Oh, hey, I noticed the video termed Christianity as an explosive new faith. Not to be an NT Wright fanboy, but his book The New Testament and the People of God doesn't paint Christianity as a new faith. Wright paints Christianity as a reinterpretation of Jewish eschatology. Christianity is Pharisaical Judaism focused into a clearer picture.
Father Robert Barron: I just want to say again that you are doing a good work here on YouTube, Your stuff ministers to me, and I'm sure to the many here who respond to what you are putting out there. I would only ask that you, who I am sure have many obligations, try to respond to more of the many questions and responses that I have seen here on this medium.
I find it amusing how quickly people without a faith belief "rush to dispel" the myths of religions, almost like they are afraid that the sound theological and rational arguments given like the ones in this video might compromise their own world view. To me that speaks volumes to the truth of these videos.
Luke 9:7-8... (Herod) was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again.
@Jugglable The Pharisees had believed in the resurrection, angels and spirits for a couple of centuries or more before Jesus' birth; this was the more "liberal" or broad perspective within Israel, over against the Saduccees, who denied all three as innovations. What none of the Jews were expecting was the resurrection of one man, the Messiah, in the midst of human history, before the end of the age. The particular event of Jesus' resurrection and its unique properties were not expected.
Just thought of something, Fr. B said that the most hopeful Jews believed in the resurrection at the end of time... but "Who do the people say that I am?" Luke 9:19 They answered and said, "John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again." continued...
If the resurrection did not occur it was the greatest, most elaborate, and most unlikeliest hoax to have ever occurred. There is just too much that has to be explained away in order for it not to have happened -- Where is Jesus' body? Why would his apostles be martyred for what they knew to be false? How did they manage to get historians to record that they were martyred if they weren't? What possible benefit would it have been to those who knew it was a lie (if it was in fact a lie)?
Jugglable, all the apostles but John were martyred. Why would they give up their lives so readily (especially after having abandoning Jesus during the crucifixion) if they hadn't witnessed something truly miraculous.
Also, you seem to imply that Mark's gospel is the first one. That's a popular hypothesis among modern scholars but by no means proven. It certainly isn't compelled by the commonalities with Matthew and Luke and their differences with each other.
@ElvisRockatansky "all the apostles but John were martyred" Maybe, but that won't be convincing to a skeptic since I don't think there's any record of those deaths until a few centuries after the supposed fact.
Also, the complete conversion of Paul on the road to Damascus is pretty extreme and calls out for a pretty big something to explain it.
But something that bothers me is that in Mark there's hardly anything on the resurrection! Why would Mark just gloss over that with such scant detail!? Only in the later gospels do you get doubting Thomas and eating and drinking with the disciples. Is this suggestive of legendary embellishment? This bothers me.
I can think of another point refuting the argument that Jesus was drugged and revived: If were the case, how the heck could someone in his condition move the stone from the tomb! He would probably have had all he could do just to get back up on his feet, let alone push away such a huge rock! And yet we know the rock was removed--and the Romans wouldn't have done that, because they would have had no conceivable reason to do so.
@1r1shCath0l1c I never heard the argument that he was drugged and revived. That's pretty "out there." Also, if the authorities realized that he had somehow survived the execution, they would have most certainly just finished the job and killed him.
@backwoodsninja - it's only "UFO's created circles in my fields last night" type stuff, for crazzies. The facts, the Roman soliders, who knew their wicked work, flogged the man senseless, beat him, denied him water and food, spat on him and mocked him, then he was forced to carry his cross through the streets, note he fell multiple times, and - even the Roman soliders, who knew their wicked worked - saw he was slow close to death, forced another to help carry his cross - then, the (cont)
@backwoodsninja - Roman soliders, who knew their wicked work, CRUCIFIED Him, speared Him and "blood and water came rushing out", multiple soliders DIRECTLY determining, He was now DEAD, gave His body to his family to bury - so He then was laid in tomb, where NO 2000yr old medical assistance was even available to Him for days, magically the MASSIVE blood loss, destruction of entire bodily functions and infection didn't even impact Him and he staggered out of the tomb three days later and (cont)
@backwoodsninja - fooled everyone to this day - oh, that was after, as already mentioned, He removed the stone from the tomb entrance and using, no doubt his magic invisible coat staggered past the Roman guards. Yep, that's the tale of Jesus tricking everyone into believing He "survived" the crucifixtion! Hold on, I gotta go and watch the aliens make few more circles in the field - it makes more sense then the Jesus secretly survived nonesense!

I agree NT Wright's Resurrection of the Son of God is awesome. But you can get the shorter version in his The Challenge of Jesus.

Resurrection was well within Jewish imagination.

@billybagbom How is it different than what Herod thought happened to John?
