You see, you see? Kapustin plays Kapustin -- and the users below me are engaged in a polite conversation about Marc-André Hamelin?
Maybe they are right... If Hamelin didn't bring some of Kapustin's pieces to his listeners, I don't think Kapustin would be so popular here on YT without MAH.
@BouncingPianist You know, I can see her point. I love his energy, complexity and precision, but there is an underlining intelectual grip that sort of makes the music almost mathematically and unnaturaly precise. There was a time when I had headaches after a couple of minutes of Kapustin's playing because of this flawlessness - just nowhere to rest. As much as I adore and respect him, he can seem machine-like to some, musicians and "regular" people alike.
@engloute which is why I think pianists such as Hamelin are simply incredible. Technical proficiency that won't be seen for generations to come, yet a musical intelligence that goes beyond mathematics and precision, and creates 'music'.
@DualThunder Well, Hamelin is another of my favourites, both for his absolute command of the instrument and for the generous choice of pieces not frequented by many and played well by even less. But many of my friends who are professional musicians say there is a certain "coolness" in his playing - in terms of his frequent "over-objective" playing. I personally disagree because I know that Hamelin is a very witty player and person. BUT - there are two questions.
@DualThunder Does the general public fail to feel his musicianship because of the choice of his repertoire (unknown, difficult-to-listen-to pieces, extreme technical tour-de-forces) or because of the perfection, which he shares with people like Kapustin? I do not know.
I can't stop listening to his compositions. they all simply work so damn well. this man is a genius. my absolute favorite modern day composer. love it!
You guys should just enjoy the music.

Since when are precision and accuracy antithetical to musicality? This is probably one of the biggest fallacies of the classical music world.
