  • Me encanta esta canción,

  • I loved

  • this song is so beautiful, and heartbreaking at the same time. It was the song that made me fall in love with Mark Kozelek's music. Best line "glass on the pavement under my shoe...without you is all my life amounts to"

  • @dilvsy I agree.

  • The haunted lyrics surrounded by the fluttery guitar melodies make this song unforgettable for me. Oh and the fact that London is mentioned in it makes me perfectly relate to it.

  • Why is johnny depp in that photo?

  • sux

  • luv

  • "One of the best songs ever recorded.." yes i agree,, though this is the worst recording of it-- quality wise

  • Damn, this song hits me hard. I love it.

Makes me think of so much.

  • just heard this for the first time. feels like lou reed singing

  • @llamasarus1 Yeah it's like Lou Reed without a shitty string section.

  • Cowgirl Radio brought me here.

  • the end for moi with daniela........

  • Slow Core, Slate Edge nah just Drift Rock. When I heard Katy Song I was hooked . It was like discovering Low all over again, Roller Coaster is great. Now this is just my opinion but doesn't Red House Painters Roller Coaster and The Sundays Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic sound of the catalyst for the Slow Core genre?

  • @slowghostmusic Bah! Genres. Hate em.

  • <3 Can't go with my heart when I don't know what's in it. <3

  • i love this song, i really love it. deeply. But its a knife

  • there in the clearing i know you'll be wearing your... young aching smile

  • I have been playing this song consistently for the past few days. This is an immensely beautiful song.

  • I was recommended this as a fan of "Low".

Kinda similar sound I guess, but this is a little more upbeat, less gloomy. This has a kind of 70s sound about it.

  • I'm sure all true RHP fans know this but just in case...I like to help people discover great music! Mark's Sun Kil Moon album ADMIRAL FELL PROMISES is a must listen! Beautiful masterpiece. Just Mark and his guitar mostly. And damn, he's a great player.

  • One of the first videos I ever favorited on youtube. Glad it's still here.

  • RHP fans, would you take a few minutes to go to reverbnation dott comm slash Garcon Rouge, listen to a few tracks, and then message me what you think. I've never put up any music before and want to get some objective opinions of people that don't know me but at least listen to similar music. It's all rough but I need some feedback. there's even a Nick Drake cover of "know".

  • I absolutely love RHP/Kozelek. This song is so sick, it carries me through to another place. If you like this kind of music, you should check out ''Fragile Bones(Feels Like Home)'' by Ali Murray, or anything by Ali Murray for that matter. His music is so dreamy and sad and beautiful.

  • Oh Graham, you were so beautiful, but then you broke into sharp bitter splinters

  • @alyzande

Oh Graham you bloody rotten bastard. You ought never to have stolen that beef sheal.

  • I like the instrumentals

  • That song makes me cry so much. Me and my ex boyfriend, had such a dramatic relationship, it was a fail. We used to listen this song, because he liked so much Red house Painters.

  • all it takes is the first handful of notes to make me completely melt away into melancholy

  • I'm a Katy. We're deliberatly hard women to get over.

  • i remember downloading this song on napster when i was in middle school, along with some ambient aphex twin. sad music for a happy kid.

  • I grew up in the 90's so why did it take untill 2011 to find such a great song?

  • @jimjam737 Dude i just found out aboit Frank Zappa a few months ago, such is life.

  • Was für ein Song! So schön und doch so traurig...

  • "I know tomorrow you will be somewhere in London, living with someone, you got somekind of familiy there to turn to, and that's more than I could ever give you" .

  • I keep torturing myself with these songs that mix sadness and beauty...

  • This ending sounds a little like Porcupine Tree on that In Absentia album, minus the overblown production and pretentious.

  • @Ha2YES3 Thank God, another person who loves PT and RHP.

  • @Ha2YES3 lol @ overblown production.

  • Kozelek........god

  • I really love this song

  • @BiffyClyroBiggestFan 'Simon Neil' is a joke who produces corporate nonsense to fund his worthless assault on life.

  • @jrichardson4mvp

    unnecessary

  • Love this song. To me it is third behind "Michael" and "Medicine Bottle". "Michael" just resonates.

  • I can't believe I'm no thinking that this 4 minutes outro is too long!!

    it's just so right!!

  • Song reminds me of my ex Ron and how he cheated on me, But more difficult was that he needed everyone's attention all the time. Hope he's worked things out and is happy.

  • Absolute classic. But it ends way too soon.

  • I wanna play football for the coach...

  • the end credits to life

  • @shintedtades BLAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Not sure I should ever listen to this song again. Not because its bad, its brillian. But, in all honesty its too upsetting and just makes me think of the failures in my romantic life, though in this case I'm the one off to London. :-P

  • ...the fu...is that Johnny Depp back there?

  • Is there any better song to hear when your own relationship is drifting into the last stages of goodbye? "This path seems the blackest, but I guess it's the soonest" is a very fine lyric...

  • Does this guy know how to party or what?!

  • Anyone who loves this/4AD should listen to Arthur russell's another thought as an equally dreamy but more gentle pick me up.

  • One of their better songs, but overall this band is totally overrated and boring.

  • Is this an example of slowcore?

  • @Jitpring Yup. If ya like it then you should investigate Low, Codeine, Bedhead, and American Music Club. Oh, and Idaho are a fine band as well.

  • fucking LEGEND. mark's truely the best

  • how can i not have known this? and how come no one i know knows this band? i've just listened to two of their songs and i'm already sold, and this usually takes some time.

  • jeez, tremendous song

  • i live with someone & her son is so prescious to her i'm not allowed to criticise him in any way!THATS FUCKING LONELINESSS!

  • Does anyone know where I can find the studio version of Evil on here?

  • @abeltyrrell

    Yes, where is it?

  • i used to listen to this song on repeat when i was a teenager. i still think its great but ive heard it so many times i cant even listen to it all the way anymore

  • This song speaks and means so much to me just as you will always mean so much to me, Kat (ironic, that), in one way or another.

  • Good song

  • It's regrettable but you forget about amazing bands like Red House Painters in formative years when your compelled to listen to stuff like KoRn... But 4AD always commanded excellent, not your immediate attention.

  • 멋있다."""ㅋㅋ"'캐티 송"'

  • o shhh .... curtains have swallowed me whole ...

  • this song sounds just perfect to me.

  • this kozeleck is just fucking awesome

  • I wnat 2 stay here with monk, why canT i stay..?

  • The drumming is sublime

  • uhhhhhh i jusat had a 37 year old tell me how he loves this song and i wnat him to get ot of my place.... help me

  • @munk18 Write an essay entitled "Without you, my life amounts to..." where you list all of the positive aspects of him leaving. Tell him to move to London and live with someone. That should clear him out.

  • such a simple line 'whithout you what does my life amount to?' but it sums up exactly how you feel when you break up with someone you love.

  • LOVE.

  • Imagine nice early autumn. Colourful leaves in the ground. 18:00. Forrest. Youcan see a little bit from sunset. And you are listening to this amazing song. Thinking to your girl. Fuckin' A

  • rhp's masterpiece. i've probably listened to this song a hundred times by now. every single bit, from every note to every snare hit to every syllable is perfectly placed, just gorgeous.

  • One of their best tunes, realy love this song.

  • I cannot even explain what Mark's music makes me feel. It kind of takes me to another world, I think he has the abillity to do that, just take people to his world. Simply brilliant. BTW if anybody knows about some bands similar to this one, I would appreciate recommendations.

  • @bacardi119

Listen to "Oh Comely" by Neutral Milk Hotel

  • @bacardi119 Try Talk Talk's amazing seminal album The Colour of Spring

  • @bacardi119 Try Idaho and Codeine.

  • I needed this too..

  • oh god, how much do i love introspective music . . .

  • @deux55 funny introspective music is so expressive.

  • The best Kozelek's song.

  • This is so beautiful.

  • sublime.... loved to have seen them live and perform this.

  • this song is so awesome!!!

  • pure genius

  • l'inizio di questa canzone mi ricorda Imagine di Lennon....

    uh, huh...

  • The seed of katatonia!awesome song!

  • "by the forest of our spring stay, where you walked away, and left an empty part of me....empty and bothered watching the water......."

    great lyrics! great song!

  • @mikeoogle oops correction "left a bleeding part of me" my misquote bad.

  • Don't forget Vinnie Jones in the back left...

  • Why is there an extra drum hit at 3:30? It's not in the original...

  • @philosophywolfe I don't know that is a good question.

  • @sundevilscott To me, it sounds like it was sourced incorrectly or something. If you notice, it sounds like the drum hit was missed like two seconds earlier, and it happened around the same time as the other one. Just poor coding, perhaps.

  • @sundevilscott sounds like just a scratch on the upload. a skip.

  • @sundevilscott I have the same extra beat on my CD. I had the original tape, but think I must have downloaded the CD from Kazaa years ago. I guess there was a dodgy MP3 file in circulation.

  • @philosophywolfe its weird but my cd copy of this song has this odd beat @ 3.30 and I thought it was scratched! Original LP I had didn't have it I'm pretty sure...

  • @philosophywolfe its weird but my cd copy of this song has this odd beat @ 3.30 and I thought it was scratched! Original LP I had didn't have it I'm pretty sure...

  • @philosophywolfe Seems like a bitrate encoding hickup

  • @philosophywolfe i think its a skip in the track

  • @philosophywolfe

    cd skipping while encoding probably

  • @philosophywolfe

the song skips for a second

  • @philosophywolfe who cares its not the point of the song!!!!!!!

  • @philosophywolfe The mp3 has been corrupted in the transfer, I have the same mp3 which I downloaded six years ago.

  • @philosophywolfe meticulous, eh?

  • @philosophywolfe I've listened to RHP for a for years and as far as I'm aware it's always been there. Unless you heard some original release of this that pre dates the album release. Or maybe you just never noticed it, though it is a very memorable/irregular variation of the beat.

  • @Orpheus063 he's talking about the double hit... which is due to a glitch in the conversion of the song... unless I'm the uninformed one... in which case I apologize.

  • @philosophywolfe The song skips on accident...shit happens.

  • Hmm, I wonder if these guys ever listened to Imagine.

  • @mjonas10

I was gonna post the same thing. It's the same chords as Imagine and there's that little riff at 2:31 that's in Imagine too

  • What a great song to slit your wrists to....

  • Super morceau, quelle classe

  • everybody who likes this should put in blue heron its the same guy.

  • @AssassinxDog Its heron blue ...

  • so relaxing and skilled.

  • Stunning album that comes up so rarely in a music collection. It defies logic how i practically killed this cd and in particular, this song. On a related note, I had tickets to a Mark Kozelek show in Montreal a couple of years back and it was cancelled...still disappointed to this day :-(

  • This is a very amazing song, I don't know what took over me, and made me look up Sub-Pop Records website and then start searching bands, but... I'm very glad I did, this song is very, very beautiful...

  • I needed this too

  • I like the new player

  • I needed this too....

  • i needed this today :')

  • Fuck yeah!

  • I actually talked with Mark about this song one night before he went on stage. When he first wrote it he adamantly wouldn't perform it on stage. By the time I met him he seemed amused by the mythology of sorts associated with this song. The way it seemed to me was that he had accumulated so many female fans partially because of the angst of this and other songs of his that the memory of "Katy" had faded and he, well, he was enjoying getting his fare share of ass, for lack of a better word.

  • hell good stuff

  • Maravillosa canción, los años pasan pero sigue causando el mismo sentimiento en mi.

  • Love the way the song transitions into different melodys.Exceptional stuff.

  • Mark Kozelek is one of the greatest living singer-songwriters. This is one of his best.

  • "One of the best songs ever recorded... " - Agreed. This is an amazing song, swept me of my feet..

"can't go with my heart when i

    can't feel what's in it i

    thought you'd come over

but for some reason you didn't

glass on the pavement under my shoe

without you is all my life amounts to"

  • Awesome.

  • Those goddamn house painters! If my house was red, they would have competely have fucked me.

  • Thanks, I'll try an remember that. :)

  • I've just discovered this band a couple days ago, and I seriously can't get enough of them. why aren't they more popular? Seriously. I found them off AOL Radio.

  • i used to lie on the couch and get stoned and listen to this song over and over on the headphones when my wife and i were not getting along; which was most of the time back then; that was 12 years ago.

  • Maybe you weren't getting along with your wife because all you did was smoke pot and lay on the couch all day. Just thinking out loud.

  • nah, theres no way it was that...

  • lol. Cmon now..Nothing wrong with that

  • @wheredidhiseyego "best comment ever!"

  • @t4314rd

how time flies ehh? things never last

  • no matter if i hear this 20 years or 60 years from now, i will still be faced with thoughts of that one person. he gave me a tape of this song after we parted ways. we could just never be and both realized this. terribly hard to leave the one you want, but don't need.

  • un chef d'oeuvre tout simplement ... !

    romantic, sad ... and beautiful

when sadness become beautiful .. this is katy song

  • this song is my sadness blanket

  • red house painters opening for mazzy star

at the MINT. LOCAL LOS ANGELES MUSIC SCENE was incredible back then....

  • Where did that CD go? How come I lived in London, in 1993, and no-one knew this? All the trees, the movements, and this: RHP, an acquired music of greatness, for a gentleman's fine tastes.

  • A masterpiece!

  • even though your with people you still sometimes feel lonely and when you get away you feel more at ease and when your in love with someone and they love you feels like you never been loved but as soon as i listen to this song for the tenth time even the emotions flow from you it takes you apart and puts you back together again we are all puzzles its about finding the right piece to put you back together again

  • @hugo3290 that's funny I was in an art appreciation class and was lying on the florr relaxed with my eyes closed. Listening to JS Bach, and that's the exact same feeling I got. RHP a very cool band.

  • My names Katy! Woo!

This song means too much to me to describe. Its amazing.

  • without you what does my life amount to?

  • this band has something no other band or artist could only dream of they have passion deep meaningful lyrics the sort of lyrics that could carry you away somewere youve never witness before until it ends you go back to real life well if thats what you call it

  • this song means so much too me :´(

  • i know

    tomorrow

    you will be

    somewhere in london

    living with someone

i feel so bad when i hear this. why this song making me always sad?

  • the lyrics and the melody are sad as fuck, that's why.

  • I feel so amazingly lonely...God, I didn't think I could ever be succeptable to such a dreadful feeling...I'm cold and afraid.

  • Cizcan this is a very reflective set list garunteed to bring the blues to the front..... I feel that way too. sometimes. and we live in a world that encourages fear and coldness. please know that someone heard you..... It is very human to feel dread. Keep reaching out to people you trust

My dreadful feeling usually shows itself in loneliness.... be an artist today and share that feeling in a drawing or poem... It really does matter. You matter. Now go listen to a song with hope.

  • what are you afraid of man thats life itself is afraid and cold always will be i just listen to music and the fear subsides

  • rktsncalnc... why the imposters body spray stuff. their are MANY good sad songs, while this is true, and nothing on Nina Simone, if you think it's sooooo great, go ahead and post it instead of attempting to cross pollinate genres. those of us listening to this know of Nina and have the functionality since we're here on earth and in the US to check her out in the time that's been allotted to us. and also, thanks terribly for letting all of us in on that whole "Itunes" thing.
