Both requiring near perfection in the calculation of explosives. They are designed to only detonate based upon the method of distribution. If they are going to blow it up before impact, it's armed to ONLY explode that way. Nuclear weapons can not detonate unless the correct sequence of unlocking codes is placed in the correct order and in a correct time sequence to activate the conventional explosives that allow a nuclear explosion. Only the president can provide those unlocking codes. I actually would feel safer if a nuke fell off the wings of an aircraft then a conventional gravity bomb.

Then it will go off if the conventional explosive in the "gun" goes off.
But with the more modern ones, you need a more precise timing to make it go off, and it is arranged in a sphere shape and you cannot achieve that critical mass.

Actually they can. Back then there were few safety features, which is why the USA was so quick to get rid of the older glide bombs and replace them.
The Little Boy device was so dangerous that if could concievably detonate if accidentally dropped due to its inherent design flaw, even if its triggering mechanism isn't active. That's why we never deployed it other than at Hiroshima. All of our other devices back then were implosion type.

If this was primmed, then the conventional explosive could be set off by a fire, increased humitiy, a sudden jolt etc. However, as time went one, the nukes advanced to the point where they would be contained within ICBMs, therefore making them a lot harder to detonate. Not to mention transport. I doubt your average terrorist has the skills to program or move an ICBM.
There was also the B-52 Crash at Thule Air Base (Greenland) in 1968, again the impact detonated the high explosives in the primary units of all four of the nuclear bombs but nuclear and thermonuclear reactions did not take place due to the fail-safe mechanisms in the weapons, there are still 1 MK28 nuclear bomb not recoved, it has the serial number 78252, i'm sure Pentagon will pay you a huge reward should you stumbled upon it ;)

If you use a metal plate instead of the slow compound in an explosive lens you get an 'air lens'. Because of the slow speed of the flying metal plate you can make a lighter weapon with a smaller girth, a prolate spheroid with 2 initiation points.
Many tests were conducted to insure 1-point safety. Some failed with 10 tonne to 1 kT yield. Properly designed they squeeze the pit like a peanut and no reaction takes place.

There have been 2 gun-type weapons(little boy and upshot-knothole grable, which was fired out of a cannon). If both the U-235 'bullet' and 'peg' were inserted, but not the neutron trigger, it could achieve a yield of between tens of tonnes and full design yield in an accident.

Pits are usually hollow spheres or hollow prolate spheroids, but have also been solid spheres, solid prolate spheroids(tiny nukes, small girth, uses linear shape charges to reshape into a sphere) and cylinders(neutron bomb; you want to minimize the fission yield necessary to set of the thermonuclear stage).

@flamedrag18 It does not make fallout. Fallout has a specific meaning; it is oxidized bomb components and soil that was sucked up into the nuclear fire ball and infused with fission products that fall out of the mushroom cloud when it stops rising.
The primary danger of fallout is the very radioactive(and hence short-lived) gamma emitters.
Plutonium is primarily an alpha emitter and extremely poorly absorbed if eaten, but very dangerous if dust is inhaled. It is not anything like fallout.

also, the radiation searching in Spain is for the obvious reason that even though the nuclear reaction didn't happen, something happened to those cores, likely disintegrated and spread across the countryside, they're likely looking for any appreciable sized pieces that were blown away from the explosions that could harm locals.

Hence the lessons taught in High School where our science teachers spoke of enough pent up energy in an apple being able to destroy an entire community if released at once. A relatively small implosion of a fissionable core to release a much more powerful explosion of almost pure energy.

It is standart procedure for aircrew to drop nukes at sea if there is a danger of crashing, etc.. it is for containing any radioactive spread minimal in case of the container breaks. NOT because warheads somehow triggers themselves. learn some physics!!!

While you are correct that the USA joined in ww2, 2 years after it started (at least it was quicker than the 3 years they waited in WW1 lol), you would actually find everyone in Europe would be speaking Russian, not german! The USA committed a tiny amount of troops to WW2 compared to Russia. I'm sure you also know that the USA only fought in a few of the many countries needed to defeat the axis powers too. To get some scale to this, it is worth remembering the size of the U.S, forces for the whole war, compared to the troops who fought in dies at Stalingrad alone. Every allied country fought as best they could, but without the Russians to occupy and defeat whole German army groups at a time, the Allies would not have had enough troops to defeat the Germans.
That could be a VERY interesting debate. Without the Russians sapping the German resources, the Germans would likely have been the first to develop the atom bomb. Not only that, but they would have had a delivery system to attack the continental USA with it it too (the V2), so could have nuked The USA as well as Russia and Western Europe!. With the fall of the UK, the USA would not have had bases to strike back from. A scary thought indeed!

@Yomommalinkmugen actually, it's unlikely, but possible, all you need is the bomb to be intact and the entire surface of the warhead would be heated reasonably evenly, the detonators could be set off and compress the core just enough to cause a nuclear reaction, likely not as powerful as a purposeful detonation, but much more then if only the conventional explosives set off on their own, I've done my research.

Both requiring near perfection in the calculation of explosives. They are designed to only detonate based upon the method of distribution. If they are going to blow it up before impact, it's armed to ONLY explode that way. Even if you wrap two hemi-spheres full of enriched uranium with TNT, you have a small chance of setting off fission.

Nuclear weapons can not detonate unless the correct sequence of unlocking codes is placed in the correct order and in a correct time sequence to activate the conventional explosives that allow a nuclear explosion. Only the president can provide those unlocking codes. I actually would feel safer if a nuke fell off the wings of an aircraft then a conventional gravity bomb.

Then it will go off if the conventional explosive in the "gun" goes off.
But with the more modern ones, you need a more precise timing to make it go off, and it is arranged in a sphere shape and you cannot achieve that critical mass.

Actually they can. Back then there were few safety features, which is why the USA was so quick to get rid of the older glide bombs and replace them.
The Little Boy device was so dangerous that if could concievably detonate if accidentally dropped due to its inherent design flaw, even if its triggering mechanism isn't active. That's why we never deployed it other than at Hiroshima. All of our other devices back then were implosion type.

If this was primmed, then the conventional explosive could be set off by a fire, increased humitiy, a sudden jolt etc. However, as time went one, the nukes advanced to the point where they would be contained within ICBMs, therefore making them a lot harder to detonate. Not to mention transport. I doubt your average terrorist has the skills to program or move an ICBM.

There was also the B-52 Crash at Thule Air Base (Greenland) in 1968, again the impact detonated the high explosives in the primary units of all four of the nuclear bombs but nuclear and thermonuclear reactions did not take place due to the fail-safe mechanisms in the weapons, there are still 1 MK28 nuclear bomb not recoved, it has the serial number 78252, i'm sure Pentagon will pay you a huge reward should you stumbled upon it ;)

You must read what I say more carefully. I didn't say the US - needed - Canada to get through those times of crisis. The fact is, when the US was in a bind, Canada has always been there on the ground, helping to save and defend American lives. Hurricane Katrina and 9/11 are two examples in the past decade. There have been more. I can count one instance where the US came to Canada's aid and I have to go back almost a century. I ask again, when has the US helped Canada through our times of crisis?

Nor do I deny that if Canada were tomorrow plagued with some intense natural disaster that threatened our lives or if there were a major terrorist attack, the US would be the first to respond. If you use a metal plate instead of the slow compound in an explosive lens you get an 'air lens'. Because of the slow speed of the flying metal plate you can make a lighter weapon with a smaller girth, a prolate spheroid with 2 initiation points.
Many tests were conducted to insure 1-point safety. Some failed with 10 tonne to 1 kT yield. Properly designed they squeeze the pit like a peanut and no reaction takes place.

There have been 2 gun-type weapons(little boy and upshot-knothole grable, which was fired out of a cannon). If both the U-235 'bullet' and 'peg' were inserted, but not the neutron trigger, it could achieve a yield of between tens of tonnes and full design yield in an accident.

@Wedwickboy No. Those are gun-type nuclear weapons. Only two of those were ever built. The rest have been implosion weapons which squeeze a "pit" of fissile material with very high pressure.
Pits are usually hollow spheres or hollow prolate spheroids, but have also been solid spheres, solid prolate spheroids(tiny nukes, small girth, uses linear shape charges to reshape into a sphere) and cylinders(neutron bomb; you want to minimize the fission yield necessary to set of the thermonuclear stage).

@flamedrag18 It does not make fallout. Fallout has a specific meaning; it is oxidized bomb components and soil that was sucked up into the nuclear fire ball and infused with fission products that fall out of the mushroom cloud when it stops rising.
The primary danger of fallout is the very radioactive(and hence short-lived) gamma emitters.
Plutonium is primarily an alpha emitter and extremely poorly absorbed if eaten, but very dangerous if dust is inhaled. It is not anything like fallout.

when he said two detonated in Spain, he meant only the explosives detonated, not the nuclear material itself, but even though the nuclear material didn't detonate, the explosion from the conventional explosives could still scatter the nuclear material in all directions, eradiating the area.with nuclear fallout without the nuke going off.

@InfraredGameing where did he say that the nuclear material in any of these incidents reacted? he said the bombs detonated, not the nuclear warheads.
also, the radiation searching in Spain is for the obvious reason that even though the nuclear reaction didn't happen, something happened to those cores, likely disintegrated and spread across the countryside, they're likely looking for any appreciable sized pieces that were blown away from the explosions that could harm locals.

@flamedrag18 Indeed, proper fissionable material requires an evenly spaced compression of its core in order to cause a chain reaction of instability sufficient to release the pent up energy in the core itself. Hence the lessons taught in High School where our science teachers spoke of enough pent up energy in an apple being able to destroy an entire community if released at once. A relatively small implosion of a fissionable core to release a much more powerful explosion of almost pure energy.

@Sparky1002 yup, but the fallout even though it's not as wide spread, is more persistent and concentrated in the area of the conventional explosion of a nuke then with a nuclear explosion, the radioactive uranium and plutonium last longer then any other radioactive fallout occurring in a nuclear explosion from what I know.

It is standart procedure for aircrew to drop nukes at sea if there is a danger of crashing, etc.. it is for containing any radioactive spread minimal in case of the container breaks. NOT because warheads somehow triggers themselves. learn some physics!!!

While you are correct that the USA joined in ww2, 2 years after it started (at least it was quicker than the 3 years they waited in WW1 lol), you would actually find everyone in Europe would be speaking Russian, not german! The USA committed a tiny amount of troops to WW2 compared to Russia. I'm sure you also know that the USA only fought in a few of the many countries needed to defeat the axis powers too. Still, if it makes you feel happy, carry on believing the propaganda :)

@KinkNAbmx There no 'technically' about it lol. They committed vastly more troops. Killed vastly more Germans and took more ground. To get some scale to this, it is worth remembering the size of the U.S, forces for the whole war, compared to the troops who fought in dies at Stalingrad alone. Every allied country fought as best they could, but without the Russians to occupy and defeat whole German army groups at a time, the Allies would not have had enough troops to defeat the Germans.

That could be a VERY interesting debate. Without the Russians sapping the German resources, the Germans would likely have been the first to develop the atom bomb. Not only that, but they would have had a delivery system to attack the continental USA with it it too (the V2), so could have nuked The USA as well as Russia and Western Europe!. With the fall of the UK, the USA would not have had bases to strike back from. A scary thought indeed!

@Yomommalinkmugen actually, it's unlikely, but possible, all you need is the bomb to be intact and the entire surface of the warhead would be heated reasonably evenly, the detonators could be set off and compress the core just enough to cause a nuclear reaction, likely not as powerful as a purposeful detonation, but much more then if only the conventional explosives set off on their own, I've done my research.
