Fabulous cover - this beach can sing. She did hit the emotion - what she does well is to not over-emote or put all the trills and embellishments that would have ruined it.
I gave it a chance, Lennon has so much emotion when he was singing this but this cover gives no justice to him. I hear no emotion/whatnot out of her singing, and you think she woulda captured that?

I didn't dig it. When you really think about it, no cover can match the intensity of the original. Then again, I commented on Roxy Music's cover of Jealous Guy and I couldn't believe some actually thought it was better than Lennon's original.

Fabulous cover - this beach can sing. She did hit the emotion - what she does well is to not over-emote or put all the trills and embellishments that would have ruined it.

Overall, its not bad... BUT... if one listens to the original and does a little research, the ending of Ms. Aguilera's version completely loses all its meaning. John's voice on the original is completely visceral, like he's crying to God for some answers or pleading for mercy. Christina is showing everyone how well she sings...

i'm familliar with that MSG performance and Lennon states (before performing the song - not included on the Youtube vid) that it applies to a lot of people and not just his life. he didn't look like he was gonna cry to me.

Covers aren't necessarily bad things!
She brings those in her generation who aren't familiar with John Lennon's music beyond the ubiquitous sounds to this song. That's a good thing. If her fans only listen to this one song and seek out the original, she's done a very good thing.
Wishing death on her for singing her best is hardly a good thing and I doubt Mr. Lennon would approve of that wish.

I don't want to put down any artist's ability, despite how legendary or how current they may be, but look at the video of Lennon playing "Mother" at MSG, and how he can barely sing the first verse without crying. This song is so personal to Lennon its almost shocking he shared it with the world.
