I was 7 years old when this loco made its last run from Portland to bangor. we raced the train "home" from Pittsfield to Detroit. my dad was driving and I remember the excitment of the ride. I was facinated by the speed,sound and the black smoke that trailed behind it as it raced along the track. Fond memories.

I can't beleave that waterville wasted 1.2 million dollars to buy something as pointless and stupid as that!!!!! The 470 definatlly has to go to a museum that'll take care of it and not buy retarded crap that wouldn't even be worth a dollar!!! It would be even cooler if they restored 470 to exscursion use!!!!

Industrial art sculptures like that are beyond pointless - they're incredibly expensive, take very little artistic talent to create, and the end result almost always looks out-of-place and ugly. Even if that kind of money doesn't go to the 470, at least spend it on something worthwhile like schools or the highway department. "Culture;" give me a break...

I used to play on this train when I was younger. Some people are really careless with property like this and it makes me sad. This train is my childhood memory and I live in Arizona now but I grew up in Maine until I was 14.

I offered the "470 RAILROAD CLUB" of Portland ,Maine $250,000.00 to Restore Maine Central Railroad Steam Locomotive Class " W " 2-8-0 #501 to Operational Condition. It,s rotting away at Conway Scenic Railroad N. Conway, NH. I was Master Mechanic of The #501 RESTORATION PROJECT from 1997 through 2001. Because of 470 RR Club thumbing their noses at the monies I had to donate to then back in 2007 I have resigned as Master Mechanic and no longer am an active member of their SHITTY 470 RAILROAD CLUB.
I am also upset with water and the entire state for that matter we lose more history every day around here my grand father work on this train at one time and i wish i could do something for the old girl
I also cant believe with Watervilles debt that they built that huge fucking piece of shit wirly gig in the middle of a parking lot! I would have MUCH rather seen Waterville takes its money and spend it on something that would bring in income for the city. If they did restore the 470 to working condition, it would have brought in a shit load of money from rides ie Waterville to Portland or Waterville to Bangor.
I agree!! This is no way for a once proud loco to spend the rest of it's life. Waterville messed up big time when they had that eyesore built instead.
i think that it is sad i grew up in waterville and used to play on it with my father and now my children play on it. but as time passes and it is ingnored the fact that this is a piece of history piece of my happiest memories. now i can barley climb on it because of all the rust and holes.
Besides, she's still fixable. It's the innards, & the running gear that's important. ;) Makes me mad hearing about the stupid statue again though! AARRGGGHH!!!
Too bad to see her like that. Hopefully she'll be restored to all her former glory someday, and able to grace the Maine central rails again. She'd look great going down the Calais branch again like she did when my granmother rode on her on that line.
Even though some of the parts have rusted through, they can be rebuilt or special made and replaced. It is still very solid, and most is still intact. I could stand on it and I didn't feel any weak spots except for the missing fire door on the side.
Excellent job on the video! Thanks for making this. The 470 is in dire need. I am on a committee to preserve it but we are desperate for help. Grants, money and people caring will save it but its almost too late.
I dont live in maine, but the sculpture looks like a bunch of shit glued together.
