@Friendguystarcraft isn't real fencing? im sure if i had a REAL foil and was ACTUALLY fencing you and stabbed you in the face you would still die even though it wasn't on the torso. epee is more realistic
@beavermonlives only in this footage the light that goes off is for the hit the fencer the other side gains, possibly because its the side the audience are facing.
@ThePeckerwood310 In my opinion, epee by far! I started out with foil and now that i have been fencing epee for awhile i never even get my out foil equipment out because i love it so much. Epee is the most fun out of all three weapons because of the speed of the bouts and the rules; and also it lets you have your own style, more so than sabre or foil. Hope that helps!
@ThePeckerwood310 Well in sabre almost attacks happen within 20sec of the directer saying fence, so it is really really fast paced but its more stab stab oh i hit you good. Vs foil and epee you still have fast attacks and quick bouts (epee being the faster of those two) but with those weapons you really take more time to set things up and feel out your opponent. So sabre is the fastest but there is more luck, so long answer short when you take out luck i would say epee. :)
Epee is the best for guis like me, i'm kinda slow for foil and i don't like just to go and brake the blade on my oponent, you can think, find opens and its more real cause all the body is a hitting area just like a real duel!!!
who thinks circular pistes are a bad idea, i mean WTF? straight pistes are meant to simulate fighting in castle corridors, what the HELL does a round piste simulate
Red and green lights mean a hit from that side, a white light means off-target. Depending on which weapon is being used (there are 3), points are then awarded.
Wowow, there's many experts here... Pavel Kolobkov (the best epee fencer I've ever seen) is of course the guy on the left, recognizable by his uniquely cool fencing style and his enormous calves. For those who can't read or get puzzled by stupid wrong TV: I met him about 10 times, so just believe me...
this isn't a real sword fight. if it was they would fight on at least one stair case , jump off at least one balcony, break at least one large expensive glass object, throw bar stools at each other, fight with an object other than a sword for at least ten seconds, fight on tables tops, and attempt to save or kidnap a hot chick all of which takes place in the midst of a massive drunken brawl.
no, that's a movie, smarts. This is fencing. If it was a real sword fight they wouldn't be wearing their equipment, they'd be using real swords, and one of them would end up dead. Stop watching movies and spend some time in the real world, all right?
this isn't a real sword fight. if it was they would fight on at least one stair case , jump off at least one balcony, break at least one large expensive glass object, throw bar stools at each other, fight with an object other than a sword for at least ten seconds, fight on tables tops, and attempt to save or kidnap a hot chick all of which takes place in the midst of a massive drunken brawl.
The epee is the only real weapon that is still used. its first generation was used for dueling. the sabre was a cavalry sword so that makes no sense in why we would fence with it. foil im not sure when it originated but i know that it wasnt made to duel. so epee is the closest thing to a real duel you can get since the original rules were "first blood" thats why it has the least amount of rules.
The foil originated from the rapier. As for fencing, while it is somewhat like a "real" swordfight would have been, it isn't, really. The limitations on where you can hit, the extremly flexible and light swords, etc. make it extremely different.
It really depends on what you mean by a swordfight. The epee was a real dueling sword, made realistic once duels to the death were outlawed, as duels were then fought to first blood. The epee evolved from the small sword, which evolved from the rapier.
The foil was mostly a training weapon for the small sword, and was not really considered a real weapon, for the most part.
lol, you are an epeeist and you think we fence to recreate stuff? Man, you're thinking of SCA, or youre just being a jackass :p
Why would you move sideways? Its a thrust weapon. See their stance? How fast and controlled they are when they move forward/backward? Well, sideways would be a bother.
Moving sideways (circling) is very useful. It allows for different windings and angles of attack. With proper binding one can attack and defend at the same time. The narrow piste limits the effectiveness of these techniques. The Spanish style of rapier was extensively based on circular footwork with little to no lunging.
Do you think that circular-based school would have a good chance against the modern French or Italian schools of fencing? Itd be interesting to see, but.. I doubt anyone wants to test it with real weapons lol
On a circular piste with rapiers the Spanish system is as good as French or Italian systems. On a straight piste the effectiveness is greatly reduced. I suspect that the system would work better in epee than foil, but I've never tried it before (my rapier training has been primarily in the Italian system so I know only the basics of the Spanish system). Maybe I'll try it out at my next eppe tournament.
@Soldier500 really? not mean to be questioning, but im new to fencing, i thought sabre is like actual dueling, and foil is just thrusting, how do epee work?
@poirotellerylane My understanding of it: epee is a sporting extension of duelling, as boxing is to brawling. The foil and the epee are very similar in concept, they are both thrusting weapons. The foil however was developed as a learning weapon, and practicing the foil was meant to be a way to learn how to stay alive if and when you ever had to partake in a real duel using the duelling epee.
You do move backwards. I don't know anything about epee, but for sabre it's retreating which you can use to your advantage. I'm a fan of the stop cuts. Moving sideways isn't unnecessary. There is one sorta sideways move in sabre, but i'm not good at it. Plus, you'd get all tangled in the cord.
You can move sideways, the best fencers often will to surprise their opponent. A counterattack and "flatten out" may look terrible but it it gets you the touch... who cares?
it just confuses things, in order to show as little target area as posible to the opponent you fence side on and so sideways movement put you off balance so in the end its better this way.
I'm pretty sure the reason why there is such limited sideways movement is because in the enguard position, one is very balanced when moving forwards and backwards, and not so much sideways. Fencing just evolved in such a way that sideways movement is for the most part unpractical. Hence the narrow strips.
traditional ( back in the times when fencing was used as a death duel) fencers would bout in narrow hallways or narrow streets... the reason we fence on strips now and days is to recreate this for tradition's sake.... yes i am an epeeist
Personally, I like the top of the arm. Especially if your opponent is shorter than you are, if they extend it's fun to just tap them on the top of the arm just above the wrist. But the top (and bottom) of the feet are fun too. ;)

I would disagree that you can't attack and defend at the same time on the narrow piste, the time thrust is very effective on the narrow piste.
There have been some moves to look at a cicular piste after the conversion to wireless fencing.
I doubt that Spanish methodology would hold up when put to the test but it would be fun to watch.
