  • Stephen King on trumpet!

  • That drummer... HAS THE SICKEST HAIR EVER!!!!!

  • Jazz musicians have always been about what happens between their ears, not so much their eyes. Tom Harrell is schizophrenic - he stands in one place and blows music from the heavens. Art Tatum was blind and his eyes rolled when he played. And on and on and on. Jazz is for the ears, not the eyes. You want eyes? Watch "dance" music and top 40. Cause G-d knows, there's not much to LISTEN to in it these days! ; )

  • I want to call @xMarth a retard but his comment his 3 years old :(

  • Nice player but he has no stage presence at all: he looks like a high school science teacher and is always hunched over peering into a music stand even on charts which even alzheimers sufferers know from memory.

  • @awreckingball shut the fuck up, he'll rape and blow the science out those stupid teachers lifes! Stage presence doesnt matter when you can fuckin play like that. you think anyone complained about Steven Hawkings stage presence??

  • @suazobomber Erm Stephen Hawking is a physicist not a performer, and I'm pretty sure he's memorized such basics as the periodic table and doesn't require a prompt sheet! But it's interesting that you compare a static wheelchair-bound scientist with Wayne. They are remarkably similar in terms of stage presence!

  • @awreckingball stage presence is not important. whats important is talent and playing ability. And how does he look like a science teacher???

  • he came to my band's jazz concert & performed, i got to shake his hand & get an autograph, but he is truly an amazing trumpet player

  • I AM SEEING WAYNE IN CONCERT SOON!!!!!!!

  • go wayne he is the worlds best trumpet player :D

  • The only thing more smokin than Wayne is Bernie, the Bugatti engine of drummers.

  • É muito interessante a forma como este trompetista toca. Seus sons agudos são bem precisos.

  • Drummer looks like Bernie from the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

  • @ahz123 that IS bernie dresel from the brian setzer orchestra lol

  • Simply put, I'm gonna play like THAT!

    Waynard is the man...

  • wayne is insane

  • To anyone who's bagging one this guy, he's one of the the first call studio players in LA for a reason...

  • wayne has amazing chops but holy crap he is a boring soloist

  • @penutbito Are you kidding me, his soloing is great, not just because of his chops but he knows how to play jazz.

  • @selector111 he knows what he's doing for sure, but to get a feel for improvisation you should be listening to people like clark terry, freddie hubbard or nicholas payton. Or for really exciting, powerful soloists look to jesse mcguire or... that dude from big bad voodoo daddy:) oh and have you heard waynes classical playing? his picc stuff? hes way good at that

  • @penutbito True, where would I hear some of his classical playing, has he released anything or is it just in the studio or on youtube, and for soloing I agree guys like Clark Terry and Freddie Hubbard would be better if you want to get a better look at improv, but that is the main thing they do/did, Wayne's main thing is lead or studio playing, I only said that because I think he is not boring at all and I felt you were trying to put him down.

  • im in a middle school jazz band and i just played with him in a rehearsal and im playing a big concert tomorrow!! people are paying 25 bucks to see me! thats how i think of it lol

  • Love me some Horn of Puente!

  • Wayne is amazing..no doubt..but..Bobby Shew is the master!!!..a true jazz soloist!!! and lead player!!! and I think Wayne would agree...although Wayne is an exciting soloist!!so trying to say one thing or another is usless...just enjoy what he is giving you!!!!

  • What?? There is no dogging Wayne! This will not be tolerated. I'm glad he doesn't play piano....maybe he does. Jeez I hope not.

  • he went to high school with weird al

  • ehh...wayne bergeron is a sick Lead player...Ive seen and opened for the GGBPB and they r just INCREDIBLE!!!!...............and not to mention the guys are totally cool... .....................buuut i do have to say wayne is a sick lead player, but not a great soloist.....written ya...but improv...just not there yet w/ his licks and ideas.....i

  • for those who dont know....wayne stopped playing trumpet from 18 - 24.... he said he had great range in high school, loved music, but never persued it.....then one day just locked himself in a room for a year and worked on his skills again....and here he is... nothing like hand first stories from the great..... i hope to follow a similar path.

  • I went to school with Wayne. Him and a guy named Bill Rhodes were two of a kind. Wayne did something with himself while Bill became some sorta of a hermit living in the Montana Mountians.

Keep up the good work Wayne

  • lol locking urself in ur room for a year playing the trumpet, what a nice path 2 follow ;p

  • I have to disagree, I think he is amazing, soloing and all even in improvisation, esp when you look at 1:20 and 1:30 and especially 2:00, some times he played something that was dissonant but he came back and play some catchy stuff that he made up, he can definately improv better than most people, and I had no idea he ever put it down for as good as he is and for who he has played with

  • He might not be Jack Sheldon or Carl Saunders on the ballads and improv, but he's damn good, I enjoy his soloing and coupled with his planet-sized chops what the heck else do you want man? Sheesh. Everyone has to find something negative, don't they. Did you try teaching him some "licks"? ;-)

  • Well said...when people feel insecure about themselves, they have to go find something bad about good people. Sometimes those people reveal their stupidity by trying to say stuff about the truly great players like Wayne.

  • where's the music?

  • Just saw Wayne Last night with the UNC Lab I band in Colorado, fkin incredible! Hung out with him at the bar, really cool dude.

  • same here, Birdland was the best sone, right before the intermission.

  • Wayne is deadly accurate in tone much like Maynard. He has a groove too. Nice to listen to.

  • Haha... Arturo lick at 1:20.

  • I saw wayne live and o my god, his sound is gorgeous!!!

  • i met him! he came and did a show at our school and player with our jazz band too! our lead trumpet player got to play right alongside him! he's a cool guy, rather quirky.

  • I played with him :P

    I was the drummer! :D

  • wasn't it awesome? he's such cool guy. really nice and funny!

  • Yeah lol, he is a funny guy

  • Anyone who lives in colorado should see this guy play a maynard tribute concert at UNC in Greeley this semester

  • for sure. He came into our clinic room after our jazz one performed... I was playing lead on high maintenence and that was super intimidating but awesome!

  • lol im gonna add, look at the drummer at :40. he looks so funny hahaha

  • bernie dresel has every right to look funny. he's not human.

  • this guy is a monster wow

  • i got to see him live for free. it was awesome. he played with all the famous players around pittsburgh. he is a beast and is very very accurate. i got to speak to him after, hes nice and just hilarious. See him live if you can!

  • i did i saw him at mineral area college a while back and it was amazing!!! he also came and did a clinic with my high school jazz band. it was awesome

  • We can always find someone who's better - no one said he was the best, but he's a very good trumpet player - good enough to be a profesional.

  • I will be seeing wayne at the palace on the 31st. If anyone is in the manchester area around def. check out the big phat band and the compaq big band!! I gave wayne a ride to his hotel lest year when they came...it was like have jesus in the car

  • Personally, I like the solo he does on this song better on the album XXL. My teacher got me a play-along book and every time I read along with it, my eyes bug out. It's amazing.

  • Ace player without a shadow of a doubt. I'll be seeing him on 31st May when he plays with Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band at the Palace Theatre in Manchester NH. Can't wait!

  • I played with Bergeron last night. HE IS A BEAST!

  • Wayne Bergeron was at my high school today

  • bernie dresel and wayne bergeron look soo alike its weird but cool.

  • lol they do!

  • lolz. the drummer's hair is funny as hell.nice vid man.

  • I believe that's the same drummer as in the Brian Setzer Orchestra...

  • yeah it is, for some of the albums

  • Haha your guys' comments make me wonder, what a B# key signature would look like. I myself have never seen an X in the key signature, in 4 years of 6 years of big band playin'

  • I took a theory class and didn't hear about a B# major key.

  • ...Because a B# major is a C major.

Unless you wanna make like difficult as shit and actually write what a B# would look like.

  • B# is not the same as C but it is. It's Tertial Structure :) If a song is written in G, you don't right Gb and G you right F# and G. If a piece has B# you don't play C you play B# because there is a C double sharp in the key sig :) but it is the same as C, but not really.

    *wink*

  • @xMarth Not to be a dick, but in the English language it is "write". Couldn't let that go, sorry.

  • @jazzvine a song is write in G? ...or am I not understanding what you're talking about...that post was two years ago haha.

  • @xMarth *head explodes*

  • @xMarth i saw this first sentence and almost hung myself... but then i read the rest

  • yes, B# sounds the same as C, and X is the sign for a "double sharp," or 1 wholestep above the natural pitch.

The B# scale looks like this:

B# CX DX E# FX GX AX B#

making a B# major chord: B# DX FX

    a B# minor chord: B# D# FX,

    a perfect 4th: B# E#

    a B# tri-tone: B# G# GX (I think, cuz i'm not sure what a "triple sharp" looks like)

The only time you would really run into stuff like this is when a "contemporary" composer wants to be a dick, or if you're doing some weird transpositions.

  • dude bro.......does wayne swing or what???? god, what a handsome man, wearing his classy red shirt under his suit jacket. What a real man. Forget johnny cash.

  • not only is wayne beautifull, he is also playing right field if you know what i mean. : ) I saw him in a night club in havana, wearing black leather pants, and nothing else but a bow tie. He has got some moves, let me tell you. He marched around playing high notes with the DJ and sweating more than a pig could sweat!!! Spanking his ass the whole way.

  • Damn!! Maynard taught hime very well!!

  • the drummer looks just like skinny wayne lol

  • this is awesome! you guys need to listen to Maynard and Waynard! It was the last recording Maynard did and they were amazing!

  • i had the pleasure of opening for gordon goodwin and i must say, wayne bergeron is absolutely amazing...he stopped playing after his first year in college....didnt start playing seriously again until he was like 24 or 25 then just locked himself in his room for a year and practiced alllll day........unreal

  • The greatest! Awesome playing

  • He's got such a thick sound all the time. Unreal.

  • Wayne is sick nasty... he did a great master class at the ITG last year and I think he's doing another one at this year's.

  • Wayne is the guest at this yearsa "trumpetparty" (google now!!!)

  • that is teh hawt s3x. last year i playd that solo part for my jazz band. it is sweet. i also got to meet that guy last year. he's awesome

  • Gordon Goodwins Big Phat Band, celebrates and personifies the best of the big band tradition with a very contemporary and original sound. Through the writing genius of Gordon Goodwin, SRO audiences have enjoyed one of the most craftsman-like hard swinging large jazz ensembles comprised of L.A.s finest musicians. Gordons witty and insightful arrangements propel the listener on a journey through a myriad of styles: latin, blues, swing, classical, hard-hitting jazz. With two Grammy nominated albums.

  • did copy that off their website

  • yea

  • Sadly to say even though I am amused with this video and reading it's comments provided by countless musicians or just random people who love criticizing. I have to hand it to you, plagerizing is against copyright law Curtis! *source your location from the website next time*

  • still.......its just not hard enough. (thats what she said)

  • Thought I recognised that drummer- Bernie Dresel who moved on to play with Brian Stezer (or this may be after) ... complete bad ass...

  • Bernie still plays for both, the BSO and the BPB. And yes...he is a great drummer!

  • i've met wayne bergeron before and ohh my god, he is so freaking good it's crazy. he can pretty much play anything by any trumpet player that ever lived. even if he's never learn a certain song he can fake his way through it and be about 90% correct. he's deffinataly one of the best trumpet players of our day.

  • ey jobjob....blablabla........

maybe you just play a solo like this and get it on to youtube...........

wayne is one of the most outstanding players alive, and i guess that you are just jealus becouse he plays feaky stuff like that, and you are not able to play a major scale.........and you said "high notes are easy"........so maybe just go ahead and take a battle against roger ingram, wayne, eric miyashiro or patrick hession........let' see how easy their high notes are for you

  • Jazz hasn't changed...wow...what planet are you on? No wonder I don't read this stuff regularly! By the way, when I said I thought Arturo, Vizzutti, and Wayne were the best all-around players...for on thing...it's an OPINION...not gospel! Secondly, obviously I love MF and DOC, too. There are players you never see that are amazing...Ever listen to Carl Saunders? How about Arnie Chycoski...Mc McConnel's lead player. So many great cats out there.

  • Arnie Chycoski, for me is one of the best lead players that have ever lived. for his genre anyway.

  • Community College kid criticizing Waynard...OK! You should have seen Wayne at the Maynard Ferguson Tribute in St. Louis...He was amazing! Of course he's awesome with Gordon as well...and those charts are not joke. I've played all over the world, too, but Wayne is the pro's pro. Arturo, Vizzutti, Wayne...The big 3 when it comes to all-around trumpet players.

  • james morrison as well

  • Wow someone has heard of James Morrison that isn't Australian. Go to some of my favourited videos and the Berghausen (spelling?) one is very very good.

  • I've heard of him too. Im not australian. besides being a killer brass player, he can blow a mean alto too.

  • what about Wynton?

  • i transcribed this guys solo just now and he's not doing anything hard. Big deal, we can all use a major scale...maybe if he was using some hard scales he might sound like a trumpet player playing hard stuff. Just not hard enough scales, and high notes are easy.

  • ahhaha you 'transcribed' his solo. you can see which valves hes pressing and therefore which notes hes hitting, meaning you didnt transcribe anything.

  • the only thing that matters is how it sounds, and I think Wayne sounded great! You know, if you analyze some of Miles Davis' solos, they really aren't that hard but it was his creativity and genius that made those few notes into the most beautiful melodies anyone has ever heard.

  • ok, what scales would you have used?

  • so you would have used a basic major scale, with a little bit of chromaticism?...just like Mr. Bergeron did (at least thats what you claim he played).

  • there's no such thing as B# major..

  • uh..........yeah there is guys......Mr. Bergeron invented it. Do you guys know who jesus vega is? he's probably about the only person on this planet that knows anything about music. and it's still, just not hard enough scales. Man, you guys gotta change your attitude.

  • Uh, B# major? Are you kidding? I mean yeah theoretically I guess you could write a B# major scale, but it's a complete waste of time. Just write C major! A B# major scale would be B#, C##, D##, F##, G##, A##, B#, and that's stupid.

  • you forgot e#

  • he didnt invent that scale. he is just one of the first people to call it that moron.

  • wayne bergeron is a myth. The trumpet player you actually see in this video is "Rashawn Ross" a genius and pure soul bred in this corn fed american land. There is no such this as a scale.

  • i agree with commakozzi, theoretically one can mention B# Major scale, but putting it in practice is just making things more difficult, and that is nonsense...that is the reason why when playing one says C major and not B# Major or Dbb major, that would be just ridiculous...and you're talking about playing, not composing, so it reaffirms automatically what i'm saying here

  • as much as you can have a c and d chromatic.... its just plain chromatic

  • yeah, but the thing with chromatic scales is that the tonic of choice depends on the note you're using as a "central tone", let's say. so, in theory, it's not the same to say chromatic d to saying chromatic c...but with b# it's not even that, it's just nonesense because b# and c are the same note...

  • you forgot e#

  • he's all over the place in this recording

  • well they do big band jazz and latin, how different can you expect them to be?

samba del gringo, the jazz police, all those ones. theyre amazing. not too much better nowadays.

  • too close for comfort and horn of puente are great charts. But some big bands are so much more creative whilst staying within the style

  • like who out of example?

i'm not saying youre wrong, im just not a big band expert.. suggest some?

  • see my comments two below - the wayne bergeron big band is great (listen to his myspace - friend like me and maynard and waynard are great) and the english national youth jazz orchestra is the most original big band I know. Don't be put off by the word youth - the standard is amazing, most of the guys are around 20. Amy Winehouse used to sing with them - she was unbelievable. But they're not nearly as well recorded as these guys.

  • Google stanza music never the twain and the first on the list is a sample of nyjo playing it - terrible sound quality but a great chart

  • Wayne! I met him in person and we talked and everything. He's a nice guy. : )

  • I think that the Big Phat Band is amazing in their precision, I really think they lack a lot in terms of originality and creativity. This band has a lot going for it with it's big name lead players and extensive arrangements, but I never have had any real affinity toward the music. The rhythm section doesn't interact, the soloists are mostly just showing off their chops, and the arrangements sound like big band elevator music.

  • originality??!?!?!?!?!? have you heard hunting wabbits?? and, how is this not creative? i will admit some songs sound like elevator music. but seriously

come on. they are one of the most creative groups there are!

  • hunting wabbits is a sick tune, no doubt

  • I love the big phat band but I have to admit that after you've 5 or 6 or Goodwin's charts you start to feel as though you've heard them all. In terms of precision they're the best in the world but I prefer the charts of the wayne bergeron band and also the English National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Those guys are sick!

  • Gotcha... The actual arranging/composing is definitely very under par for that musicianship level. But, it's the west coast and, thats how it goes I guess.

  • who's arranging/composing? gordon goodwin's?

  • Whoever arranged/composed this tune.

  • how many tunes have you arranged or composed? I don't think you have any room to criticize Gordon Goodwin seeing as you play in a community college jazz band.

  • I can criticize anyone I damn well want to cause thats part of life. Also, I make a living playing music with two bands steady, other then HFCC's group. I play with that group cause it gives me a good chance to do some big band lead playing and also to travel. We've been to Hawaii, France, Spain, Switzerland, St. Thomas, NYC, and in July of next year we're headed to Paris, the Jazz A Vienne festival and the French Riviera.

  • Those are probably the 2 worst words to describe them. That's what they strive for. They don't wanna be like any other Jazz Big Band/aritst. They are opening up in to new music boundries that jazz never dares to do. That's why jazz is so looked down upon, its been the same forever. It's time for jazz to change along with the rest of the world. Just as all the music genres have.

  • what 2 words?

  • Obviously you've never listened to the Mingus Big Band or the Maria Schneider Orchestra. Jazz dares everything.. it has no boundries, thats what makes jazz what it is. And who said jazz was looked down upon?? Why would you say something like that??

  • It's too bad you think that fun, uplifting melodies aren't REAL jazz. If u want to talk old school "real no boundries jazz" check out the American Songbook where jazz got it's start. All the original bebop masters worked off happy little showbiz tunes. I don't think the format of Intro, head, solos, development, shout chorus was invented by Goodwin. I guess we should go back and tell Ellington, Basie, Thad and Mel they were using a boring, "elevator music" format too.

  • People who are successful are always the ones who write what they feel. If you feel dark then by all means dig into Ornett Coleman and Monk, but the good thing about jazz is it is supposed to be a celebration of what comes from the heart. It's too bad you feel the need to cut down a person's positve contribution to keep jazz alive and share their love of jazz music with the world. If you don't like it, don't listen but don't try to make it less just to make yourself feel like more.

  • Are you Kidding? Jazz has changed a redculous ammount -Almost to the point where its not really jazz anymore. Listen to some old Louis or Fletcheer Henderson band. then listen to Maria Schneider or Ornette Coleman and tell me it sounds the same. Jazz isn't looked down upon either. It's been around longer than any other music because it's always changing. It takes balls and a lack of Ears to say that its always been the same.

  • lmao...

  • BIG BAND ELEVATOR MUSIC??!!! You're an idiot. Nothing about goodwin's music is "elevator music" at all. Goodwin is praised for his writing and arranging for good reason. Look into it.

  • Yo maddybug, chill...

I'm just saying there's jazz out there that does it for me much more than this group. I'm not trying to start a youtube war. I agree with a lot of what your saying, but personally I prefer other musicians and groups.

  • I know and i respect that. I actually wasnt really responding to you. I was directing the most of what i said to kenferry. sorry for the mix up

  • yeah wayne is a trumpet god but he needs some new licks and you can tell he is using the same stuff all the time.

  • This is partially because people expect a certain thing from the solo and he knows it. When you record a tune and then perform live part of the show is the known solo. But I agree on other tracks on a different CD he uses some of the same stuff, but he is probably the best living lead player regardless!

  • Wayne is a trumpet god.

  • The title of the tune is Horn of Puente. And I'm going to see these guys twice this week! :-D

  • i get to go to the camp they are putting on at cal state northridge

  • Name of the band is gordon goodwin not gordon gershwin.
