In the album version, he's using a wah-wah pedal with a phaser. Here, ONLY during the outro part of the solo he uses a wah-wah pedal. The rest of the time, he's staggering different distortion pedals because when he stops his solo and lets flea do his solo he still has a bit of distortion but you can see him click off one of his pedals.

It's not about "LETTING him play more"... Rick Rubin is known for being VERY hands off and letting the musicians do their thing.

Don't get me wrong, I wish he did more soloing on the albums, but he's not the type to sit down and write a solo; he's improvisational.

Also, john frusciante writes almost all of the riffs. if was is any musician in any band that determined how the band sounds on their subsequent albums sound it would have been john frusciante.
