phase dad says shes got another year, maybe 2 left but not much.

  • My Roxie has the same seizures.Hers started in Jan. She's 4 and on Pottassuim Bromide. What does your take? And how old when it started?

  • Jackson's seizures started when he was 2. I tried a lot of different drugs on him (phenobarbital, potassium bromide, Zonisamide, Keppra) but none of them worked. He died last Sunday at age 6 after going into a non-stop seizure (status epilepticus). Very sad. Don't lose hope...most epi dogs can live long and happy lives.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. TY for replying.

  • S0RRY AB0UT HiS PASSiNG

  • So sorry about Jackson. My 2 year old Dog had his first seizure 3 days ago and we've been in and out of the animal hostpital each day. He had 5 seizures the first day home and it was horrible. He's on phenobarbitol and has been seizure free for a day and a half. A little loopy on the meds so not fun at all.

  • My dog just started having petit mal seizures on 3/24/08 and I wonder if this means that my dog is epileptic and will it get worse?

  • Hard to say. It wouldn't be surprising either way. A vet should definitely look at him, but only time will tell what his future holds. Hopefully he'll be fine.

  • I hope so. Thanks.

  • how old he

  • he's 6

  • am 13

  • omg thats so sad :{

  • Poor puppy I have tonic-clonic seizures and they're no fun.

  • My dog has grand mal seizures, he's had as many as 8 in a day. after about 8 months of trial and error he is now on phenobarb and potassium bromide. If he happens to seizure I sometimes give an extra dose of pheno along with valium, but no, pheno only given after a seizure is not going to help control your dog's epilepsy. Your vet should be trying to rule out causes for your dog's seizures - there are many possible causes including brain tumor, cancer, toxins...

  • Yes, it's good to rule out various causes but the problem is you can spend lotsa money doing tests and they rarely find anything. Today is Jackson's last day on phenobarb...he got liver disease from it so had to be weaned off slowly. Doing ok so far.

  • Yeesh, best of luck to you guys. My vet wants me to start backing off the phenobarb too and I'm very nervous about it. You know how unpleasant it is to witness your dog having grand mal seizures! I really hope Jackson's epilepsy stays under control. He's a beautiful boy. One thing you might want to look into is Care Credit, we got it when we had to put Eddie through a bunch of tests and it enabled us to get him the care he needed. Lots of vets in my area accept it.

  • my dog had a gran mal seizure for the first time on 2/28/08.she never had a seizure prior to this one.I am having a hard time dealing with it, and not knowing if she will be ok or not.shes only 7 years old and is the most friendlest dog, and has so much love from so many people..the vet put her on pheno as needed.only after she had a seizure.now today I called an animal hospital and they tell me no u cant do that with pheno.now I'm under even more stress and I'm so sad and dont know what 2 do

  • maybe next time he/ she has a seizure put a soft towel in it's mouth.

  • Omg the saddest thing I've ever seen

  • i have eperlepsi my self i just can't figure out why its the nice people who get these dissorders

  • this is so horrible to watch...

my dog just started having seizures...

i have a question for all of u with epileptic dogs.

Before your dog gets a seizure do his face muscles tense up and do they drool a lot???

  • *Cuddles Jackson* Be healthyy!

  • i have a puppy she's like this..after her seizure he loss her vission for a half hour she cant recognize me either...this is so depressing for the pet owner..

  • My 9 year old Sheltie has started having seizures. This looks like what he's going through also. The vet says to slide a towel under his head to absorb his drooling and to keep him from hurting himself on the bare floor. Also stroke his fur and talk to him. It lasts for about a minute to a minute and a half. He eventually gets up and wanders around for about 10 or 15 minutes before he settles down again. It usually happens when he's sleeping.

  • My heart goes out to Jackson. He looks like inbetween seizures he is a most wonderful dog.

Thanks for sharing this horrid experience with us. It is very powerful and thought provoking. Hope he is having a better time of it just now.

  • My heart goes out to Jackson. This brought back dreadful memories of my dog seizing. My admiration for his family is immense. Thank you for being brave enough to share this awful experience with us.

  • poor dog.

  • This is so hard to watch. I have a dog with epilepsy and it's just like what my dog goes through.

My dog does seem to lose some vision after the seizure, but seems to be back to normal within an hour or so.

  • I can't believe how alike our dogs are. Does he lose his vision at all after his seizures? I've started noticing after my Cockapoo's seizures (she sometimes has 3-4 a day) that she'll lose her peripheral vision for a few hours afterwards. She also runs around spastically right after she's regained consciousness.

  • same with your dog...my puppy also loss his vission or blurry...her seizure attack every 3 hours and it last for a minute...
