Seriously I always wanted them to use tech for education...but not like this crap. If kids wants to skip then kick them out. Let them realize they will have no future. Don't waste money trying to take care of kids who don't care, use it to help the students who want to actually learn for god sakes.
When I was in school I had a 3.5GPA and took AP classes, teachers liked me and I had a rep for being a good student but the moment I started missing lots of school (due to illness not for shits and giggles) the admins wanted to call the cops on my parents! All they want is their money, not educated kids. Never do they bother the flunkies who show up each day and do nothing but me? I was a fucking problem.
I totally agree. I skipped school all the time and did well in the classes I wanted to do well in. (I.E. the ones I actually put in study time for) For a lot of subjects, sometimes you don't really have to be there as long as you have a good textbook.
That's the stupidest fuckin thing I've ever heard. If someone is skipping school, it's often because they don't give a shit.. And they will continue to not give a shit whether they're given these dumbass tracking devices or not. If it were me, I'd sell the fuckin thing and buy myself something useful.
Ok, the student is not at the school. Then what? Get a car and find him or her via GPS. They have the manpower to do that, I dont think so. Some after school system with teachers help etc would probably be better. Students skip school because of issues usually. If its just once a year it isnt a big deal.
I would imagine when they say "voluntary" they actually mean they'll give students who have a history of skipping school the option of suspension/ being expelled or having the GPS. Not particularly voluntary.
That said it wouldn't be hard to just give the GPS to a friend who is at school. Kids aren't stupid when it comes to getting around shit like this.
Bad memories. My 5th grade teacher's solution, was to threaten to put my dad in jail. That didn't really work, and neither did the little meetings they'd force me into. I just got into a decent school, and told myself, "if I don't do well here, it's the end of the line."

Schools spend on alot of stupid crap, (smart boards... look it up...) and My school PAYED for Firefox on their computers....Yeah they don't realize its open source and free online...
In California, the schools are given money based on the number of students that attend or $x per day per student. Say that the gps costs $300 to buy, at say $30 (made up amount) per day getting a student in the school for an extra 10 days pays for the system.
police polices, school teaches. Whats up with this bullshit? Just like fucking drug tests on schools. Are you fucking serious? Its not the schools job to know who is where and is taking what kind of drug, they should be teaching. I know the school has responsibility over the children while they are there but fuck me, you can take it too far. What are we? Freaking wildlife?
Even the children realize that the education system is a fucking joke why don't they spend this money on actually educating the kids instead of policing them
I'm for it. as soon as the admins realize that the kids are just sending them text messages to annoy them, and then that the teachers have to be fired and classes are up to 1000 kids per teacher and the rest of the teachers strike/quit, and the kids can't go to school... well aint that just the beginning of a revolution?
@TheHammerOfJustice1 It might not even be the work of lobbyists. More likely it's foolish educators who believe that force and control will improve attendance and grades. This is not the case. Forcing a child to learn is like tightening your grip on a bar of soap.
this means the school could track them where ever they are not just if they text the school, they all ready caught school officials spying on students at home via mac book computers, do not give people access to your kids like that..., they would have to use an independent device or there own phones either way they could spy on your kids
Anna says she doesn't want school administrators to be in her kid's business. But the problem is parents are so uninvolved nowadays public schools have become responsible for these kids. I think the GPS is extreme and not the solution. But public schools have become like social services because people don't take care of their kids properly.
Kids have a right to privacy? Give me a break. I don't see how parents would be offended by this unless they are the type who let their kids have parties and hide stuff in their rooms. Once kids are at school, the school is legally responsible for the kids until mom or dad picks them up.
There are a lot of challenges in getting kids interested in school. Kids have many influences: parents, peers, teachers, and the environment. But they need to be in school or otherwise they will end up in juvi.
@zava55 Letting the school take the whole damn responsibility is like not giving a crap about your children.
This is so typical America, you desperately need money and actually come with stupid ideas like these instead of getting off your own asses and taking some responsibility for your children. And by responsibility i mean not controlling them like a fucking parasite on their back. Give them room to explore and figure things out on their own, but with advice and common reason.
@Helmutlozzi I'm not talking about kids who skip school once or twice. I'm talking about habitual truant students. I don't disagree with you, we should find other ways to get kids to be more creative AND parents should be more responsible for their children. The problem I find, as a youth counselor at a boys home, is kids lack the proper nurture at home (i.e. f'cked up parenting). I'm not saying all families. I work with extreme cases. Other than the streets, someone has to be responsible.
My brother's school has the chips in the school IDs, which are currently not using GPS technology but are making it really hard to do attendance. It takes about a minute to scan the room and see whose here, but as many as six to scan them all in on some days. Plus, I mean: "hey, carry my card with you today, I'm craving Wendy's?" "Sure, but Friday I got a cousin's birthday party I want to look good for, so you gotta keep mine with you." "Deal."
the underlying issue that is creating the symptoms (truancy, dropout rate, poor "test" scores) is that our schooling system doesn't nurture humanity's natural urge for truth and a satisfying existence on earth.
we are just molded into cogs and sprockets to become part of the corporate consumerist machine. the resistance of this is subconscious and natural.
attach the illness, not the symptoms.
same problem with Big Pharm and the drugging of North America.
@EdgarD8387 progressivism isn't about robbing people of their privacy. it's not wise to get your information about a political ideal from a source that opposes that ideal (e.g conservative blogs that define progressivism).
@MaryJesusJoseph Cenk and Ana disagree with the method, not the intent. Yeah kids should go to school every day but there are far more effective ways to accomplish this.
@MaryJesusJoseph This would be effective in increasing attendance rates, but it wouldn't make students any smarter. The goal is to make kids want to be there. You can't force kids to learn, they need to be open to it. Nurturing curiosity and a willingness to learn should be school's #1 priority... that way, students will continue to educate themselves even after they graduate.
how about.. we take the money and give teachers a more realistic work day. 2 shifts, the 1st would take early morning when students arrive today, the second would go until 5pm when most parents are getting off work. the extra hours would provide time for another class as well as studyhall/tutoring/arts/PE etc. more teachers reduces class size, increases employment, and kids are not latch-key from 3pm on. most families have to have two working parents. schools can match today's sched not farms
So guys... how long before employers start doing this to workers? I mean, teachers are all too keen to compare school life to the workplace in many ways... to what extent will that be true?
Instead of writing off students who skip school and labeling them lazy and unmotivated, maybe look into why they don't want to be at school. Maybe there are bullying issues. Maybe they realise that most of the work they are given is truly pointless and not at all beneficial to their education. Maybe they don't need to sit in a classroom in order to learn. Not all students are built the same. Mass production education doesn't work for everyone.
It is inconceivable to me that any rational person would say, "My kid is skipping class, let me GPS his ass." & think that will solve the problem. This is just like, "I'm gonna pop a pill to feel better." because they don't want to take the time to solve the problem, which is causing the symptoms.
I'm only 21, and I have no idea when or if I'm going to have kids. But there is no way Jose I'm going to put them in public school. Khan academy all the way...and then maybe a prep school before college. Seriously, I don't want my children to grow up thinking that it's normal to be treated like a criminal on probation.
This is sick shit. They need to allow children as young as 15 or so to chose if they wish to be in school. Why on earth is attending high school mandatory and punishable by law? I quit at 15, I went to court and had to emancipate myself so I wouldn't be arrested, and so I could work and move out on my own by 16. I think this is a better reality for most kids today, get them out of school and into the real world of M-F 9-5 work being this is where most of them will end up. A GED will suffice.
@TheUSMetalhead Yes and no. Not everyone is suited for the 9-5 life. Those that succeed in the school system as it is today do well in the structured 9-5 workplace. Those that don't succeed in the current school system... well, they are blatantly ignored and passed off as stupid or lazy
How about giving teachers a little fucking respect, and realizing that school is for learning, not fun and games? Instead of bitching about how boring school is, try turning off your iPhone and putting a little effort into learning.
@tctheunbeliever You seem to think that if some students aren't fitting in with the way school is, then it's "just their own damn fault and they deserve whatever burger flipping job they end up with".
Do you really think education is anywhere near perfection? Modern neurology alone should drastically change the way school is. In short, quit being intolerant and naive, and blaming people for things that aren't really in their control anyway.
@tctheunbeliever If you understood that there are actual, helpful things that can be done to change school for the better so kids won't have this boredom issue anyway, then you'd realize your earlier assertion that people should stop complaining about the boredom issue is not helpful, it ignores the real problem. I exaggerated your position to illustrate, but it doesn't change the fact that your position is plainly wrong.
@Jotto999 My position was that teachers deserve some respect, students need to make an effort, and that the basic purpose of school is learning, not entertainment--if you think this is "plainly wrong", I plainly disagree.
@tctheunbeliever What's plainly wrong is how you think there is no valid criticism behind the lack of engagement some students have in school. I think you are just missing my point.
@Jeridiculous So some students have to spend all their time playing video games and gossiping with their friends? Wow, I thought I was a liberal. I never thought I'd be saying "In my day, we couldn't bring electronic toys to class, and we didn't get to decide how easy the lesson plan had to be." The grown-up world doesn't always care about your personal needs.
@tctheunbeliever You misunderstand. I said nothing about playing video games all day and goofing off. I just said that different students have different needs. Instead of forcing kids to learn the same stuff the exact same way, education should be tailor fit to each student's way of learning. Education should be dynamic.
And what do you mean by "THE grown-up world"? When these kids grow up, the world will be THEIRS, and its up to them what to do with it.
@Jeridiculous Likewise, I didn't claim that all students are identical. But teachers have to work with what they have, and simply blaming them for everything ignores some very real problems with parents and students. I'm not a solipsist, so I don't believe that everyone LITERALLY creates his or her own world.
If kids dont want to go to school so be it, focus on the kids that go and give them a proper education...as for the skippers well someone has to work in mcd's right?
@24xEBK Right now, the education system is such that the students are forced to adapt to it or fall by the wayside. This leaves a lot of bright, clever kids behind simply because they don't absorb information in an assembly-line style system. Instead, education should be tailor made to fit the learning style and ability of the students.
Use that fraking money and put it into the damned school to give it the funding, and the equipment to properly teach the kids. Are you fucking kidding me, instead of actually helping the kids your just going to track them? We don't need big brother to make the kids do better, we need to make it interesting, change the methods of teaching, not the methods of tracking.
it's becoming a necessity when parents place the blame on the school for anything bad happening to their kids during school hours...whether they are at school or not.

police polices, school teaches.

I'm for it. as soon as the admins realize that the kids are just sending them text messages to annoy them, and then that the teachers have to be fired and classes are up to 1000 kids per teacher and the rest of the teachers strike/quit, and the kids can't go to school... well aint that just the beginning of a revolution?

TheHammerOfJustice1 1 year ago
@TheHammerOfJustice1 It might not even be the work of lobbyists. More likely it's foolish educators who believe that force and control will improve attendance and grades. This is not the case. Forcing a child to learn is like tightening your grip on a bar of soap.
Jeridiculous 1 year ago
this means the school could track them where ever they are not just if they text the school, they all ready caught school officials spying on students at home via mac book computers, do not give people access to your kids like that..., they would have to use an independent device or there own phones either way they could spy on your kids

But they need to be in school or otherwise they will end up in juvi.
zava55 1 year ago
@zava55 Letting the school take the whole damn responsibility is like not giving a crap about your children.
This is so typical America, you desperately need money and actually come with stupid ideas like these instead of getting off your own asses and taking some responsibility for your children. And by responsibility i mean not controlling them like a fucking parasite on their back. Give them room to explore and figure things out on their own, but with advice and common reason.
Helmutlozzi 1 year ago

MaryJesusJoseph 1 year ago
@MaryJesusJoseph Cenk and Ana disagree with the method, not the intent. Yeah kids should go to school every day but there are far more effective ways to accomplish this.
Jeridiculous 1 year ago
@Jeridiculous Of course there are more effective ways to accomplish this. Campuses could just lock down and not allow anyone on or off.
MaryJesusJoseph 1 year ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@MaryJesusJoseph This would be effective in increasing attendance rates, but it wouldn't make students any smarter. The goal is to make kids want to be there. You can't force kids to learn, they need to be open to it. Nurturing curiosity and a willingness to learn should be school's #1 priority... that way, students will continue to educate themselves even after they graduate.
Jeridiculous 1 year ago
Maybe not have such crappy school system and kids wouldn't be so appalled with going to school?

Hand the GPS to your friend. Have him take it to class. Technology thwarted.
If the kid doesn't care and the parents aren't involved, there's not much a school can do about it.

how about.. we take the money and give teachers a more realistic work day.

SkullXII 1 year ago
Instead of writing off students who skip school and labeling them lazy and unmotivated, maybe look into why they don't want to be at school. Maybe there are bullying issues. Maybe they realise that most of the work they are given is truly pointless and not at all beneficial to their education. Maybe they don't need to sit in a classroom in order to learn. Not all students are built the same. Mass production education doesn't work for everyone.

OK, my improper grammar didn't help my point. Choose, not chose.
TheUSMetalhead 1 year ago
This is sick shit. They need to allow children as young as 15 or so to chose if they wish to be in school. Why on earth is attending high school mandatory and punishable by law? I quit at 15, I went to court and had to emancipate myself so I wouldn't be arrested, and so I could work and move out on my own by 16. I think this is a better reality for most kids today, get them out of school and into the real world of M-F 9-5 work being this is where most of them will end up. A GED will suffice.
TheUSMetalhead 1 year ago
@TheUSMetalhead Yes and no. Not everyone is suited for the 9-5 life. Those that succeed in the school system as it is today do well in the structured 9-5 workplace. Those that don't succeed in the current school system... well, they are blatantly ignored and passed off as stupid or lazy

Jotto999 1 year ago
@Jotto999 Yes, it's been at least 3 days since I was in a classroom.
tctheunbeliever 1 year ago
@tctheunbeliever You seem to think that if some students aren't fitting in with the way school is, then it's "just their own damn fault and they deserve whatever burger flipping job they end up with".
Do you really think education is anywhere near perfection? Modern neurology alone should drastically change the way school is. In short, quit being intolerant and naive, and blaming people for things that aren't really in their control anyway.
Jotto999 1 year ago
@Jotto999 Don't put words in my mouth. You're arguing with a straw man.
tctheunbeliever 1 year ago
@tctheunbeliever If you understood that there are actual, helpful things that can be done to change school for the better so kids won't have this boredom issue anyway, then you'd realize your earlier assertion that people should stop complaining about the boredom issue is not helpful, it ignores the real problem. I exaggerated your position to illustrate, but it doesn't change the fact that your position is plainly wrong.
Jotto999 1 year ago
@Jotto999 My position was that teachers deserve some respect, students need to make an effort, and that the basic purpose of school is learning, not entertainment--if you think this is "plainly wrong", I plainly disagree.
tctheunbeliever 1 year ago
@tctheunbeliever What's plainly wrong is how you think there is no valid criticism behind the lack of engagement some students have in school. I think you are just missing my point.
Jotto999 1 year ago
@Jotto999 I don't recall saying (or typing) that.
tctheunbeliever 1 year ago
@tctheunbeliever This was implied by how you rudely spoke against people calling it boring.
Jotto999 1 year ago
@Jotto999 Incidentally, I hate cliches like "burger-flipping job." There's nothing wrong with honest work.
tctheunbeliever 1 year ago
@tctheunbeliever Not every student approaches education the same way. Different students have different needs.
Jeridiculous 1 year ago
@Jeridiculous So some students have to spend all their time playing video games and gossiping with their friends? Wow, I thought I was a liberal. I never thought I'd be saying "In my day, we couldn't bring electronic toys to class, and we didn't get to decide how easy the lesson plan had to be." The grown-up world doesn't always care about your personal needs.
tctheunbeliever 1 year ago
@tctheunbeliever You misunderstand. I said nothing about playing video games all day and goofing off. I just said that different students have different needs. Instead of forcing kids to learn the same stuff the exact same way, education should be tailor fit to each student's way of learning. Education should be dynamic.
And what do you mean by "THE grown-up world"? When these kids grow up, the world will be THEIRS, and its up to them what to do with it.
Jeridiculous 1 year ago
@Jeridiculous Likewise, I didn't claim that all students are identical. But teachers have to work with what they have, and simply blaming them for everything ignores some very real problems with parents and students. I'm not a solipsist, so I don't believe that everyone LITERALLY creates his or her own world.

24xEBK 1 year ago
@24xEBK Right now, the education system is such that the students are forced to adapt to it or fall by the wayside. This leaves a lot of bright, clever kids behind simply because they don't absorb information in an assembly-line style system. Instead, education should be tailor made to fit the learning style and ability of the students.
Jeridiculous 1 year ago
