@recoveringcultmember Music of this type changes all the time with different influences. That's what happens with lots of things in an oral or rural tradition. If a song changes one way or the other it isn't that dramatic - especially if something has some ugly racist content.
@CristinaFernandez Yes and no. You are correct that music changes depending on time and place. However I disagree that there was "ugly racist" content in the original. What there was were use of words that make modern folks uncomfortable. But the original song reflected our culture at the time. It always puzzles me why we in the USA consider the preservation of cultures all over the world to be vitally important but our own must be sugar coated and sanitized.
I guess everyone's afraid to sing this song.
