The pH of bentonite clay is 8.3 so it's kind of like giving yourself a perm (not nearly as strong though). That's why it really is best to use apple cider vinegar because it's pH is 3. When the two mix a fizzing noise will occur. Neutralization is taking place when that happens and the pH is being brought down into the safe range for our hair (4-7). 4 or 4.5 is best so that cuticles are smoothed down to lock in moisture without damaging the strand.
@411blah411 Thank you for writing this! I was about to use bentonite clay on my hair, but (luckily) decided to conduct research on the ph lvl! do you know what will happen to the hair in the long run? thanks! -s
@sabmeister001 As long as you mix the clay w/ something acidic enough (like acv) the hair should be fine in the long run. I use bentonite clay w/ acv instead of normal shampoo. I add a few drops of peppermint oil just to tone down the smell of the acv. It cleans the hair and scalp without stiping natural oils. Its also a more natural way of getting rid of hard water build up. Sulfates and phyletic acid also do this same thing. Sulfates are unhealthy and they aren't natural. Phyletic acid...
@411blah411 (CONTINUED) Phyletic acid is much more natural and safe than sulfates but it doesn't remove hard water build up as well because it's already a full compound (as in its already been through a reaction so it won't react with the hard water minerals as readily). I'm sure theres a better way to explain that last part but I hope it's understandable x-| If you need me to explain better let me kno! Anyways, that's why bentonite was the winner for me. It's safe if you use it properly.
You probably put too much clay in the mixture or had is set in your hair too long. I tried it for the first time last night. I got the same results as you without the stripping even after the leave in conditioner.
I tried the bentonite clay on my hair today and it left a residue in my hair, so I just skimmed over it with shampoo. It does clean the hair well and define the curls.
No problem in talking. You are talking about the product, about the pre and post of your hair. You are not talking a lot of extraneous nonsense which has nothing to do with the current video-that is what makes me click off some videos before they get to the point. Keep talking we are listening. Thanks.
I am familiar with bentonite clay but have never thought of using it for my hair and scalp, though I am aware it is a good detoxifying agent. It did wonders on your hair, and your hair turned out gorgeous. What about a hot oil treatment to follow after the clay, perhaps the extra virgin olive oil itself. Let us know what works for you. Thx!
That was a great video, it's a shame that some of the writing you'd put up was covered by some static writing at the top of the screen. I'd like to have read it all.
Bentonite is an absorbent clay consisting mostly of montmorillonite and has an incredible ability to absorb excess oil, so to put olive oil in it would defeat the point. We a learn though, i done it for the first time today on dry hair and my hairline almost came right out the root!!
How does adding bentonite on your hair make it less dry and brittle? I work at a company that makes shale based tile and I work with this stuff all the time. Its very drying on your skin and hair. No idea why you would think it would 'help' dry hair. It dries mine out so much I have to use conditioner every day.
Your hair is absolutely gorgeous!!!! Did you do a big chop at all or were you always natural? If you did do a big chop, how long did it take to grow your hair to the length that it is? It's beautiful.
I use it for my skin and trust me its the best thing for deep cleaning your skin only use once a week if your over 30 make sure you extra mositurize..just try it you can get it from the groceries store or walmart in the black hair section..
You really don't look like you have acne prone skin! I bought a few diff clays and i like the way they feel on my face but never thought about using them on my hair. Now i am curious! Is it drying to the hair because my hair is already kinda dry?
If your hair doesn't have product buil-up, you don't need to use it. Basically it's just a natural clarifier. Use it when you just can't get your hair clean with regular shampoo.
I'm not sure. I have to keep experimenting. I've only use water so far. I like to keep things simple. LOL. But my hair was super soft after the clay was rinsed out. I didn't have any issues at all.
pt2 I'll use more clay next time.I must apply it to my damp hair next time also lol because my hair came out curly poofy instead of defined but my hair still end up soft.
Hey, hey! I am currently having the exact same problem. My hair is RIDICULOUSLY dry and I have changed my moisture regimen like twice. I don't know if its because its winter time and cold but I am going to try the bentonite in a week and see what happens. Hav you figured out something else to add in your regimen?
Thanks' for the video. Have you ever tried Miss Jessies Baby Buttercream? It moisturizes like a creme and provides a light hold like a gel. It leaves the hair feeling a little "sticky" but overall I think it's a great product for natural hair.
I haven't tried any Miss Jessie's products. I always felt that they were overpriced. I know that they are having their Buy one Get one Free sale right now though. If I wore my hair unstretched, I would probably be more willing to try them.
Nah. I always thought they were overpriced. My bestfriend loves it though. If I wore my hair out most of the time, I wouldn't mind trying it. But since I'm in buns or in braid outs most of the time, it would be a waste.
My hair was fine after, still a little dry. BUT now I realize it was my deep conditioner that was drying my hair out. For some reason my hair only likes fatty conditioners. KeraCare was really bad for my hair.
How has the clay worked for your acne? I've seen it in the stores.. but i would have not thought it was for hair. I will try this with a deep condition afterwards for damaged dry hair.
