  • Nice rig. @doctoroblivion. You can't melt titanium in these furnaces with out a certin atmosphere. Its normally done in a vacuum induction furnace

  • Ebay has plenty of vendors selling Salamnder Crucibles.

  • Where can I get a Super Salamander crucible? Progress Tools went belly up. The company that took them over at least the website has crucibles but I don't know if they are the same thing. I sent them an email but I have to wait for a reply. Some times email isn't fast enough.

  • Nice job- thank you for making this video. Casting iron/steel is considered to be "the" home challenge. Lot of difference between 1200 for aluminum vs 2300 for steel

  • was this lpg fired?

  • Very controlled pour! Nicely done

  • can this thing get hot enough (safely under normal use) to melt steel or titanium as well?

  • i have those same gloves

  • Hi ,Can you tell me what it will call that bowl which you melt mtal on it and where I can buy it Nice to hear from you or anyone and give me more information!!

  • @ba470 the 'poy' he poured the metal out of is called a crucible and you can buy them from most science stores, or online tool vendors.

  • Hi,

I'm trying to find someone to make copies of a cast iron exhaust manifold. Do you know of anyone that might be able to take on this work.

    Thanks

  • Good vid. Nice setup.I do some brass and bronze with my 5 gallon bucket furnace. Would love to get into iron.

  • did you use iron, cast iron,or steel...also what did you cast besides the ingots?

  • Good safety gear, work area and style, good to see.

  • Gene. Keep the vids coming. I see no vids on iron casting or steel casting.

    Most are aluminum.

  • how did you make the cast

  • I like the video, but my cupola will way out do any crucible furnes. 10 minutes til the first pour then 5 minutes for the rest until Iam all done. 30 pounds of iron charge. thats over 350 pounds per hour vs. one crucible.

I can stop at 1 charge or 1000.

  • Is there a reason why noone seems to use a coke or coal fire for crucible cast iron casting?

  • So how did your castings turn out? Are you making your A3 in 3/4" scale and, if so, are you willing to sell a set of castings?

  • Awesome stuff !!

  • which utensil you have for iron?

  • very nice vid

  • yeah what kind of burner are you using i have a cupola, that is the only thing i can get hot enough do you use oxygen and propane mapp gas or acetylene? i us coke and that the only thing i can get to 2700F

  • Good, Very Good. I want to make some similar furnace to yours. Thanks and greetings from Spain

  • what type of burner r u using? it looks like it might be a babington burner.

  • Did you use your refractory all the way up to the metal shell or did you put a layer of insulation around it such as perlite. Ive herd that some people just use a layer of refractory like 2 inches thick and then insulate around that with perlite. The foundry im working on is right about the same size as yours, will have a 10inch diameter hole. Any help or advise will be greatly appreciated. thanks

  • My refractory is about 1' thick with a layer of vermiculite insulation around it. (If I had it to do over again, I think I'd use "real" insulation.

  • No! Someone has probably done it and survived, but odds are good that the pot would break spilling molten metal everywhere.

  • Will a stone flower cup work? i just wanna know =P

  • The skimmer I use is just steel. It will melt if it's in the pot too long, but just for scraping off the slag it's OK. If you mean some kind of ladle, you'd want to line it with refractory - like a sand/fireclay mixture.

  • where can we find the "spoon" used to take up the liquid iron???

if the iron has melt then, the "spoon" is ok???

  • yeah i need a cup too can't find them what are the made of and what are they where can i get one

  • I use clay-graphite "Super Salamander" crucibles that come pre-annealed. I got mine at progresstool.

  • were do people get those friggen concrete cup things?? D:<

  • I use clay-graphite "Super Salamander" crucibles that come pre-annealed. I got mine at progresstool.

  • Lucky! That looks so fun.

  • love how it gloves

  • Nice cracklab ;)
