I still admire Mariah and think its great she can move with the times and current trends. Still, vocally and musically she was best from 1990-1998. It would be nice to see her do an album with her old collaborators like Walter Afanasieff and perhaps even David Morales. Babyface would be someone nice to collaborate with too. She shouldn't be afraid to ditch the hip off and just do a throwback pop/R&B like she did in the 90s.

my fav albums from mc are debut album, emotions, daydream ,butterfly, rainbow(despite the cover), teom(a tru gem) and e=mc2. although e=mc2 is nothing compared to some of the albums i mentioned.
Butterfly was really hip, but only a few points show some maturity in her voice. #1's made her out to be 2nd rate to Miss Houston, because the song they sang together merely focused on Whitney. By the time Rainbow and Glitter were released, she started to lose some of her strength and lower tones (which I think are totally HOTT!) Charmbracelet and Remixes are not worth mentioning. Emancipation was a R&B drowned out album which hid her true potential, while E=MC2 mixes vocals and beat just right.
well, i like TEOM because it's my kind of music, but E=MC2 is great. Charmbracelet is her worst album. There's no doubt that she lost vocal strength and power, but her overall range is still there, but her tone is huskier.
She had good range on her first CD. Emotions found her tightening her vocals and showing a bigger range. MTV Unplugged was nice, but didn't show much about her voice. Music Box was basically a MC version of a Whitney Houston soundtrack, but it's still REALLY GOOD. Daydream, I think, is when she had the best vocals. I mean, "One Sweet Day," "I Am Free," "Melt Away," and "Forever" are some of the best vocals she's ever done! (I need to continue on another comment:)

This was an incredible album, she showed even more of her range on Emotions and Music Box, Daydream or Butterfly is vocally her best album. By Rainbow and Glitter she kinda lost her mind, Charmbracelet was just bad, TEOM and E=MC2 are creative and very good albums.
Dont forget her speech when she won artist of the decade "forget the boobs, short skirts, big hair etc" she is still Mariah.

It's the tone of her voice, her range, the emotion and the way her voice can be so powerful yet subtle without ever sounding terrible that made us like her voice so much in the first place.
We all miss that, I hope one day, she will blow us all away again with another '#1' vocal power ballad.

But songs like this will always be special to me!

By the time Rainbow and Glitter were released, she started to lose some of her strength and lower tones (which I think are totally HOTT!) Charmbracelet and Remixes are not worth mentioning. Emancipation was a R&B drowned out album which hid her true potential, while E=MC2 mixes vocals and beat just right.

well, i like TEOM because it's my kind of music, but E=MC2 is great. Charmbracelet is her worst album. There's no doubt that she lost vocal strength and power, but her overall range is still there, but her tone is huskier.

She had good range on her first CD. Emotions found her tightening her vocals and showing a bigger range. MTV Unplugged was nice, but didn't show much about her voice. Music Box was basically a MC version of a Whitney Houston soundtrack, but it's still REALLY GOOD. Daydream, I think, is when she had the best vocals. I mean, "One Sweet Day," "I Am Free," "Melt Away," and "Forever" are some of the best vocals she's ever done! (I need to continue on another comment:)

Disagree crazy2hazy! This was a young girl thrown into the limelight! And did`nt she do well!!!! This song is my favourite song of her`s, Yes she was told what to do, But in my eyes she was at her best!!! This song is 20 years old now!!! how crazy is that!! I cannot believe someone has not tried to cover it!!! actualy I can! it`s because no-one can ever cover Mariah!! she is one off!!! no one will ever be able to match her in our life time!!!

i just don't think her voice was mature. I don't think it's fair to judge her based on how she sounds when she's this young. This was an incredible album, she showed even more of her range on Emotions and Music Box, Daydream or Butterfly is vocally her best album. By Rainbow and Glitter she kinda lost her mind, Charmbracelet was just bad, TEOM and E=MC2 are creative and very good albums.

Indeed, Mariah has changed, we all change.
Dont forget her speech when she won artist of the decade "forget the boobs, short skirts, big hair etc" she is still Mariah.
Her music has grown, otherwise she would be boring and like the jdmc says "For the Record" on her new album is a brilliant ballad, lets hope she brings it out as 3rd single with a stunning MV.

Actually, I don't think her voice was at its peak at this point. Remember she still was quite young and this was on her demo tape, so she was probably about 18 or 19 when she recorded this song. Her tone hadn't fully developed yet. Her range on this album and Emotions is probably consistently at its height though. I think she's sorta trashy nowadays just to stay relevant. I love this song, its so well written and sung.

U all keep nagging ,WHY??Mariah still got it!However,she doesn't have so many powerful notes in her songs anymore ,not because she can't "do them"!it's just that many people complain that it's annoying,so she does them as background vocals!!And ,btw, music isn't the same anymore,if she kept singing songs like this or Hero and stuff like that now, she wouldn't be succesfull anymore!!She has to keep up with all the Madonnas,Rihannas,Beyonces... I'm sure anyones who's been a fan of Mariah for many years, are just dieing to hear her belt out a new ballad like this and like many of her older ballad hits.
It's the tone of her voice, her range, the emotion and the way her voice can be so powerful yet subtle without ever sounding terrible that made us like her voice so much in the first place.
We all miss that, I hope one day, she will blow us all away again with another '#1' vocal power ballad.

It has nothing to do with projecting your
voice. The reason why she can't sing like
this anymore is because she's lost it.
All that improper technique she used of
the whistle register, (plus, IF she has
ever drank or smoked) messed up her voice.

Here debut album was truly spectacular. This album produced some of the best work by Mariah to date. Love the song, and should be included on any Mariah greatest hits compilation. Ohh, just buy the album if you don't have it!

This is a great song. Her first album was so great, so many great hits. This could have easily been a number 1 as well. Mariah during her first years was great, so fresh her voice was amazing.

Just because some people (Me included) don't like Mariah's new music as well as her old stuff does not make them idiots. It's a matter of personal taste. For example, you might like apples, I prefer oranges. One doesn't need to be flamed for prefering one over the other. Although I would rather listen to songs like this, I respect Mariah's new music because she likes it and is enjoying what she does. I will always buy her CD's and support her. But songs like this will always be special to me!
