@IustitiaPax Civil war wasn't as simplistic as Soviet history presented it, but it also wasn't as simplistic as you are trying to showcase it as well. Red Army for the most part consisted of a Russian Empire's army and navy servicemen under commanders sympathetic to the revolutionary efforts with some period of infighting for the control of the military forces. Obviously, complete control was never gained, setting a stage for a civil war. Gangs of criminals joined both sides to suit their goals.

I know what it is to conduct a historical research beyond mere facts and figures. How could this Russian historian conduct an in-depth study of the US archives and interview with survivors, as he just doesn't speak English ?
One more thing, there was no welfare or such programs then. My grandparents lived through this but it was a horrendous experience. People on farms did better than city dwellers. They could scrounge something to eat. People went to each others auctions and bid way low to spare the folks being evicted. People then stuck together against a shared common enemy. There was definately starvation back then. My father told me of remembering long lines of people in NY to eat at soup kitchens. And hearing on the radio about a woman who was getting evicted and asked the police if they could wait until she finished lunch first. She was cooking her dog because that is all she had to eat. But also many people ended up homeless and probably never got counted because of that.

Things are relative in politics. I am French, i have travelled and even worked in the US, and also visited communist countries or 3rd-world dictatorships. Makes me want to talk to my grandparents more about this time period. I know there was no starvation going on with my grandma and her siblings/parents. Reply to the US depression. It happened in the 30"s as a result of weather, causing dust bowls. This is climatology. We experienced " the land failure to produce crops" in Canada as well. Just as we have natural disasters today, ie. flooding, volcanos errupting. grasshoppers, lack of moisture,... @IustitiaPax Everyone, but Muslim regions used to be Christian, with Russians being primary target, by your logic, since they were seen as a nucleus of Russian Orthodox Church, which most of Ukrainians were associated with. Targeting Ukrainians as a whole wasn't even an ideological option, and merely on assumption of who they might be on top of that. The butchery did take place, but it was largely indiscriminate. During famine, every agricultural region starved, not just those you've mentioned.

And like modern Russians, he feared that the Holodomor (all the facts and orders of which are documented) would create a new split between Russians and Ukrainians, while he favoured a union of both. But Solzhenitsin never denied Kaganovich' crimes and the death of millions. Seven million were Ukrainians ('reactionary bourgeois nationalists'), but 1.5 millions were Kuban Cossacks and kulak ethnic Russian farmers too. I am not Ukrainian.

Holodomor scholars never denied that also Russian kulak farmers became victims. Russian Orthodox were annihilated in GULAG too. As well as Polish Catholics were.

Adjacent to Kulaks there was a majority of "farmers" without any lands in their private property employed by the Kulaks (this is a normal trend - only minority of population are "business" owners, everyone else are merely employed by the business), which were a classic back bone of communism "the worker and the peasant".

@IustitiaPax Civil war wasn't as simplistic as Soviet history presented it, but it also wasn't as simplistic as you are trying to showcase it as well. Red Army for the most part consisted of a Russian Empire's army and navy servicemen under commanders sympathetic to the revolutionary efforts with some period of infighting for the control of the military forces. Obviously, complete control was never gained, setting a stage for a civil war. Gangs of criminals joined both sides to suit their goals.

Ideologically the latter were supposed to be a back bone of collectivization and could have been a target on any one's scope. Still they were the one's that suffered from famine the most, though the whole notion of orchestrated famine is plain senseless and paranoid, considering OGPU had no difficulties with arrests and exiles for Kulaks.

You see, my father was a Communist Party member and in a Nazi concentration camp (Amersfoort) during WW2. But he survived. In 1956 he was cured of Stalinism, and by 1960 cured from the Bolshevist disease entirely. My grandmother was very realistic. A cousin of hers had been in Reinhard Gehlen's Ostlegionen division. You may be referring to the parts formerly belonging to the Austro-Hungarian empire, small section in the most western part of modern Ukraine and former Polish lands, which have seen butchery targeting Poles and Jews by members of Bandera's UPA, which was formally organized and run by Nazi command. My Gpa said yu could agree to work all day hard labor for .50 but the guy wouldnt have the money to pay you at the end of the day. They had a farm, but many nights had nothing but bread and water for supper. An orange or bananna and a coloring book was a christmas present for child then. They had dove coots on barns to attract pigeons, to eat. Gpa got a job finally as farming wasnt making the mortgage on the road commision for a decent wage, else theyd have fared much worse. Rosevelts wpa's.

I keep getting comments so ill add a bit. My grandparents talked often with horrified expressions about the depression. Millions did starve, but record keeping wasnt the same then as it is now. People were born at home, maybe recorded at a local church if the child lived past 3 or 5. All my aunts and uncles were born at home. Social Security is a by product of the great depression 1935. Gpa called all those programs the dole. You have to have known people that lived through it to understand it.

Time were tough in the great depression in the US. Did millions starve? Not a chance. Corpses would have lined the streets. The country was crawling with muckrakers and activists who would have raised the alarm.

When death rates increase it is often gradual and is accepted in a fatalist way by the population. The death rate increase does not happen inone place at one time.

One more thing, there was no welfare or such programs then. My grandparents lived through this but it was a horrendous experience. People on farms did better than city dwellers. They could scrounge something to eat. People went to each others auctions and bid way low to spare the folks being evicted. People then stuck together against a shared common enemy. There is good deal of hatred and distrurst for the Governemnt and the banks because of their actions during the great depression.

There was definately starvation back then. My father told me of remembering long lines of people in NY to eat at soup kitchens. And hearing on the radio about a woman who was getting evicted and asked the police if they could wait until she finished lunch first. She was cooking her dog because that is all she had to eat. But also many people ended up homeless and probably never got counted because of that.

Things are relative in politics. I am French, i have travelled and even worked in the US, and also visited communist countries or 3rd-world dictatorships. I can tell the difference between a free country and one where information and even travelling are severely controlled or repressed.
