Once again John Williams makes recognizable themes for characters in the film, like this theme for the Thompsons. His albums tell the story of the movie by themselves, because of the themes he makes for certain characters and the movie itself, like Star Wars, Hook (wish had a lot of themes for different characters. This is another reason why I love his music.
@LavenderDarwin - Yeah i agree, those were just classic scores and the one's from the 70's too. I've heard both this and the new war horse strack he's done as well and although both better than 99% of the rubbish you get as film music today it's nowhere near as good as his vintage stuff.
@Russell230870 Are you kidding me? The level of complexity he achieves with this soundtrack is fantastic, possibly exceeding his "Wonder Scores." And besides, soundtrack music is not rubbish today, it's different, but not rubbish. Movies like Moon and Inception may have had repeating styles but the imagery represented by the music is vast, and then you see soundtracks like this, to Avatar (Which had some fantastic pieces in it) all the way to Abel Korzeniowski's Copernicus.
@tastefulbarbarian I find 99% of today's movie scores exceedingly bland and unmemorable, inception i'll give you, that was good. Composers like Hans zimmer, james newton howard, marc beltrami etc don't come anywhere near the glorious composers of yesteryear like Williams,John Barry,Elmer Bernstein,Jerry goldsmith etc. i do like this score but it's just not as good as his peak period.
@Russell230870 Things are growing exceedingly bland because of a lack of audience for anything more. I agree, that most garbage nowadays isn't even worth feeding to the dogs, but people like Herrmann, Williams, Barry, Bernstein, and Newman do exist, their potential is just being fed into garbage that people listen to nowadays. Admittedly, the score could use a little whoompf, but it's a remarkable masterpiece compared to modern soundtracks
@Russell230870 listen to joe hisaishi's scores for the studio ghibli films. Or Giacchino's scores for Up and Star Trek. Also, many composers are also found doing video games. Just listen to Greg Edmonson's score to Uncharted 2 or Christopher Lennertz's soundtrack to Warhawk.
