Placebo is one of the most genre-free bands. At some shows they definitely looked glam, goth, punky, sometimes pure nancy boyish stuff. They've just never been afraid to do whatever they felt like at the time, without feeling a need to belong somewhere. Actually not many bands, artists OR people in general are brave enough or have that particular talent to be as unique as Placebo's fashion style and music have always been. Labeling such a band is a sign of insensitivity to me.
Let me add that Brian Moloko's criticism of "Goth" applies most of all to Marilyn Manson who is the epitome of style over substance. And yet Brian is careful not to say anything disparaging of Manson who is the worst poser of all time; that is, the worst poser next to Brian Moloko himself.
@Justyn1337 That confused me, yeah. They just jumped from goth and deathrock to the shock metal of Manson like it was a perfectly natural progression...

Brian Moloko is a poseur. His band sucks and they always will. He ain't punk, and anybody who wants to react to this in a negative way can eat my ass with salt and pepper because Brian Moloko is a fuckin' poseur who denounced The Nephilim on TV knowing who they are so fuck HIM and his "band".

I signed up to youtube just to agree with your comment. Placebo was such a frivolous band that was on the fringe of both pop and 'alternative' back then. I didn't know any serious person who took Placebo seriously. And Brian Moloko is a ridiculous poser. He does say one or two inciteful things, but then its invalidated by his own music. His music resembled NOTHING of what Joy Division was. Fuck Placebo!
Well, I personally think music is music no matter what the genre, whether it be folk, country, classical, punk, gothic, metal, ancient, etc. Except for the mainstream genres of today like pop and rap....

Gothic is a term for mediaeval church architecture, and 19th century remodels, but the word Goth is applied to the late 70's early 80's New-Wave post punk subculture, that came out of punk, the look is seen in Gary Numan, Bauhaus, Japan, Real Life, The Cure, and even early Dave Gahan dressed that way, lol.
You made me laugh out loud. Whenever someone does that I feel the need to tell them.
Your statement is very grammatically incorrect (but maybe english is not your first language so that is okay). Also, you are stating the very obvious- yes, the guy from Placebo comes across faggy. Does he try not to- probably not. Personally I think he is fairly adorable as is.
It was never known as Deathrock in the UK in the 80's, at least not up here in Yorkshire, (the birthplace of goth). It was called just "Goth", plain and simple! :-)
@ttwnrancon well,,herein mexico deatgrock term is overused.. obviously that's a shame,, cause now deathrock idea seems to be for mayority ,, an excuse to overdrive goth with zombies and halloween elements and an annoying fake everthing goes with sex preference atittude.. don't missunterstand me.. but it's a shame D.R. is more asociated with the zombie gimmick instead the vision of christian death and the burning image..
Why are there so many bands that loath being referred to as goth?
I was not alive or pop culturally aware for any period of time when goth was trendy (Unless you count the little bit extra corpse makeup My Chemical Romance encouraged teens to wear- but I do not).
@sp45ih So why did Eldritch say "I am Goth"?

The curly haired guy knew his stuff.
It still irks me that Manson has to come up in every goth discussion. Especially next to March Violets, Death Cult, and ya know...goth bands.

did anyone ever see Placebo and The Rasmus in the same room? both the same generic pop-esque nonsense.
thought not.
However if someone does achieve the feat could they add marilyn manson and a stick of dynamite?

Turning my own comments against me only makes sense if they're true, snookums.
I won't disagree that The Rasmus play fairly generic, angsty teen rock but Placebo really don't.

The fact that MM was brought up with nodding heads from all makes me rather doubtful of any of their opinions to be honest.
azhdeha 3 years ago 2
Why? This was recorded in 1997, back then MM still got a lot of "goth-qualities"
Singsonggirl 3 years ago
I've got a problem with people calling this music goth. These bands loathed the term. So calling them that is of the utmost disrespect.
