  • this is so damn disappointing to watch

  • Verwijlen is getting the gold in London, you'll see

  • wow, looks very sissy compared to sabre

  • @pureintellectual if you can swing a baseball bat you can fence sabre. epee actually takes SKILL

  • @pureintellectual you obviously know nothing about the weapon of sabre and the art of fencing.

  • @pureintellectual you obviously know nothing about the weapon of sabre and the art of fencing.

  • @michael17415 you think either take skill? Foil is the most skilled way of fencing, with epee you can hit anywhere which isnt "real fencing"

  • @Friendguystarcraft isn't real fencing? im sure if i had a REAL foil and was ACTUALLY fencing you and stabbed you in the face you would still die even though it wasn't on the torso. epee is more realistic

  • Sorry to be rather dumb..but can someone explain to me what the lights mean? Is it red for a hit and green for a ..what?

  • @priapus56 each side has its own color light the light goes off on the side that got the point

  • @beavermonlives Thank-you very much. That makes things a little clearer.

  • @beavermonlives only in this footage the light that goes off is for the hit the fencer the other side gains, possibly because its the side the audience are facing.

  • Interesante. En izquierda la guardia es muy baja en defensa y ataque

  • Porque se enciende la Luz del oponente cuando el otro toca, no deberia ser, yo toco mi luz se enciende??

  • whats better epee, foil, or sabre help please i wanna get into the sport

  • @ThePeckerwood310 In my opinion, epee by far! I started out with foil and now that i have been fencing epee for awhile i never even get my out foil equipment out because i love it so much. Epee is the most fun out of all three weapons because of the speed of the bouts and the rules; and also it lets you have your own style, more so than sabre or foil. Hope that helps!

  • @LadyyGrayy thank you so much that helps alot, and one last Q wich style has more sword techniqe tan a 5 second match

  • @ThePeckerwood310 Well in sabre almost attacks happen within 20sec of the directer saying fence, so it is really really fast paced but its more stab stab oh i hit you good. Vs foil and epee you still have fast attacks and quick bouts (epee being the faster of those two) but with those weapons you really take more time to set things up and feel out your opponent. So sabre is the fastest but there is more luck, so long answer short when you take out luck i would say epee. :)

  • @LadyyGrayy ok thanks so much, it sounds like eppe or saber are my kind fencing

  • @ThePeckerwood310 Oh just one more thing, some salle's will have you take beginning foil and epee before letting you take sabre.

  • @ThePeckerwood310 SABRE SABRE SABRE

  • Epee is the best for guis like me, i'm kinda slow for foil and i don't like just to go and brake the blade on my oponent, you can think, find opens and its more real cause all the body is a hitting area just like a real duel!!!

  • who thinks circular pistes are a bad idea, i mean WTF? straight pistes are meant to simulate fighting in castle corridors, what the HELL does a round piste simulate

  • I would disagree that you can't attack and defend at the same time on the narrow piste, the time thrust is very effective on the narrow piste.

There have been some moves to look at a cicular piste after the conversion to wireless fencing.

I doubt that Spanish methodology would hold up when put to the test but it would be fun to watch.

  • @2:32-2:37*thinks to himself*

    Ugh..wooooaaah! that was rad~

  • Damn they fence like bitches.

  • damn epee fencers are tall, think I'll stick with my sabre

  • jeez there so undecissive lol =P

  • Actually, it's an attempt to fake the opponent into bad moves

  • @Highskoolflunky1

that's why they're so good at fencing epee.

  • What does the red dot mean?

  • Either loser or nothing done

  • Red and green lights mean a hit from that side, a white light means off-target. Depending on which weapon is being used (there are 3), points are then awarded.

  • stupid TV..... идиотское телевидение.... наоборот все ))) ха ха ха -читайте имена на спине - read the marks on the backs

  • Wowow, there's many experts here... Pavel Kolobkov (the best epee fencer I've ever seen) is of course the guy on the left, recognizable by his uniquely cool fencing style and his enormous calves. For those who can't read or get puzzled by stupid wrong TV: I met him about 10 times, so just believe me...

  • Kolobkov is a very good fencer... but it seems a stretch to call him the best ever

  • Comment removed

  • until I see your culo fencing on the international level, as your attorney I advise you to stfu.

  • that's KOLOBKOV, 5 time world champion, winner of sydney olympics individual epee, he's been fencing as long as you've been alive.

i'm pretty sure if he needed to bend his knee's more he would!

  • the fencer on right is Verwulen or what ever it is, cant you read the fucking name tag on hes back ?

  • the points are shown opposite -_-

  • sorry, thats what confused me. i assumed that the back close up shots were from the other side of the piste.

  • u are forgiven. : >

  • At 0:54, lightning fast reflexes!! A necessity in epee

  • is it just me or did they have more flexide epees back then?

  • its wonderful

  • Not very well prepared attacks by Bas, but there's no reason why he still can't win the match.

  • jesus, they're so tall!

  • because the its backwards on the TV broadcast

  • Well that helps, specially if your a young fencer

But strategy and patience really makes up the game

    And timing, can't forget that

  • epee=waiting alot

    that is, if you're good

  • whoops Kolobkov v Dutch guy whose name eludes me/can't spell

  • Who vs who?

  • I think it's kolobkov (left) vs the Hungarian fellow whose name eludes me

  • wasn't it the Netherlands?

  • If you want to see mroe great fencing vids,

    google: ivlcoach

I collected a bunch of Beijing bouts, all absolutely great!

  • Haha it's only epee. watch foil

  • epee is by far the best fo fence =]

  • no

  • cXillion, u shouldnt of said that, fencing is the best sport ever!!!!!!

  • i agree

  • exactly!

  • Just to respond to raeden and hercules...

You can't dive in epee, so no, you couldn't do that...

  • Actually, you CAN dive in epee. But don't ask me any questions, I have absolutly no idea of how to anser them in english.

  • its a flesche you can dive.

  • Intense

  • people are so ignorants when they look at this they said its no thing they donot know fencing have a big reflex and alot of things go ask abot it

  • raedan, is there any rule that says u can't do that in epee??

  • turgay arkadsıma eskrım sporunda basarılar dılıyorum

  • It strikes me that if the fellow on the left was willing to close the distance, he'd win a lot sooner. Eh? Neh?

  • timing is everything

  • whats the name in english of that weapon used in fencing to strike with the blade not only the top

  • It's called a sabre, numbnuts

  • And therein lies the rub...

  • people are so ignorants when they look at this they said its fake and its slow pace...wow..this is not a MOVIE!!!

  • In the words of ali g r-e-s-t-e-t-p-a: how are we ever going to get along if we don't restetpa each other? think about it!

  • Who needs God when we have Pavel Kolobkov! Is part 3 on youtube anywhere?

  • too bad you couldn't like make up your own moves and do like a dive onto the floor and then thrust upwards into his stomach.

  • in epee fencing, there is nothing stopping you other than how practical it is to do so.

  • Funny comment westhog! Obviously some people have no sense of humor...

  • this isn't a real sword fight. if it was they would fight on at least one stair case , jump off at least one balcony, break at least one large expensive glass object, throw bar stools at each other, fight with an object other than a sword for at least ten seconds, fight on tables tops, and attempt to save or kidnap a hot chick all of which takes place in the midst of a massive drunken brawl.

    that's a sword fight

  • no, that's a movie, smarts. This is fencing. If it was a real sword fight they wouldn't be wearing their equipment, they'd be using real swords, and one of them would end up dead. Stop watching movies and spend some time in the real world, all right?

  • madness! next you'll say professional wrestling and godzilla are fake.

  • all right, point taken. Sorry.

  • ...lighten up alright? jeez, not every1 is as serious as u.....

  • The epee is the only real weapon that is still used. its first generation was used for dueling. the sabre was a cavalry sword so that makes no sense in why we would fence with it. foil im not sure when it originated but i know that it wasnt made to duel. so epee is the closest thing to a real duel you can get since the original rules were "first blood" thats why it has the least amount of rules.

  • The foil originated from the rapier. As for fencing, while it is somewhat like a "real" swordfight would have been, it isn't, really. The limitations on where you can hit, the extremly flexible and light swords, etc. make it extremely different.

  • It really depends on what you mean by a swordfight. The epee was a real dueling sword, made realistic once duels to the death were outlawed, as duels were then fought to first blood. The epee evolved from the small sword, which evolved from the rapier.

The foil was mostly a training weapon for the small sword, and was not really considered a real weapon, for the most part.

  • Ha! I could tell the fencer on the left was Kolobkov just by how he moved on the strip. I can't believe he is STILL at that level.

  • lol, you are an epeeist and you think we fence to recreate stuff? Man, you're thinking of SCA, or youre just being a jackass :p

Why would you move sideways? Its a thrust weapon. See their stance? How fast and controlled they are when they move forward/backward? Well, sideways would be a bother.

  • Moving sideways (circling) is very useful. It allows for different windings and angles of attack. With proper binding one can attack and defend at the same time. The narrow piste limits the effectiveness of these techniques. The Spanish style of rapier was extensively based on circular footwork with little to no lunging.

  • Do you think that circular-based school would have a good chance against the modern French or Italian schools of fencing? Itd be interesting to see, but.. I doubt anyone wants to test it with real weapons lol

  • On a circular piste with rapiers the Spanish system is as good as French or Italian systems. On a straight piste the effectiveness is greatly reduced. I suspect that the system would work better in epee than foil, but I've never tried it before (my rapier training has been primarily in the Italian system so I know only the basics of the Spanish system). Maybe I'll try it out at my next eppe tournament.

  • just look at theese movements..

  • epee is the most fun type of fencing!!! you actually duel instead of just runnig into eaach other

  • @Soldier500 really? not mean to be questioning, but im new to fencing, i thought sabre is like actual dueling, and foil is just thrusting, how do epee work?

  • @poirotellerylane epee has less rules and procedure than saber and foil. there are no rules on strikes and the you dont need to worry about order.

  • @poirotellerylane My understanding of it: epee is a sporting extension of duelling, as boxing is to brawling. The foil and the epee are very similar in concept, they are both thrusting weapons. The foil however was developed as a learning weapon, and practicing the foil was meant to be a way to learn how to stay alive if and when you ever had to partake in a real duel using the duelling epee.

  • bas is me friends!!

    I love you bas!!!

    kiss

    bye...

  • Why dont fencing include any sideways movement? Why are opponents restricted to just forward, backwards movements?

  • You do move backwards. I don't know anything about epee, but for sabre it's retreating which you can use to your advantage. I'm a fan of the stop cuts. Moving sideways isn't unnecessary. There is one sorta sideways move in sabre, but i'm not good at it. Plus, you'd get all tangled in the cord.

  • You can move sideways, the best fencers often will to surprise their opponent. A counterattack and "flatten out" may look terrible but it it gets you the touch... who cares?

  • it just confuses things, in order to show as little target area as posible to the opponent you fence side on and so sideways movement put you off balance so in the end its better this way.

  • I'm pretty sure the reason why there is such limited sideways movement is because in the enguard position, one is very balanced when moving forwards and backwards, and not so much sideways. Fencing just evolved in such a way that sideways movement is for the most part unpractical. Hence the narrow strips.

  • traditional ( back in the times when fencing was used as a death duel) fencers would bout in narrow hallways or narrow streets... the reason we fence on strips now and days is to recreate this for tradition's sake.... yes i am an epeeist

  • safety first. If you managed to get behind your opponent, you could kill them. The back of the head is one of the only unexposed parts of the body.

  • Give me Foil over Epee any day it limit your target area but it's way more interesting than trying to stab your opponent in the foot.

  • But not as interesting as trying to stab them on the hand!

I do like foil, though, just epee's my favorite!

  • Although stabbing people in the foot is kinda fun to do. I'd take that any day over always hitting the body.

  • Personally, I like the top of the arm. Especially if your opponent is shorter than you are, if they extend it's fun to just tap them on the top of the arm just above the wrist. But the top (and bottom) of the feet are fun too. ;)

  • they don;t need to be, just they get a yellow card if they try to block with a hand.

  • because if ur hand is behind ur back it puts you WAY off balance

  • yup

  • not only does it put u off balance, but it leaves ur chest area more open which makes it easier for the other guy to score the touch

  • i agree

  • its not neccessary for them to do that as long as their hands are not in the way

  • dude, its just not necessary. these guys are world class so they've got super good balance.

  • doesnt through you off balance whatsoever, keeping your hand behind your back is fine, and as far as epee goes when you attack, you hit so losing your balance shouldnt be such a big deal.

  • Their both incredibly good fencers, but in this match verwijlen was just screwing about. Kolobkov was way better. I wish I'd done this well against verwijlen when I fenced him:P ah well, 5-2 isn't that bad:p

  • my coach beat kolobkov! back in the day :)

  • They're both incredible fencers...i like!

  • ya they are very relaxed

  • very nice!!! HI five!

  • Verwijle!!!

  • Koblecovs counter atacks are awsome

  • Leipzig 2005 Fencing Mens Epee Semis Finals 2/3

    Club de Esgrima Temuco

  • Where's the rest, this was a D.E. fight wasn't it?

  • agreed. the hit at 3.40 is awesome. verwijlen comes trundling forward desperately trying to draw kolobkov's blade. kolobkov just waits and waits and then with lightning speed and perfect timing just floats through a counter. simply perfect.

  • Nothing especial. If you want to see something especial check out the Mangiarroti fencing videos I uploaded and check out Angelo Belloni fencing. Now! that is Amazing!

  • kolobkov is the man
