• Too much affect for me ... it's like walking into a beautiful room too full of beautiful things. I feel that way listening to LuPone sometimes, and I love her lots.

  • A little, nothing. I'd marry him a lot.

  • I think much of his appeal (especially in his more recent productions) is that he really bares his soul with his songs. It's comforting to realize that he feels a genuine connection to the play he's in.

  • Isn't this just the best there is? RE's a terrific presence in every way. Thank you, sir.

  • I love Raul Esparza, and he's excellent at playing Bobby. This song is amazing, but he never quite hits the "now" note in "I'm ready now." It bothers me. Haha.

  • @ClearBlueTears Raul hits the note as it ought to be in John Doyles arrangement of this song. It is a little strange but it is not a mistake.

  • I like both John Barrowman and Raul Esparza singing this, Raul is better at expressing emotion and getting the meaning of the song, John Barrowman has more of the lullaby type of voice and is more subtle with it.... in my opinion, both are good... and I love this vid... :)

  • i <3 him xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • i missed this unfortunately, but i've been to this barnes & noble, and i can just imagine people hearing his voice in the aisles outside the room and coming it. i'm sure it must have been packed!

  • Raul Esparza interprets this song well and has a VERY powerful voice. But, dear God, his vibrato is so fast at times that I can feel it in my molars' fillings.

  • its just his voice. julia murney has really fast vibrato too.

  • Sondheim f_ nailed it in creating this song, and Esparza f_ nailed singing it.

  • @clayefferson Sondheim "f_ nailed it in creating this song" because he is god, and makes perfection every time his pen hits paper.

  • watching john barrowmans being alive was like watching a ghost, Raul just has that something, you know? that something that makes you want to cream your pants

  • While I wasn't overly impressed by RE's Bobby in general, on this tune, he is perfection. JB has a great voice, but to me, his interpretation misses entirely, at least the one I've seen here on youtube.

  • that's really his style. RE is the best!!

  • he is trying to hard and the vibrato is toooo....... lets just say he is pushing to mush.

  • he's so smooth with this song but when you listen to Being Alive it's like someone turned the switch and "hello Mr. Hyde"... i could listen to him all day long.

  • i listen to this like everyday.

    pathetic much?

  • seriously. i have a love affair with his voice.

  • I finally have a real reason to get a new iPod that does video: so that I can get out of the house and get some fresh air instead of sitting behind my laptop watching these Esparza clips 24/7.

  • wait, do u mean u can download this to ur iPod? i dont think that it would allow you...

  • There are websites that allow you to DL them

  • can you give me an example? I don't want to use one with viruses and all.

  • keepvid

  • you are wonderful.

  • MORE LIKE MARRY ME A LOT!

  • lolz!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! He is so awesome in this performance... and in general.

  • My favorite is the belt at 3:37 when he goes like I'm before he says ready.

  • I KNOW!! He needs to be cloned for me....

  • This man isn't human...he's perfection...MARRY ME A LOT!!!

  • Oh my goodness - just when I thought i had seen Raul at his most adorable... this video comes along... can he get any more amazing?

  • Raul has alot more passion when he sings the song. that is the difference

  • Everyone has their own preference.

    And mine is Raul~! <3

  • Barrowman is so impossibly good-looking, I always wish he was better than he is. The midwestern twang (Fox River Valley boy, via Scotland), flat 'A's and over-pronunciation of fricatives (esp.'T') drives me insane. I think of him as an OK singer & a 'cheerfully lousy' actor, of the Bruce Campbell/Kevin Sorbo ilk.

  • For a second there, I mis-read that as you talking about Raul.

  • Er . . . no. Raul could sing circles around John Barrowman.

  • John's performance of this song is a lot more believable in my opinion, it gives me the chills every time

  • but.....he's entirely unemotional.....he's baring his soul at this point. john just doesn't add any depth to this (or any) character. this is sheer passion. i love it. maybe his voice isn't "pretty" or "pleasing", but it's passionate and honest. and honesty in acting is always the goal.

  • I have to agree. I think JB comes across as if he's more concerned with making pleasant faces for the camera than with truly characterizing.

  • It is? I thought it was all a big lie and facade to convey to an audience that you are not you?

Hahaha...just saying. I understand what you meant (and agree).

  • Does anyone think that this is a decent audition song?

  • Umm, unless the accompanist will have the music in advance, I wouldn't choose it. I have always been advised not to choose Sondheim for someone to sight read. Though I am sure the accompanist will have heard the song, it might be a bit difficult for them to play at first glance.

  • Hmm that completely makes sense. That is also why now i learned not to do jason robert brown at auditions.

  • Raul Esparza is incredible.

  • IF YOU SAW COMPANY, i am tremendously jealous.

Raul is FANTASTIC. Angel DeSai is ALSO super fantastic as Marta and everyone else is awesome.

  • It's performers like this who remind me why I'm a singer.

  • He's amazing. Words cannot describe him *drool*

  • He's my husband. Despite what the restraining order says. Back off!

  • Raul♥

  • Agreed: beautiful - in every way...

  • I love his crescendos and decrescendos. They're so perfect.

  • I concure lekim. He's perfect!

  • wowie! that was powerful. i wish i could have stayed in new york until friday (i left on wednesay)

  • Oh my gosh... I wish I'd known about this. How does one find out about these things? Thanks for posting. I can't get enough of his performance, and this piece.

  • Wow, his belt is right on and powerful! :-).

  • What do you mean? This isnt even a belt song.

  • I was there. He was the nicest person in the world... and the sexiest!

  • Wow. It looks like he's looking right at the camera. :)

  • So phenomenal.

  • He is amazing! Thanks for posting.

  • He is perfect. Just perfect.
