  • Webb ran a 52.1 last 400 thats one crazy kick

  • I'm hoping to get my mile down to 5:00 by the end of my freshman year, so that I can be at 4:30 as a Junior.

  • this is a great video he couldn't have been happier at the end of the video biggest smile in the world

  • Meet him at battle of the Potomac xc meet

  • SLHS represent!!!! woww miss this kid

  • Nice half-mile negative split.

    Major props.

  • i only run a 4:38 :/

  • @purpamunky: I know Steve Scot....lol its not important I just wanted to say it :P

  • @FutureolympianXC: *Scott

  • no record last forever.

  • i'm a freshman and I ran a 3:51.13 mile

you think that's good i did the 2000m in 4:53.67

i probably won't do track next year, though

  • @Sinistercharlo funny.

  • @Sinistercharlo good.

  • @Sinistercharlo no you didn't?

  • @Sinistercharlo are you, uh, kenyan?

  • great moment in time

  • I saw alan webb in person a couple of days ago!! he came to speak with his former high school

  • @hcpspilakarb that's BS you don't go to South Lakes. I am the fastest distance runner at South Lakes right now and im pretty sure Raczko would have told me if Alan Webb was coming to talk to us.

  • @dexto2000 well it's clear u don't go to south lakes since u wrote the last part of your comment. wats ur name buddy. lets see if u actually do.

  • They don't even look winded.

  • @gamingenius351 no coincidence. Alan webb's little brother goes to Franklin Central high school in Indiana. Few minutes south of Indianapolis. He's pretty good, but bot as good as his older brother was.

  • You can't compare Webb's race to Jim Ryun's. Put Jim Ryun's race on a fast rubber track like this and he does just as well as Webb. Ryun ran his record on a surface that was very hard, like asphault. Also, if you want to be a great miler, don't put Prefontaine's poster on your wall. He was a great runner, but not a great miler.

  • @writerjmd Yeah you're right, he wasn't a great miler. He was a great 3 miler. And I'm pretty sure if you put a Prefontaine poster on your wall it won't taint your mile time.

  • @desertfoxfilms The whole problem with idolizing Prefontaine is he never got anywhere. He set American records, but he couldn't win internationally. Turns out Alan Webb set American records, but hasn't won internationally either.

Same with Hayward Field. It's good for an American track, but the truly great races are in Europe.

These days Africans with far superior form have taken over, so there's not much hope for an American world-beater. Steve Scott was the last, best chance.

  • @writerjmd Yeah you're right, he wasn't a great miler. He was a great 3 miler. And I'm pretty sure if you put a Prefontaine poster on your wall it won't taint your mile time. Don't blame the poster, blame your performance.

  • @writerjmd I can see that you probably know a lot about running (I don't), but I think that anyone should be able to put up a poster of motivational figures... can an aspiraing football player look up to Michael Jordan for inspiration? Absolutely. Should a politician look to Ghandi's life for guidance? Don't limit that. I'm sure Alan Webb didn't put up that poster strictly for the mile. =]

  • @x3u93n3x I wasn't really trying to argue about posters. I just like to comment about Jim Ryun, who is a hero of mine. Of course it's good to have people like that in our lives...

  • @writerjmd totally agree. =] (and I didn't even know who Jim Ryun is until today!)

  • webb is a talented runner, with a sick stride

  • "Jeff Ryan's record"

  • I can run a 3:30 mile, its three times around, right?

  • @tadaa11 4 times around which would make ur mile a little above 4:40, which is still really really good (assuming u dont slow down on the 4th lap)

  • Wow webb looks like he's in college already haha

  • i was there

  • There still hasn't been anyone better than Ryun:At 18,he was the best in the world.Had he come along today with these tracks and our increased knowledge,3:39 may have been possible for him.

I'm hoping that Jim runs one more race, this time for President in 2012.Perhaps this time,he beats the Kenyan.

  • yay he went to school in my district...

  • @TheMachanga I did that too. Except I was on fire.

  • @TheMachanga bull shit

  • @TheMachanga lying doesnt make you cool faggot

  • @TheMachanga stop lying and get a life

  • @TheMachanga On a bike

  • he looks like a chemistry teacher at my school ahah

    weird

  • im in preschool, i shit bricks and i run a 3:00 mile time... STFU

  • @munkypoo91 u run 16 meters in 3:00, not 1600 meters

  • Comment removed

  • @munkypoo91 hahaha kid, nice one. there are also faggots out there who try and tell people they don't know some bullshit, just because they have no fucking friends or life. Then when someone like me comes in they try and back themzelves up. like just stfu.

  • @hcpspilakarb Again You've just proved you're self to be a complete fucking moron first of all its "themselves" you ass clown stop trying to type so fast to respond fat ass if you need to take a break and breath its only youtube. Judging from the comments on your page and you're overall speech you seem to be a lost 31 year old trying to find joy in life again by flaming some random person on youtube who left a comment months ago.Done responding waste of time looks like Alzheimers set in early.

  • @munkypoo91 yeah, ur right I shouldn't waste my time with a worthless wannabe. just be honest this time and tell the world u run 16 m in 3:00, not 1600.

  • @hcpspilakarb do you realize that he just posted a troll coment dumbass

  • you all are fucking liers man god thats so sad how you lie about your time

  • There's a guy that goes to my school named Patrick Webb... He might break the school record for the mile run... Coincidence?

  • Kingman Highschool??

  • @Broncosman5 :O Yeah...

  • yeah hes only a freshmen

  • @Broncosman5 Yeah but he's still really good at it.

  • @gaminggenius531

School recordsand national records are huge differences though. I'm sure there are other Webbs in the United States about to break their school records.

  • WTF?!?! The only name they got right was alan webb >.<

  • Comment removed

  • @ABOUT258dirtybeanersL: its our accent.

  • Actual Be Naughty brides benaughtyman.info

  • YEEEAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!

  • Question I've wondered about before: The so called "metric mile" = 1500m. Mile most commonly referred to is 1600m. But a "true" mile is 1609.344m - a little more than 30 ft longer than 4 laps.

So are mile records 1600m or 1609.344m?

Also rabbits in track races are runners that set the early pace and then drop out and rabbits in the wild are not actually rodents as some ppl seem to think.

  • @rabbit605 yeah, it's actually the world record progression for the 1600m. the world record, a 3:43.13, was actually done in a 1600m i think

  • @rabbit605 I am not certain about this.... u are right about the distance being the latter 1609.344.... m I used to race track for and ncaa div 1 uni and ran the mile a few times indoors. track is 200m and we started around 9 m back from the start finish line so i believe ur right about the record being for a 1609.344 m race. Also to the twat below there is effectively fuck all difference between 1500 and mile once you know which your running before the gun goes off.

  • I ran a 6:13 the other day!!! Is that good?

  • @richsuga no

  • @pritchsds

    Did I mention that I'm 72?

  • @richsuga well no. you didnt. but thats amazing!

  • @richsuga no

  • no one cares how old you are or what your shitty running times are

  • wow this was amazing i cant wait for track!!! first year of track but during xc i can run 4:34 mile

  • @zackfilms13 Tell me about i cant wait till track starts

  • An impressive time for high school, no doubt, but running with professional runners to set a high school record is completely unfair to all the other high school runners who could run close to that but don't have rabbits or other pros to pace them.

  • @thunderpantherx

Would you enlighten me for a bit? What kind of high school runners did you have in mind when you said that? If I recall, Donald Sage and Steve Magness also had the opportunity to run in the Prefontaine Classic as high schoolers, and they still did not break the four minute barrier. Sure Sage was merely 0.3 seconds off, but this performance far surpasses the four minute barrier. I find it fair by all means.

  • @Raimakusa Look man I'm not looking to start a fight with some random kid online. I'm just saying that a high school record should only have the ability to be set if it is in a high school race. Running with professionals changes the game completely. You're allowed to disagree with my opinion, and quite honestly I don't care if you agree with me or not. So let's not be a troll now, alright? :)

  • @thunderpantherx Trolling? I honestly just wanted to know what kind of high schoolers you had in mind. I'm looking for your opinion, not a tussle. Sorry if it came off that way, but I'm curious. We have obviously seen the results from Jim Ryun and Alan Webb, who were incredibly gifted in their own right (probably should use present tense for Alan though as he still has a few years left in his running career).

  • @Raimakusa Ok fair enough, I can definitely see your side. Let's be honest though, Webb may still have a few years left in his racing career but it's not like he's going to do anything else impressive. His career has tapered off a lot lately and he hasn't shown any signs of being able to get to where he could potentially be. So I think it is fair for you to use the past tense for Webb haha :P

  • @thunderpantherx I would have loved to see the likes of a German Fernandez or even a Mac Fleet in a professional field of course. And to be clear, there are high school only records as well, but I find it more enlightening to see how younger athletes would fare in races of higher caliber.

  • PREFONTAINE all the way

  • @Bjob4thewin someone who sets the pace for the runners and drops out before the final lap

  • when was this like 2002???

  • @rockinsurfkid It was at the 2001 Prefontaine Classic.

  • @greekfiremedia thanks i wanted to know. this is a pretty epic race

  • hicchams a beast.

  • I hate to be the naysayer, but I just really don't think Webb can get the mile world record. He's growing old for a track star, and it simply is becoming out of his reach.

    Hopefully, he proves me wrong!

  • @Chocosizzles what? he's 27! most distance runners are at their running prime around 25-29 years old

  • @MrDistanceRunner Mmmmm. I don't know. It varies between person. Some people may find age 22 their prime age. Some may find 25 the age. It's a very unpredictable factor.

  • @Chocosizzles

He overtrained and put on way too much muscle as well. He's done I reckon.

  • people are saying that ryun holds the record even tho webb beat it, why cant you people just accept the fact that the kid beat ryun's record? let him have his record and the moment, stop demeaning it. people say, o ryun did it without rabbits, yes there was a rabbit in the race but for hicham, who was WELL out in front and had the rabbit nowhere near webb, webb had to run in last place and pretty distant too for the first lap and had to set his own pace and do it with wind on the backstretch.

  • 54 first lap!! that was crazy!

  • Jim Ryun is truly the current record holder.. He is the only one to run with no rabits just other high schoolers

  • @superchunk1234 ...he didn't have rabbits. Hwas racing the best in the world. He has the record for the "high school only" mile in 3:58

  • @superchunk1234 Ugh. Shut up. A mile is a mile is a mile. He still had to run it.

  • mile is 1609m not 1600

  • Alan Webb is 5' 9'' wtf how do his legs like never move?

  • damn theyre like greyhounds haha

  • Alan Webb is definitely an elite miler. He just needs to learn how to bring out the best in himself when it counts the most. I think he is capable of breaking the world record in the mile but his 20's are coming to a close here soon. Hicham set the world record when he was going on 25 and Webb is a few short years away from 30

  • How can this be a thumbs down?!

  • there will never be another Hicham the king of long distance for a very long time.

  • Jeff Ryun's record?

    4:32

  • Webb is impressive for ending up 50 yards behind the winner. With today's fast Tracks, you can only imagine

how fast Ryuns time would have been. Check out some on Ryuns races on Youtube.

  • 4:31 Did the commentator really say "Jeff Ryun"?

  • @pll1993 no

  • I would love to see Alan Webb seriously challenge the current world mile record. However his 20's are coming to a close here as he is 27 now. I still think he could break the world mile record but he would have to have everything going for him on that day.

  • Don't think so, El Guerrouj is a legend. His world records are going to stand the test of time.

  • How gracious and great was El-G in this race, raising Webb's arm. Love to see this.

  • when was this?

  • A great race by a great runner. Back up 40+ years, take a cinder track and some shoes that feel like they are cardboard and leather and make him almost a year younger and you have Jim Ryun. Webb had to weave around a little traffic, but Jim had more adversity. Both good runners, but my money would have been on Jim Ryun.

  • 1:00

lol why is it 'ironic' that webb has a poster of pre on his wall? which top runner doesn't?

  • cuz its called the Pre Classic? idk haha

  • Because few people, including this announcer, actually know how to use the word "ironic."

  • lol so true. . .

  • @decadyne i know lmao i was thinking the same thing

  • Comment removed

  • OOOOOH you guys do the 1500 thats a big difference, we do the 1600, about a 15 second difference

  • its a 15 second difference if you're alan webb..

  • @ilovethekunthis74 15 second difference if you run at 4 minute pace

  • @ilovethekunthis74 Yeah we do a real mile not that 1.5k bs

  • @TitoDaTuba you know the 1500m is the real stuff. like mile is ok. but whats the point in making your life complicated and having to actually fight to hit the curve. you can just run straight for 100m for the 1500m and then you hit a curve. Much less aggrevise and nicer. Also, no one does the mile because it's not a standard race. it's a weird race. thats why only one country in the world runs miles. And tell me when you run a 4:09 1500m cause thats what i run. and in mile 4:22. booya!

  • Well, at least you have Craig Mottram.

  • i recon thats fucking fast for a 14 year old kid. thats gotta be the world record for that age. ive never heard of any 14 year old faster than that. i'm 14 and do a 4:45....whats that kids name?

  • Pretty solid time for that age group; not really jaw dropping, but it's very impressive nevertheless.

  • ryan hall is like 25. I trained with him in Big Bear last summer. He really is amazing.

  • This has to be one of the most interesting high school records ever set. In so many ways!

  • That year was a great year for american high school running

  • It's too bad for Webb to never fulfill the bar that was set for him. He could have been the next great miler, and he showed at times that he has the ability, but the consistency never came through.

  • umm pleas tell me WHAT IS A RABIT????

  • its a small rodent that shits everywhere

  • A Rabbit is someone who is placed in the race too not run to win, but too set a fast pace for others runners who are trying to break certain times or run certain paces. For example, if somebody wanted to break 4 minutes in the mile, the "rabbit" would run 59s for 2 or 3 laps so the other runner stays on his needed pace.

  • thnxs

  • its someone that goes out too fast on purpose to try and make the lead runners tired

  • or to pace help pace the lead runners

  • I wish I could favorite this video over and over again, it makes me love running so much.

  • Alan Webb has been my hero ever since I've read the book "Sub 4:00 Alan Webb and the quest for the fastest mile" Great book anyone should check it out very inspiring. I'm hoping to break 4:45 this year as a freshman. Cross country and track for the win!

  • go for it man, I made it to 4:39 as as a freshman and 4:22 as a senior. It's just work. log in the miles and you'll get there.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice times. Mine:

    9th-5:17

    10th-4:58

    11th-4:47

    After XC this year-4:45

  • deffinately eat a lot of carbs

and take two days off on the weekends

take vitamins and drink a lot of water

  • "he will be happy to break 4 in last place" lol they had no idea what was going to happen lmao

  • I was around 6:42 in highschool freshman gym class. I was thinking about going out for track this year i figure if i drop 15 sec. off my time each week i can compete with this guy when i'm a senior.

THX. I appreciate comments, feedback, or reccomendations!!!!!

  • Dropping 15 seconds per week is completely unrealistic. Keep in mind, Alan Webb holds the national record for a high school age mile. Not only did he work his ass off, his gene pool must have been extremely athletic. The amount of people who even have the physical potential to do this is is virtually zero. So for now, speed racer, just focus on getting miles in and building up your base. You will improve, but most like not anywhere near a four minute mile.

  • 15 secs a year lol that is like 5:42 lol and I guess if you stick to it you can break 4 but depends i would say if you like do it and not work ass off you can get like 5:01

  • sorry, but if you knock 15 seconds off your mile time consistently, EACH WEEK, you're a prodigy.

  • "speed racer" lmao!

  • Dont get your hopes up...

  • U R wrong!

  • your team-mate probably peaked too early. . .as in too fast too soon

  • i cant sub 9

  • ima freashmen in high school and i can run the 1600 mile in 5:26. is that good? I want to run sub 4 someday

  • no. fail.

  • Yah uh you should try and train a little more if you wanna break 4 minutes im 12 and i ran a 5:28 this year...im now down to 5:09 (im almost 13) I want to break 5 this year in 7th grade. Ive been running since i was about 8 or 9

  • My teammate ran 4:21 as a freshman and he never got below 4:00 even in college... Good luck dude!

  • I believe webb said he ran a 4:23 in freshman year. If you can run 4:21 in freshman year and never break 4 minutes thats just failure.

  • there was a freshman at my school last year who ran 4:17 for the 1600m, no lie -_-

    it pisses me off!!!!

  • Ya thats really really fast. I'll be lucky if I can break 4:40 this year. (freshman

  • ese webb es increible

no nomas tiene este record pero tambien el record americano en la milla

    3:46.91

  • the guy who went out in the front right away is a genius lol

  • you mean the rabbit? the guy who's only there to pace the field through a certain distance?

  • lol great sarcasm

  • It's got my three hero's. Lagat, Webb, and Hicham!!!

  • OMGWTF!!! I saw Lagat!!!

  • what is going on with Webb these days

    3:40's for 1500m????

  • 1500m isn't a mile, it's less

  • Damn... If you can run the mile, you can run any event.

  • not true. a marathon is a completely different race. not to say that cant do that.

  • no, a 3:37 does not convert to 3:49

It converts to around the area of a 3:54 mile

  • so ur saying that people that run 3:37 for the 1500 run a 17 for their last 100?????? no.

  • Uhhhhh, do you even run track?

The final 17 seconds is a estimate--- you have to factor in two important facts: ONE, the athlete is probably tired as @#&*, and adding an additional 100m doesn't mean the athlete would be able to sprint it all.

TWO, I said MILE. There's a difference between the MILE and 1600. A mile is slightly longer by about 1.3 seconds in most elite races. Therefor you factor in that + the final 100 and you get somewhere around 17 or so seconds.

  • fine u win. i just checked and a 3:37 for the 1500 would give u and average mile pace of 3:53

  • 109 meters...

  • Stop telling your times.... nobody cares..you could be lying. make a video about it and well believe you

  • my goal since 9 years old has been to beat almost all his records im 12 almost 13 already running a 4:55 mile (yes 1600) and ya i got a long way to go but ill make it happen

  • im 6 and i run a 3 45 mile.... like seriously stop lying about your times no one cares even if its true or not.
