@maklay416 It's tradition, actually. They used to cut the ears and tail because they are weaknesses, and people have done so ever since. I agree with you though and I think anti-cropping legislation is a good thing.

If you create harsher punishments for owners of dangerous dogs, then it will create an incentive for only responsible people to own the dogs. @ozzylaza there are a lot of diferences betwwen the 2 breads yes thay look nelly the same but thay are different. And yes thay come frome the same bread but that was many years ago and Amstaff has bread away from being a pitbull to be a much better dog if you ask me.
my gf and i got an stafford to and its a verry sweet dog and no aggresive behavior he has been bitten by an dog but didnt bite back ! so there is no aggresive blood in an stafford its just the way you learn the dog and he sleeps with us and play with the neighbours cat :D

@TimeBomb18311 apbt's are generally more aggressive towards animals vs humans by nature. they where bread and used for generations for bull and bear bating, and badger hunting primarily. if they are associated with other animals growing up that tends to grow out of them. if you raise a pup and dont associate them they tend to be more aggressive than a amstaff if the point i was making. that the amstaff and the apbt is not the same dog. i have a pit and an amstaff and they are both great dogs

@thehomefront Some ABPTs look just like AmStaffs. Some German Shorthairs look the same as Weimaraners are they the same breed? How about a Blue Tick and a Coon Hound? Heres the deal 70 years of breeding makes two different dogs.Neither is better or worse, but one is strictly a working dog bred for fighting and its traits are based off that (powerful hind legs) the other is bred for show (long necks ect),some of the traits maybe parallel to the the ABPT, but are probably slightly less functional.

@thehomefront and as far as differences for basics a staffordshire is a registered breed where a pit bull is a slang for mixed bred dogs. second a staffordshire will never have a red nose. the staffordshire was breed in england as basically an all around farm dog where as the pit was not breed for any purpose so their temperaments vary drastically from one to the other and tend to be more aggressive than the amstaff. the amstaff is significantly stockier

I have a question. I'm going to get a dog for the first time in my life, and I just love Amstaff, but would it be "too much" for some one who would have a dog for the first time and lives in an apartment
First time dog ownership is a big step so MAKE SURE you are prepared!!! That being said, Amstaffs are wonderful dogs. I have had my beautiful amstaff since he was a few weeks old and he has always been raised in an apartment. You just have to make sure you walk them a lot and try to bring them to parks as they have a lot of energy and need an outlet for it.

If you create harsher punishments for owners of dangerous dogs, then it will create an incentive for only responsible people to own the dogs. Granted, there will always be those who will acquire dogs for illegal activities (dog fighting, ugh!), and will continue to ruin it for the rest of us who truly want these great dogs.

I have 2 of these dogs, A freind said to me i wouldnt trust them around kids thay will snap when you dont expect it. I said its dickheads like you that give this dog a bad name youve, never owned one and dont know how loyal to there family thay are. i would put my dogs with kids long before i would put him with kids.....

@ozzylaza there are a lot of diferences betwwen the 2 breads yes thay look nelly the same but thay are different. And yes thay come frome the same bread but that was many years ago and Amstaff has bread away from being a pitbull to be a much better dog if you ask me.

@MeaganN5555 We must educate people that American Staffordshrie Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers and American Bullies are all separate breeds.
Even the dog community & the kennel clubs have the breeds registered improperly. Even worse is that many of the dog attacks that are labeled Pit Bull are not attacks by any of the above mentioned breeds.

@im1greatman Pure bred pitbulls are very rare these days. A lot of the dogs people are selling as pitbulls are American Bully's. The dogs that people call extra large pitbulls are mixed with mastiff breeds and/or American bulldog.

He runs and jumps around . Loves going for walks and drive in the car . at home follows my wife or me around all the time. he wants our company alll the time. You would think he is human

@TimeBomb18311 apbt's are generally more aggressive towards animals vs humans by nature. they where bread and used for generations for bull and bear bating, and badger hunting primarily. if they are associated with other animals growing up that tends to grow out of them. if you raise a pup and dont associate them they tend to be more aggressive than a amstaff if the point i was making. that the amstaff and the apbt is not the same dog. i have a pit and an amstaff and they are both great dogs

if you read down further where i was saying that they are not the same dog. i agree apbts are great dogs and can get along with other animals fine but by nature they tend to without association with other animals become more aggressive towards them than the amstaff does. either way both are great dogs but as i said if you read further my point simply was that is one of the differences between the two breeds naturally and that they arent the same despite similar appearance

@thehomefront Some ABPTs look just like AmStaffs. Some German Shorthairs look the same as Weimaraners are they the same breed? How about a Blue Tick and a Coon Hound? Heres the deal 70 years of breeding makes two different dogs.Neither is better or worse, but one is strictly a working dog bred for fighting and its traits are based off that (powerful hind legs) the other is bred for show (long necks ect),some of the traits maybe parallel to the the ABPT, but are probably slightly less functional.

@thehomefront the reason its an amstaff is because akc recognizes the breed in 1930 and the difference between them and the ukc recognizes the pitbull and their differences. your an idiot to think its illegal to breed the apbt. its not illegal to breed them due to a ban in some places. it only makes it illegal to own them in those limits not illegal as a whole. i have a papered amstaff and a pitbull i adopted from a shelter got the amstaff at 7 weeks and the pit at 8 weeks. theres a difference.

@thehomefront and as far as differences for basics a staffordshire is a registered breed where a pit bull is a slang for mixed bred dogs. second a staffordshire will never have a red nose. the staffordshire was breed in england as basically an all around farm dog where as the pit was not breed for any purpose so their temperaments vary drastically from one to the other and tend to be more aggressive than the amstaff. the amstaff is significantly stockier

Pit Bulls have smaller heads, and are usually taller than Amstaffs. Amstaffs have large, broad heads, and a muscular stocky body:)

@neurocytohemotoxic actually, the dogs used to create the amstaff were the same farm dogs used when creating the pit bull, only the pit bull terrier was later bred to focus on fighting. It is possible that herding and hunting ability has been preserved in the amstaffs, as it has been in the pit bull terriers.

@StefyStuff Pit bulls were developed before amstaffs. Pitbulls were developed in Great Britain and Ireland and brought to the U.S. by immigrants. The AKC allowed a well known early pitbull breeder named John Colby to register some of his pitbulls under the name American Staffordshire Terrier. The first amstaffs were Colby pitbulls. People were using pitbulls for fighting BEFORE the breed was brought to the USA.

@StefyStuff Amstaffs aren't game bred dogs. Therefore, they do not posses gameness. A lot of the amstaffs being bred today are fat or overly muscular. These dogs do NOT have the athletic ability that game bred pitbulls have.

First time dog ownership is a big step so MAKE SURE you are prepared!!! That being said, Amstaffs are wonderful dogs. I have had my beautiful amstaff since he was a few weeks old and he has always been raised in an apartment. You just have to make sure you walk them a lot and try to bring them to parks as they have a lot of energy and need an outlet for it.
