love this song, I learned it in Canada as part of our French class about 40 years ago but it still sticks in my mind (well, the first verse anyway) which is why I am here looking for the rest of it...this is a beautiful version of it
Does anyone know if the melody from this song was used for anything else? I never sang these lyrics but I definitely sang the melody with some other lyrics. It seems the title is stuck in the back of my brain and I can't seem to pull it out. Any help you could give is greatly appreciated.
@lemmondg ......Thanks! So many hymns and carols use meodies from other hymns and carols, so I'm fairly certain the melody was used for an altogether different song, so what I'm trying to figure out is if the actual melody was used in a different song - not just in the English translation of this song. Something tells me this melody was used for some sort of patriotic song we sang in elementary school. I just can't place what it is/was.
Thanks! What I'm trying to figure out if anybody knows of a song besides either the French or English version of Il est né le Divin Enfant that the melody was used for. Many old hymns and carols traded lyrics and melodies around before the implementation of modern copyright laws. I have a feeling the melody for the song was used for some old American folk song, but I really can't recall. Any help anybody could give would be greatly appreciated.
@lewisnyc Yes...it was used in the movie "Curse of the Cat People"...& sung in the garden on Xmas day by the ghost of Irena. She does a beautiful job.
@lewisnyc It has been used in commercils in music box form, Wish could find the music box. It was sung in a very old black and white horror film called Curse of the Cat People with Simone Simone. She played the ghost of the woman cursed with turning into a panther. Her spirit returns at Christmas as a sort of angel to protect a very lonely little girl and she sings this song to her in the snow.
It also means "Now he is born, the divine Christ child. Play the Musette play the oboe. Now he is born the divine Christ child, let us rejoice this day." And so forth. It's a really good performance
Courage in all those who have the absence of a liked person and who are sad but God is take her(it) the strength in your Despair and you will become Strong listen to these singings(songs) who gives you peace and love Also listen to on the same site MAGPIE JESUS RICCIVITTORIO or Glorious Hymn has Saint Antoine de Padoue - Ricci Vittorio OR TYPE Ricci vittorio or inno glorioso has sant antonio di padova Vittorio Ricci - arrivederci - honor to the deaths - ONE thank you
I sang this at school probably 43 years ago and havn't heard it since. the words hae always been in my head (in a fashion) and now with the magic of u-tube and google it can all become real agai for me. Thankyou for posting!!!
I learnt this carol at the Girls' Grammar school I attended in the 1950's/60's in West Yorkshire. Our Old Girls' Association has now organised a Carol Concert for us this year, where we will sing the carol again! Ah memories! And how lucky we are to have such a fantastic Old Girls' Association committee to arrange this for us. Thank you Girls!
When I was singing in this choir, this was one of my all-time songs, out of all the Christmas and Spring concert selections. In fact, you can see me in this video! I'm on the other side, the alto section, and you can see my head! Yay! I LOVE THIS SONG!
That was so pretty and i love that cathedral! i love cathedrals in general and i really wanna see the mormon tabernacle choir sing there this month :)
Thanks for this beautiful carol from France and most especially from Lorraine. The others carols from France are "Minuit chrétiens" from Languedoc, most well-known in english under the title "Oh holy night". And "les anges dans nos campagnes" with the chorus "gloria in excelsis deo", also from Languedoc my region !

Well, whatever. It won't let me post on benedictus for some reason, so I'll put it here: Hey, everybody! Do you know who I am? Well, you can see me! Tip one: My hair is covering my face sometimes. Tip 2: I am on the back row. Anyone in the choir, guess who I am! Whoever put this on youtube is awesome, thank you! :)
I can see myself as well! Note to hamchick92: lots of people in the choir have brown hair. ;) Can you guess who I am? Look at my post on benedictus for clues. Hamchick, give me more clues! And yes, thank you for putting this on lemmondg!
I know, it's soo cool! I can see myself as well! Um, one thing... lots of kids have brown hair. ;) I have blonde hair and I am in the back row. Any guesses?
Hamchick, give me a tip, which section are you in?
Merci^^

@lewisnyc It's a traditional french tune, and I wouldn't be surprised if there are many different lyrics written to this tune.
