3rd Year Electrical Engineering @ UNSW here. The teaching staff there have taught me almost nothing in 3 years. The internet has been getting me through all the exams. I'm just sticking with it for the piece of paper they give me at the end.
friends make all the difference at uni....basically my fundamental theorem of calc...err university is: more friends=better experience....uni is much more stressful than the hsc but the life and freedom you recieve is much better....then again it is much easier to make friends at school than at uni
World class bullshit I say. The lecturers and tutors are the biggest pile of shit, incapable world class fuckwits. The course policies are the biggest nonsense ever. I don't get how engineering at UNSW got ranked pretty high. You'd better be off doing engineering at UTS/USYD etc.
I sit in the comp labs ALL FUCKING day working my ass off for group assignments and then getting fucked over/back stabbed and the teachers/lecturers believing others and BELIEVING I have DONE NO WORK AND FREE RIDING OFF THE GROUP. I arrive at UNI 8AM AND LEAVE 10 PM AND ARRIVE HOME AT 12AM.
This happened to me twice and I was given 28% for one of them (after working so FUCKING HARD). BTW these assignments are worth 100% of the course total!
@chaminda123 That's exactly what I'm going through at the moment. I'm studying Computer Engineering at the moment and to be honest, there's not a single lecturer that has been upto the standard of being "good". They're either late with schedules/ useless notes/ unhelpful etc. I learn most of the stuff myself using the internet and gotta admit its still hard. A good lecturer makes all the difference. I fucking hate it how most computing subjects have a practical exam and its either a pass/fail
@chaminda123 Even if you score a 100 in the theory exam and fail the practical exam, its basically a fail for the course. That's seriously fucked up (I understand that they expect you to be upto "their" standard"). To be honest, UNSW has pretty high standards for being the shit-hole it is.
@nobodygetsmyusername Engineering is or is not for you, if you don't enjoy it, i absolutly agree its a waste of time, but its not the same for everyone. But yeah most people don't enjoy it, and fell into engineering because they didn't know there was anything else.
Doing engineering at UNSW is completely different to that of the REAL WORLD. The real world is where the FUN BEGINS. Learning engineering at UNSW is just dead end "kid yourself you know everything" but you later realise you know nothing. Its just a big waste of time and money. Yeah many people will say "if you don't like it don't do it". UNSW ruins the art of engineering, something I love to do. BTW I have done both elec eng and mining eng. Two bloody amazing engineering fields IN REAL LIFE.
After the exams we were given 3-4 weeks holiday I wish we could be given half of that so we could study better for our exams but again in this university students are not asked their opinion on what is best for them. They have to follow the rules as they are. I remember people who had to discontinue the course while the spend there 3 or 4 years of their lifes. Check the dropout rates.
Well like I said the university back then (and I am sure today too)did not let the department alone fix the exams according to its syllabus the exam period was the same for all courses and that has nothing to do with the department itself. It was a general rule so they could cut examination costs That meant for me who did chemical engineering (which was one of the toughest courses) that I was given the same period to study with people who did crap courses like arts or teaching.
This uni is a rip-off when it comes to giving students real knowledges I was there as an international student and all they did was exams after exams. The worst was that the department did not setup the examination timetable but it was organised from outsiders within the university for all the courses except medicine the exam period was approx 2 weeks, That meant that me who did chemical engineering I had to sit for 10 exams in 2 weeks and other courses just 2 or 3 exams in the same period !
UNSW is great and as a minority student from overseas i found the fees cheaper than america or europe and the people to tend to keep to themselves and not interact ARE in fact the students from overseas.
they think that australia is weird (regardless of the fact that they came ehre to study) and they tend to think aussies are stupid and below them. they seem to be the snotty racists from my experience.
if u r international student then go to europe or canda for high education standard, friendly environment, and job opertunities after education. here at uni the white people do not even like to speak. they live i their groups and would not let you mingle up.
i came to unsw left that and came to alberta university. happy now. got a good job too
For a start, whites are essentially the minority at UNSW & it is the international students that stick together & don't interact outside their of their own. What I really can't stand is when international students can't even speak English properly, when they should. For one of my courses, 80% of the students are international and speak in their native language to each other. Meanwhile I'm unable to interact with anyone since they can't converse in English. Makes me feel pretty uncomfortable.
engineering is cool.. this guys would make a good engineers themeselves...

@nobodygetsmyusername
I fully agree.
I got pushed into university and I was not a pleasant experience the brochures made it out to be.
I very strange experience actually, I met a LOT of students who did not seem to be coping well.
I ended up dropping out and became a self taught web developer with some friends who were into computers.
I guess it suits come people more than others.
