Too much affect for me ... it's like walking into a beautiful room too full of beautiful things. I feel that way listening to LuPone sometimes, and I love her lots.
I think much of his appeal (especially in his more recent productions) is that he really bares his soul with his songs. It's comforting to realize that he feels a genuine connection to the play he's in.
I love Raul Esparza, and he's excellent at playing Bobby. This song is amazing, but he never quite hits the "now" note in "I'm ready now." It bothers me. Haha.
I like both John Barrowman and Raul Esparza singing this, Raul is better at expressing emotion and getting the meaning of the song, John Barrowman has more of the lullaby type of voice and is more subtle with it.... in my opinion, both are good... and I love this vid... :)
i missed this unfortunately, but i've been to this barnes & noble, and i can just imagine people hearing his voice in the aisles outside the room and coming it. i'm sure it must have been packed!
Raul Esparza interprets this song well and has a VERY powerful voice. But, dear God, his vibrato is so fast at times that I can feel it in my molars' fillings.
watching john barrowmans being alive was like watching a ghost, Raul just has that something, you know? that something that makes you want to cream your pants
While I wasn't overly impressed by RE's Bobby in general, on this tune, he is perfection. JB has a great voice, but to me, his interpretation misses entirely, at least the one I've seen here on youtube.
he's so smooth with this song but when you listen to Being Alive it's like someone turned the switch and "hello Mr. Hyde"... i could listen to him all day long.
I finally have a real reason to get a new iPod that does video: so that I can get out of the house and get some fresh air instead of sitting behind my laptop watching these Esparza clips 24/7.
Barrowman is so impossibly good-looking, I always wish he was better than he is. The midwestern twang (Fox River Valley boy, via Scotland), flat 'A's and over-pronunciation of fricatives (esp.'T') drives me insane. I think of him as an OK singer & a 'cheerfully lousy' actor, of the Bruce Campbell/Kevin Sorbo ilk.
but.....he's entirely unemotional.....he's baring his soul at this point. john just doesn't add any depth to this (or any) character. this is sheer passion. i love it. maybe his voice isn't "pretty" or "pleasing", but it's passionate and honest. and honesty in acting is always the goal.
Umm, unless the accompanist will have the music in advance, I wouldn't choose it. I have always been advised not to choose Sondheim for someone to sight read. Though I am sure the accompanist will have heard the song, it might be a bit difficult for them to play at first glance.
Oh my gosh... I wish I'd known about this. How does one find out about these things? Thanks for posting. I can't get enough of his performance, and this piece.

Isn't this just the best there is? RE's a terrific presence in every way. Thank you, sir.

@ClearBlueTears Raul hits the note as it ought to be in John Doyles arrangement of this song. It is a little strange but it is not a mistake.

Sondheim f_ nailed it in creating this song, and Esparza f_ nailed singing it.
clayefferson 3 years ago 18
@clayefferson Sondheim "f_ nailed it in creating this song" because he is god, and makes perfection every time his pen hits paper.

This Guy sucks compared to John Barrowman. Enter " John Barrowman singing Marry Me a Little " on youtube.

Er . . . no. Raul could sing circles around John Barrowman.

I have to agree. I think JB comes across as if he's more concerned with making pleasant faces for the camera than with truly characterizing.
pfenixignited 3 years ago 10
It is? I thought it was all a big lie and facade to convey to an audience that you are not you?
Hahaha...just saying. I understand what you meant (and agree).
