Before you can actually use Gmod with HL2, you have to have half life 2 somewhere.

thats pretty cool. specially when the people themselves actually travel through it

wtih portal, you can import half life 2s maps into it and play campaign with out sound or dialog. (Explosions are still there, but sound of enemys guns arent) so you can put a portal where they will walk, but they wont go through it
