  • Really great talk! Informative, funny and inspiring.

  • A lot of problems he is talking about were solved with the iphone

  • 15:50

  • stupid

  • Alarm goes off... David looks over left shoulder thinking, "DONT SHOOT ME!"

  • yeah simplicity sells

  • The Mac was a closed architecture. PC was open and people loved the freedom. Apple were tech Nazis. That is why the PC won.

  • lol @ pc nerds hating on apple. You've been eating your words for decades. I have windows XP 64 and Windows 7 that I run with VMware Fusion within OSX and I avoid using them whenever possible. The user experience is dreadful. It's designed by tech geeks whose sense of design is non-existent. I can just imaging how bad their social skills are and how bad they dress... Get off your ugly PC and go find a girlfriend.

  • @jeroliver Its a computer mate, its not meant to improve social skills, or help you pick up. Anyone who buys one for that is missing the plot. Nothing against Mac's (which are technically 'PCs') love the interface and all the shinny features. But if i need a customized computing experience for a day to day basis with more powerful programs, a Mac is the last place I'd look. And if i need advice on tech, I will go straight to a geek, not some hipster who needs the latest fad.

  • @bundle12 Latest fad? I've been using a mac for over 25 years. No regrets. More powerful programs? wtf? I use programs based on my needs, not how powerful they are. I use Adobe, final cut and 3d max and I'm always flying. Have fun w your pc.

  • @jeroliver Simple fact is that I just need something bit more powerful for my work, therefore it’s one of my needs. If I could you use the Mac OS with custom hardware, I would. In fact I probably never touch Windows again. But apple have everything all closed and exclusive, so that’s impossible. I guess it’s still opinion with one not being wholly better than the other, just whatever suits, so no need to hate.

  • @bundle12 I respect that using other hardware or software, because OSX is holding them back, is often necessary. I don't hate on that. I actually find that quite impressive. I just hate on people hating on macs just cause. My last tower lasted me over 10 years. In that time some of my pc user friends have bought 5 or more. The quality and user experience is a better choice for the average user imo. You sound like you're doing some more serious work than just using MSword and downloading viruses.

  • have you guys ever heard of linux? because if you haven't, you should.

  • God this guy is a shill, and his song was retarded.

I can't wrap my mind around someone that appreciates technology yet likes Apple products.

  • Internet IS a global village. Being intelligent would be for the website to figure out your location using an API so you dont have to write your address.

  • I use both Mac and PC with an equal number of complaints regarding both, but if we talk about simplicity, let's look at the name comparisons

Internet Explorer / Safari - if you're foreign, why the hell would you think to surf the net, with some crap called "Safari"?

Next, look at the price difference, thanks to Windows the $100 dollar laptop charity is possible. At $600 for just a mac mini (less monitor and mouse), Mac can't compare

  • ipad.

computers are still to difficult for most people, this will solve that.

  • I hope everyone that works on tech watches this, because he gets the idea right. Simplicity is oh so important. The songs are a little whack, but I'm a bit of a nerd too so I don't judge.

  • Some of his points are valid, and I don't see this guy being OVERLY biased. However, when he talked about the start button, I couldn't believe it. The reason why is because it makes perfect sense. You want to START the shutdown procedure... Other then that, great presentation.

  • But that's the problem, there shouldn't be a "shutdown procedure". In Mac OS X, when you click shutdown, it just shuts down, in 5 seconds tops (if you still have applications opened).

  • Lol, this guy is AWESOME!!! I haven't laughet so hard since Jeff Dunham's show!!! (rofl) :D :D :D

  • Comment removed

  • i fucking love this guy! his enthusiasm for tech is infectious. i could listen to him rant all day...

  • Good presentation!1 Simplicity does sell!!!

  • Is there a way to open a MS Word doc (email attachment for ex.) even though you don't have Office installed? If so then I don't really need to buy a word processor then do I? What with Google Docs.

  • try Open Office.

  • YOU DO NOT NEED TO EVER BUY A WORD PROCESSOR. There are dozens of free alternatives to Office. There are so many "open-source" (completely free, no strings attached) alternatives to just about every computer program you can think of that there is almost no reason to buy one. I use "Kivio" for professional management flowcharting, free. I use OpenOffice for spreadsheets, presentations etc. Use The Gimp over Photoshop.

Once the world converts to free software, we will see REAL human efficiency.

  • Ya thanks. The only problem is that, in today's word at least, a person has to deal with proprietary software. Receive edit and send back a Word document for example. I guess you can put anything into a PDF, but then the person on the other end can't edit it can they? Not unless they have some kind of caricter recognition software. It would be nice to have one free standard universal program that everyone is familiar with. But who's going to spend $ publicizing something they don't get paid for?

  • OpenOffice Writer can "save as" a number of formats, including *.doc. I receive, edit and send OpenOffice documents to MS Office users all the time.

  • what voice recognition software was he using?

  • It looks like Dragon.

Yeah I think it's dragon pretty good stuff.

  • yes, thanks...it's probably

     "Dragon NaturallySpeaking"

  • If he supported the PC, this world would be quite perfect.

  • He doesnt support mac over PC, he's just supporting their grasp of user interface design. And for good reason. This is just common sense stuff that programmers need to be aware of (or told of: you can't blame programmers for not thinking of it) when creating interfaces. It gets very difficult when you are absorbed in a project to understand how it feels to use a given system as a virgin user. It's the same thing when writing a book, making art or music:: it's HARD to design for virgin users.

  • Wow, of all people, David Pogue gets to speak in front of a million people, just so he can bash an OS? He is looking in the wrong direction. #1 His bashing of vista sharing traits that macintosh has shows he is just a Apple fanboy. #2 start button. It has been replaced by a glassy windows orb. #3 Screens are getting bigger. #4 With windows 7 on the way ], I want to see him crawl on his knees groping for more excuses why windows 7 is a failure. What is so great about apple? seriously?

  • To add insult to injury, David Pogue is a fucking joke and The guy is a flaming homosexual.

Shows why his taste in Macintosh is overly accentuated.

  • much below TED standards. not worth the time spent.

  • Lol

    It erased my roms!

    FTW!!!

  • funny. i laughed hard, but it is a comment in poor taste.

  • Mirage, barrage.

    :D

    Those rhyme with garage!

  • Mac's suck they can't play modern games and to upgrade them you have to buy a new one!!!

all OS suck but hopefully they will evolve better

  • 1) Forgot about other big countries, like, oh, I don't know, Canada!

    2) You press the START menu to shut down for a reason, you want to START the SHUT DOWN procedure!

Other then that and overly bashing microsoft, it was very good.

  • Crappy software and websites drive me crazy.

  • 1st musiczor rl name plz

  • lol I have 2 of those folding memory cards! They are awesome

  • Well, nice stuff. But when he talks about Win/Mac stuff its simple the same Sherry Turkle wrote in her book "Life in net"

    I love both!

  • Could someone tell me what speech recognition software he uses? Quite impressive, esp. for 2006. (And I guess there is a version 9 or 10 now?) Regards Rag.

  • I think it's Dragon

  • Ok, thanks, I will check it out. Regards Raggo.

  • Yes, its Dragon Naturally Speaking v. 8. I saw there is a 9 also. Is there a Mac version? This was very convincing... But i guess its 3 times better than the bundled Mac version. :( I have a Mac, so would love to have this for Macs. But thanks anyway.

  • Hey, what about Canada? Canadians are HUGE internet users.

But yeah I agree with like everything he's said. [/Mac user]

  • You shouldnt be working for NYT with ur songs, you should be working at MadTV, Go David!!!

  • The merger of business journalism and entertainment.

  • Pogue's AWESOME.

And Now I want a Mac even more..

  • Bravo

  • Bill Gates did not write the first DOS (min 12)

he had bought it from Gary Kildall

  • There's more videos on pogue's website :

    davidpogue[dot]com

I love "Don't cry for me Cupertino" and "I Just Called to Say I Bought You" ;-)

  • This guy seriously has some beady eyes! hahaha

  • At first I found Mr. Pogue's postings on YouTube

rather annoying... He's still annoying. I wish I had

    never stumbled on his YouTube.

  • You poor thing! As David Pogue said, there's an off switch.

  • Errr, well I don't like Macs because I can't chose what hardware I want.

  • The USB hard drive for my Mac is made by Evesham, the hard drive built in to my Mac is amde by Hitachi. The popular assumption that all the hardware is made b Apple is clearly wrong.

  • some people dont like him because he tells it how it is with Mac's and PC's

  • HA! Pogue is my hero...

  • Måc is mad good

  • Hahahaha great stuff.

  • Microsoft Comedy Central! :)))
