Lheterme has a goat now called Joelle Milquet, LOL ! It was given to him by a Flemish radio station for his birthday. The goat goes 'noooooon noooooon' ;-)
it's strange that a woman says to the wever that he is a bad belgian...meanwhile, he speaks perfect the 3languages of belgium...and she doesn't speak good dutch or deutsch!
The roots of this country are diseased, the frenchspeaking never did anything to make us forget the past,au contraire.Flemish students for example are obligated to learn french starting at the age of ten, whereas for walloon students learning dutch only becomes an option somewhere in high school. And for the ancient frenchspeaking bourgeoisie in the flemish surroundings of brussels it's too much of a torture to speak dutch when,on rare occassions, they have to deal with the government.I could go on
Like I said: I'm a Francophone from Brussels, I'm fluent in Dutch, I respect you guys and your language, but I don't feel the need to apologise for something that happened in an era when I wasn't even born yet. In Brussels Dutch is compulsary in all Francophone schools. In Wallonia schools have the choice to make Dutch compulsary or not, and most of them do. Though I admit that it should be by law compulsary in all Walloon schools. However, things are changing in Brussels and Wallonia.
Francophone politicians (Rudy Demotte, Charles Michel), journalists (Béatrice Delvaux, Christophe Deborsu) and even sportsmen (Vincent Kompany, Philippe Gilbert) speak Dutch on Flemish TV. Of course it will take time before we're all bilingual, but that's only natural. Francophones in the Brussels outskirts want to do their paperwork in French not because Dutch is a torture but because they have the constitutional right to do so and because they're a 85% majority in these municipalities.
We don't need an apology, we do ask respect for the language barriers. How do you think it works in Switzerland or Canada? You adapt to the region you go live in, ask the Québecois. It doesn't matter if you're in the majority in some communities, following that logic Brussels' official language would be arabic and it'be part of Marocco.
You're comparison makes no sense. Firstly, Brussels doesn't have a 85% Moroccan majority, while certain "Flemish" suburbs of Brussels count up to 85% of Francophones. Secondly, changing an internal administrative line within Belgium is not the same as adding a Belgian city to a foreign country. Thirdly, the Francophone majority in "Flemish" suburbs only asks an adherence to Brussels because the Flemish Government consistantly corrodes their constitutional right to use French in public dealings.
My comparison makes perfectly sense.I was just using the vast number of belgian-morrocans in Brussels to make a point. The Belgian federal model is based on a territorial principle, lines were drawn, different areas with their specific language, identity, laws, culture etc. This was done to make things practical and clear and end all the disputes once and for all. Those lines pretty much equal those of countries.Countries co-exist peacefully when they respect each others borders, same for our communities
And it's not like we forbid people to speak french or any other language on our territory. But in our borders Dutch is the official language for official stuff, there's nothing unconstitutional about that.
You fail to make a point, since you're comparing two things which are incomparable. The federal entities within Belgium don't equal the status of indepedent countries so they shouldn't be compared to independent countries like Morocco. My point is the following: I do accept that in Flanders the official language is Dutch. However, the Constitution grants the francophone majority in 6 suburbs of the Brussels periphery the right to use French in public matters.
But over the last years the Flemish Government has started this anti-francophone witch hunt in the 6 "facility communes" by promulgating all kinds of petty rules aimed at reducing their constitutional right to use French to an absolute minimum. Because the francophones are sick of this constant narrow-minded bullying they now ask the adherence of their suburbs to the bilingual capital. If the Flemish Government stopped to make their lives difficult they wouldn't mind living in Flanders.
'anti-francophone witch hunt',that's just plain silly and untrue, blowing things totally out of proportion and accusing the flemish of all sorts of nasty things is just low and unfortunately a popular strategy. The facilities are still there as far as I know. And by the 'bullying' I guess you mean the 'omzendbrieven',but if you're even a little bilingual this shouldn't be cause of much inconvenience.Without 'omzendbrieven' Francophone parties would still be demanding expansion of Brussels,no doubt.
It is a fact that the official Flemish policy is to make the use of the French facilities virtually impossible. In theory the facilities still excist, but in reality the circular letters have turned them into an empty box. The inconvenient truth is that this is bullying. Maybe you think it's blown out of proportion, but how would you feel if you lived in a region were the local government seizes every opportunity to complicate your constitutional rights as much as possible? Do you see my point?
All I see is deeply rooted contempt and an unwillingness to show even a little respect for our hospitality and identity. And this discussion is too nuanced for this place, maybe we should just follow youtube etiquette and resort to insulting each other cuz this could go on forever...
And all I see is a deeply rooted bitterness for an unresolved past. Flemings should learn that a francophone facility commune resident who prefers to do his official paperwork in French doesn't despise Flemish identity. It's just easier to do your paperwork in your mothertongue. So if the Constitution gives you the option why shouldn't you make use of it? Flemish "hospitality" ? Allowing Belgian citizens to live where they want in their own country is no hospitality, it's only natural ;-)
People make the life of one other more bitter because there's no national feeling. Belgium is only kept straigth by propaganda and laissez-faire mentality. Belgium is the prolongement of the Spanish Netherlands based on a slave mentality.
It's the state that prevents Flemish to be Dutch and Walloon to be French, and people keep going without being attached to one another except for the fact they're Europeans.
People keep going because life is relaxed. Good for you, Brusseleer (Belgian).
@MrFloyd29 My relevant opinion on that incident is that, you see, us flemish of pure aryan lineage just don't like to mingle with africans or any other people of dark complexion, not even over the phone (even more so if they speak some kind of latin patois). You should know that about us by now.
If I should call Nigeria how to go about doing some efficient ethnic cleansing, would they explain it to me in dutch? I do wonder.
