I like the message, I like the presentation. However, i find the the totality of the video to be very vague. What kind of censorship is going on? Are campuses actually censoring debates over modern issues? Is this just a theory derived from a more subtle censorship? Some explanation is neccesary, some details.

Debate allows individuals to see the reasons behind the beliefs they profess. I agree with what Mr Lukianoff says about debate forcing people to come to a deeper understanding of the beliefs they hold. Colleges and universities provide a forum for individuals to come together. Many colleges today have rules that prohibit freedom of speech. It seems ironic that the philosophers we hold in high regard began in universities and colleges where they challenged “normal” ideas.
We seriously overestimate the freedoms that we do have here. We are all being hearded, recieving targeted messages and falling into doing what we are told we are supposed to do. We buy the foods that are advertized, we don't fight GMOs the way we should. We accept the use of petroleum as a part of our daily lives we have no choice about, we allow big business to run our government, and then we get angry that things don't change, when we aren't putting in the effort to fight them.
Saw a comment that said "We have no 1st amendment anymore. Not on campus, not in the US, and certainly not anywhere else." What kind of bogus statement is that? Go outside of the country to anywhere else in the world and you will see that you seriously underestimate what liberties we have here.
This is the problem with so-called 'hate speech' legislation. You cannot legislate how or what people think. People are intimidated on campus by the threat of being labled a bigot, racist or homophobic because they speak out against illegal immigation or same-sex marriage. Christian clubs are being banned from college campuses because of our beiefs, yet Hindu, Muslum, Budhist and every other worls religion is encouraged.
@joepat191 Please do not put all Christians in the same boat. I am Christian and I fully support gay marriage as it is a constitutional right. I also do not feel as if my rights are being stepped upon by "other religions." There are more Christians in America than any other religion, and I feel as if it is actually the other religions that are not supported.
@valthecancangal I was talking about Christian Clubs on college campuses, but if you feel you still have rights try putting a cross or crucifix in your work cubicle; wear a cross on your lapel; or 'Jesus is the Reason for the Season' button at Christmas time (oops, I mean the 'holiday season'). Our rights are being stepped on by governent regulations or college rules (not other religions) because someone "feels" offended when we speak out against popular ideas that scripture does not support.
@joepat191 I feel as if you may be taking things too far. Christians still have the right t do whatever they want, wear what they want, say what they want. Society as a whole is embracing all religions and now instead of perhaps stepping on the toes of other religions, society is letting everybody express their beliefs. Though I do not agree with other religions, I believe this is good for our society as it promotes cultural enrichment as well as fair treatment.
@valthecancangal That's the point! I'm not the one taking things too far - government, companies and colleges all have regulations and policies preventing what I mentioned earlier. We cannot say what we want or wear what we want at work or on campus. Companies are so afraid of being sued because someone is offended that they go overboard and trample on 1st ammendment rights in the name of tolerance. Also - I have NEVER said other religions do not have the right to worship as they wish.
This issue in my observation is both a trend of a real problem, and a symptom of a larger threat. It is a problem in itself where a person is denied the 1st amendment, the freedom to speak. The future lies with the students of today, how will we be able to make a difference in the world of tomorrow; if we are continually being shut don’t for the things we believe in today?
@2Side2Side2 where do you suppose it comes from? Majority of their profit is from cannabis, where there's a demand there is a supply. Do some research
Safeguarding, okay, but freedom of speech should be upheld to everyone to say ANYTHING without recourse. It's just like turning on the t.v. or searching the web for porn! If you don't like the what they are saying don't listen, turn the channel or block your computer! OR use the right to freedom of speech and debate/counterpoint what is being said!
Honestly, I'd rather hear something stupid, absurd and out dated than get punched in the face or shot by someone's psychotic break!
I feel that if oeopl do not speak up as far as the violation of the first amendment they will forever never have a voice. the colleges and universities are continualy raising tuition fees making it harder and harder for most students that are interested in continuing thier education absolutly imposible to be done. eveyone should utilize their first amendment rights, and if it makes college executives upset then so be it.
I do believe that campuses should encourage students to speak up about what they believe is wrong in society. If not, how are we supposed to let the world evolve in (hopefully) a beneficial way. I attempted to place signs attracting attention to the growing violence on our nations border and how the removal of the cartels main source of income (cannabis) would greatly hinder the progress of organized crime. let me know what you think...
this is the problem that society has today. We have many people tossing rights around like a rag doll. Take the recent threats in Florida when the pastor was going to burn korans. Now yes, he was legally safe to do what he planned. But theres an old saying, you dont shout fire in a crowded theater. The use of your rights to attract negative attention upon yourself is just stupid. The sad thing is that institutions must safe guard against things like this.
Freedom of Speech in school is only subjective to the teachers, students can say and do anything so long as it is appropriate for example a student promoting illegal drug use could be punished. So students can debate and use critical thinking, just so long as it is school appropriate.
I agree with this and mostly with the notion of looking at freedom of speech as a moral concept. I think a lot of people take this for granted thinking that freedom of speech is the freedom to say whatever pops up in your head. We should teach students to think, not only critically, but responsibly. Be responsible for the words you say.
@831animelove So what youre saying is that its okay to say whatever youre thinking? So if youre at your job and you think youre boss is a prick so you tell him, he doesnt have the right to fire you?
Absolutely true. Critical thinking should be taught at all ages and reinforced in any high school and college application of learning. Critical thinking teaches not only how to think but why, where, when and reminds the student who is really doing the thinking for them. Is it the student or others? Propaganda rules. We need to be taught to think not site what others think. Freedom of speech not only teaches critical thinking but helps the mind to sort the difference between thought and speech.

@cheesylovesong23 probably because this is youtube, and most comments that are removed generally deserve to be removed.
