  • This is like my high school in West Fargo.

  • Very nice.

  • nice..

  • This school makes me proud and I wish I could be in that one. Not in Cupertino High School in California. They did not allow us to express ourselves vs. Westboro baptist church. My school sickened me. Good job Gunn High School! :D

  • My school! So proud to go to this school

  • This is amazing, I am so thankful that in this world, people like these exist, people who are so willing to help the cause. Because seriously, I live in the Bay Area and this is something great.

  • Beautiful, I cries I wish I went to this school with all my heart. I have never seen such a accepting loving school my school is wonderful to but its very dark, gang activity, bullying etc. My school is tough and to go to a place SO accepting would make me feel wonderful <3

  • lovely

  • Karma Charger disapproves of WBC.

    They've been warned.

  • "God hates fags."

No, "God hates intolerant firebrands who corrupt Jesus' message of love."

    Go to hell, WBC.

  • @TheClassicalPolitico IM NOT OK WITH THE WESTOBORO, my brother is gay

but you havent read the bibble, i used to say the same until i read it all, actually what they say of god its more real based on the bibble, because in the bibble hes sexist, racist, loves slaves kills millions of innocents, drowns babies and its homophobic...it took me a while to realize that i really dont beliieve in christianity anymore..i call myself an agnostic

  • @TheClassicalPolitico I totally agree with you! Even though I'm not religious at all (I'm not sure whether I am able to fully categorize myself under "Agnostic", but I'm definitely not Atheist) and I really hope I don't offend anyone by saying this but...who really cares if God hates gays or not? Just because God hates something doesn't mean that we have to hate it as well. This concept applies to not only God, but our peers as well.

  • i think you guys are awesome!

  • I remember that day! I had a blast I came form Mid-Peninsula High to show support!

  • @tlwright309 You do realize that your school is known for your repeated anti-semetic incidents... Try bring some of your "support" back to your classmates and you might lose that bad rep.

  • I LOVE YOU GUNN!!! Thankyou so much! you are making this world a better place :')

  • As much as I think Shirley Phelps should be beaten to a bloody pulp, I'm sick and tired of these loser anti hate groups. I'm a judgmental person. No one will dictate me.

  • LOVE YOU CAT!

    Gunn high school <3

So proud. I'm so glad we could be an inspiration to people

  • great job guys !!

  • This is really great. Nice job to all these students, and everyone else involved. It almost makes me wish WBC would try something in my town/area, just so we could have such a great response. And the kids singing "We Shall Overcome" made me so happy.

  • Nice, really nice...

    ^_^

  • I am amazed at these students and teachers. And anyone who moved for a positive outcome I want you to know that this lesbian thanks you! <3

  • WBC would love my school....at my school you get teased to insanity if you aren't christian, american, straight, and "normal" (whatever that is)

If you wear too many dark colours or bright olours in the wrong way then you're bad. If you don't listen to pop, country or rap then you're bad. If you aren't Christian, then you're bad. If you're any other nationality or you look any other nationality then you're bad (our poor exchange students)

And the worse part? The bullies get away with this crap

  • @andipoetic *consoles Andi*

  • @andipoetic same at my school dont feel bad but thankfully i graduated

  • @andipoetic You should contact the ACLU about this school you attend, especially if it is a public school.

  • @andipoetic so much for them being christians then...

  • westboro baptist church needs to drink the kool aid already and leave people alone

  • As a kid living in South America I was amazed by the TV depictions of American society: It was one of hate and bigotry, in which it was accepted and encouraged to discriminate minorities such as gays and latins like me. Watching this however gives me so much hope and I'm passing this on to show that Americans are not those Creationist theistic douchebags that many here believe they are. Indeed, this gives me hope. And excuse me for my bad English...

  • @ghettoguy1992 your english is great

  • @ghettoguy1992 TV is never a good description of society. Watching a society's television is a great way to learn what a society isn't. It also helps that Gunn is located in one of the most accepting regions in the united states :)

  • @ghettoguy1992 What bad English? What you said seemed pretty eloquent to me.

  • I go to school in the same town as Gunn High School, and I have many friends that go there. I can definitely say that Palo Alto and the Bay Area in general is a beautifully diverse and colorful community. We have people from all over the world that live in our region, and all of us can come together and express our love for one another when met by hate. WELL DONE, GUNN!! :)

  • is gunn high school a gay school?

  • this little light of mine, i'm gonna let it shine, let it shine let it shine, let it shine! <3

  • This level of maturity from high schoolers is inspiring and warms the coals of my heart.

  • I would love to live in a place like this, it would be a great place to raise my children.....love it love it love it!

  • A very inspiring video from what appears to be an amazing group of young people. Good for you for taking a stand against intolerance.

  • 48 people are westboro church followers.

  • Reminds me of the hippie movement with the hippies putting flowers in soldiers' guns.

  • 48 people are members of the Westboro Baptist Church.

  • LOL!! One of the haters' signs says: "you will eat your children"!!! Thank God for these students.... And the fact that they don't use violence is just great! Because anyone with some sense of reality understands that those religious extremists shouldn't be hated but helped!! Someone please teach them what 'paranoia' is...

  • Gunn seems like a really cool place... wish I lived there....

Also the perfect response to WBC

  • This school and these teens are why I still have some faith in this world~!

  • thats my calssroom at 0:52 :D GO GUNN DOWN WITH WBC

  • @lionatemeboy thank you

  • These kids are great. Truly inspirational

  • Love knows no race, religion, color, gender or creed. It's always good to see people standing together in the face of hatred and showing love. If we could just remember to show love to everyone, regardless of race, religion, wealth, gender, sexual orientation or any of our other differences and accept that we're all different but all the same, the world would be a much better place. Spread the love, people.

  • I go to Gunn's opposing school. We are like death enemies with them. But on this day, a ton of people from my school went over to Gunn and we all allied together.

  • when I see these teens... I see much hope for the future :) Well done xxx

  • This was a lovely video, although I've heard that this church is actually a group of lawyers who try to provoke people into attacking them so they can sue.

  • The teacher said it best. Tolerance is not enough, will never be at peace until we are truly accepting of each other.

  • I totally agree with what Gunn High School is doing. Someone needs to stand up to hate groups like Westboro Baptist Church and their gospel of hatred. God loves everyone, gay, straight, black and white. I doubt that Jesus Christ would approve of what Fred Phelps is doing.

  • Great job Gunn! I'm proud of you.

  • This is amazing!

  • Gunn is a trend setter. They Lead, not follow. Kudos for courage and strength. I was very impressed that they didn't tolerate, they accepted. It's long overdue in America.

You guys go. Be proud. Be you!

  • This highschool should be the standard for every highschool!

  • Awesome job Gunn High School Students! Fred Phelps and the rest of the WBC can burn in hell. :)

    Peace out.

  • Well done ...power to the people!

  • You go guys!

  • IGL! yeahhh

0:33 gunn's interscholastic gaming league! yeah, we're nerds. accepting, kind, free nerds.

  • This gives me so much hope.

  • Beautiful video.

  • I'm soooo happy to see this. Chapeau to you all! You've made the world a better place. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • I think we should all learn from these kids. Kids like these give me hope for this country, people like the WBC and their supporters are the past, one that we need to leave behind and ever let happen again.

  • Oh,the Westboro Baptist Church..

    They looked soooooo small,didnt they?

    Much Love,Gunn High School : )

    You did good : )

  • What a beautiful video. It gives one hope!

  • These kids .. This school has set a new standard with the GREATEST idea ever!! I saw this back when it first happened and posted it to my FB page .. and just today, posted it to a couple more threads of conversation that are going on. Gunn High School students, parents and faculty has every reason to be SO VERY PROUD of how this was handled when the WBC came calling.

  • My idea if they ever came to my town would be to get my capoeira instructor and his class and my capoeira class. and anyone who knew capoeira or didnt. to bring out the berimbaus and drums and have as big of a roda as we could get. capoeira is a perfect way to counter these people. because for something that came from so much hatred and discrimination, there is none.

  • Absolutely brilliant!!! Go Gunn High School!!!

  • The WBC is shooting themselves in the foot when they do these protests, because it only makes people detest them more. In a weird and twisted way, Westboro "church" is actually helping the GLBT population gain acceptance, because people (who sometimes are blind to the existing homophobia in our culture) suddenly wake up and smell the bigotry. Most people thankfully can't stand bigotry, and realize how important it is to fight back.

  • @Elentaurel sorry, i could only thumb up your comment once <=/ i wrote something along the same lines as this on my Facebook, got a lot of likes there too lol

  • @Elentaurel you don't understand them at all... they have given up on everyone. They are not trying to change people they instead think they are informing people on gods will by telling them they are going to hell. Their mission is to get the message out there they feel the end is coming very soon and they want to make it known that all "sinners" are going to hell. Basically, to them this world does not matter, they do not care what you think, they are going to heaven when they die.

  • Im gay but I support the WBC. Im glad my school's not like this!

  • If only schools like this were in the texas area. . .

  • Very Cool! What a wonderful example of leadership from the students, principle and everyone in-between. Wow! I'm really feeling hopeful about our future right now. Thanks to all!

  • I feel really sorry for the children of Westboro Baptist Church. Those kids never had a choice, but instead had all this hate crammed down their throats by these hate filled people who are their parents.

IMO this is a form of child abuse.

  • To the students of Gunn High, I'm so proud that human beings like you exist. You have given me some hope in humanity today! God bless!

  • There is still hope for humanity....

I think i love America again!

  • WBC pwnd.... Reason 1; ignorance 0

  • I hope we can reflect how this high school approached protesting the WBC. They're coming to my high school on Jun. 3. I'm really shocked that they choose my school out of all the other schools to protest. Lets just hope we can get our message of acceptance across ]:.

  • Way to go kids!!! You rock!!!

  • Way to go Gunn!

  • there coming to are high school on june 1st

  • WONDERFUL!

  • they came to our school almost 2 months ago.

i hope that hate group suffers.

  • That was awesome, good job Gunn.

  • kid at 1:10 is in my Tai Chi class haha, my bfs niece goes here so i know all about this, love the kids here

  • Absolutely right on! I love that people have beaten this crazy people at their own game, and have promoted peace and acceptance at the same time. I've been following the exploits for the WBC for some years now, just a little while longer than they started being in the spot light, and I've never seen something as amazing as this. I'm proud of those kids at Gunn. Good job, and way to lead by example.

  • This is the right way to do it. Show love, not hatred. They are sad people, led by an evil man who has brainwashed his children. Show love in return.

  • I bet if you keep great counterprotests like these up, the WBC children will start to envy your camaraderie. Once that happens, the strings tying them to the church will start to strain, and hopefully break.

  • Proud to be a Gunn Alumnae!

  • People like these kids give me hope for the world and for our future. Well done Gunn High. I'd never heard of you before, but you'll always be in my heart for what you've done. <3

  • You make the world proud guys, hope many other groups, specially young people follow your steps... greeting from Panama!!

  • I am so incredibly proud to be a student in the loving Gunn community.

  • @ajthegiraffe You make the world proud guys, hope many other groups, specially young people follow your steps... greeting from Panama!!

  • Gunn High school, you ROCK!! 1985 Gunn Alumni!..

  • Thanks for a most valuable lesson. I pray we learn it.

    God bless you

  • You guys rock! This is from a 62 year old Lesbian who is growing in pride in our country's young people! You are the best of the future. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • Im so proud of being a Gunn student.

  • As a former Gunn High student that graduated in 2003, I'm very happy to see this outpouring of support and I am proud to be an alumni. Go Gunn!

  • It's ironic how the Gunn students are holding up signs like "love thy neighbor", "mom loves our kids", signs with hearts on them, and the westboro people are holding up signs with with the words blood, beasts, hate, eating babies?. Isn't God love? I'm sure if God was looking at this, he would shake his head in disgust.

  • Wow...I would've totally done this too, with those students.

  • Great job you guys!! Man...wish I could've been there. Anyone know what happened to the Westboro Baptist Church people? ...Sometimes American ideals aren't exactly met. When that happens people fight, but I admire these kids for taking a peaceful stand.

  • Wow this is wonderful, I too have run into this rude hatefull people from WestBrook.

  • aw, amazing. thank you guys so much.

  • This is really amazing and uplifting. I wish my school was this cool.

  • wow! such a great video! I miss gunn a lot!

  • My dad is a 1971 graduate of Gunn High School. I am very proud of these young people. And so is my father.

  • Cheers and Kudos to All the Kids Who Stood Up For Themselves In the Face of Ignorance. It's Not Easy, But It's the Only (Right) Thing To Do. Didn't God Tell Us To Equally Love Our Neighbor and Our Enemy As One of Our Own?

  • Cheers and Kudos to All Who Stood Up For Themselves. It's Not Easy, But It's the Only (Right) Thing To Do

  • Talk about an igorant group of christian extremists.

Great job students, and I'm glad to know that there are HS staff and faculty that believe in and support their students.

  • hell yeah that school rocks

  • Absolutely fantastic. Proof that there are heroes today. Here is an entire school--and entire town--of them!!!

  • What an awesome school. Wish I had gone to a school like that when I was younger haha.

  • Gunn High School FTW.

These Teens have justified my faith in today's youth.

  • Wow this is great : ) I'm glad that the school took things in a positive way.

  • Bravo!!!!! This is what real AMERICA should be. You are the real america. I'm personally prould of you all. Drive away all haters, racists from America.

  • good job guys!!! just a little hate for anything is way too much.

  • I'm so proud of these kids! I'm thrilled that their school was so supportive and that they were able to organize a completely peaceful protest. I only hope more people can learn that this is a good response to hate.

  • Way to go Gunn !! Peace all .. =)

  • Wonderful - Great spirited kids , good versus evil or rather David Versus Goliath (but a tiny goliath that can be stepped on) You all did us all proud - be true to yourselves !!

We here in England are proud of you all ..

  • Awesome! :')

  • that's how to deal with a group that pickets at military funerals of homosexual servicemen. this almost made me cry. we, youth and young adults, are the future. they're right. acceptance not tolerance. they did an amazing job. come together as a community and through music and peace, send your message.

  • That looks so fun! :D

  • that is sooo cool, i wish more people would fight hate like this, its too bad that "so called chrisitans" act like this

  • I must say.....epic win. Thank god for these kids. Thank god! You guys proved that love is truly mightier than hate. God bless.

  • I must say.....epic win. Thank god for these kids. Thank god! You guys proved that love is truly mightier than hate. God bless.

  • To all who say ignore them: I say get real. That will never happen, and even if it did. I doubt the WBC would be deterred.

There should always be a counter--demonstration even if its not directly against them. Hold a rally that embraces unity and diversity. If the community ignores the WBC, the members of the community whom the WBC expresses hate towards might see this as apathy. What Gunn did was show those the WBC would oppress love and support, and that's what needs to be done every time.

  • Good job everyone for standing up to them!! Really effective!! I believe that diversity equals a loving community and that is exactly what you demonstrated!!

  • Wonderful! That's amazing. :) Sounds like you lot have a marvelous school and community.

  • im so proud of all of you students.if i could just mention all of your names, i would.you may be in the other part of the world, but your message echoes here in the philippines loudly. great job also to ms noreen likins. go girl! go gunn! Diversity. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

  • I am so incredibly proud to be a Gunn student.

  • Good for you guys! You demonstrated a loving, mature response that I don't think those people expected from high school students. Very, very well done, and so easy to see that it was genuine feelings and that your acceptance of each other is an every day acceptance and not just for show. Your community is obviously doing something right, and you guys are obviously a product of that. Celebrate your victory from March 30th, because you deserve it. :o)

  • Wow, that's awsomely cool... haha but what kinda hippie school is this??? lol... hope there are more of them!

  • Great Job! I really hate what those people at westboro baptist are doing...

  • LOVE it. they came to our school. i live in Key West and we have a very large gay community. the administrators let the students out early so the group would come to an empty school. the group leader talked on the radio and our DJ said "why don't you spend your time and money on feeding the hungry, or helping people in need? and the leader was speechless. i wish my community did this. its amazing!

  • this is why the bay area is awesome!

  • GOOD FOR YOU guys. You are a brilliant example to others of love and acceptance. Itawamba HS in Mississippi could learn a number of valuable lessons from you. You give me hope that the next generation will do us proud by promoting love and acceptance. Go on with yer bad selves! :D

  • I'm so proud of these young people! BRAVO! God bless you!

  • This is amazing. The way they "sang away" the hate group really was amazing. If you're trying to get rid of hate, what better way than with love? :) Great job.

  • This awesome. A huge thumbs up to the students and staff of Gunn.

  • What a great job by the kids of this high school - courageous, proud, and articulate. I hope the community's adults were listening!

  • Robert Frost said, "Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence." Well done students, faculty, and administration of Gunn High. Very seldom do we get to see adults modeling an appropriate, peaceful, positive solution these days. What wonderful students they have created.

  • The students become the teachers. All of you - your families, your staff, your community - are amazing, an example of how the world should be. Perhaps that's why the WBC exists: to bring us all into a more loving world.

  • What a fantastic video; great work Gunn students and teachers!! simply amazing to all who helped and participated!

  • amen!...almost bings me to tears!

  • Another excellent example of how to react to this.

WBC and groups like them are getting a different reaction now. the reaction that needs to be said.

Groups like WBC feed off of hate like a parasite. This sort of thing denies them of what they want/need and thus they have to go find another host. If this sort of thing is kept up, there will be fewer and fewer hosts for them to leech from.

  • I'm proud of Gunn students. All of you did a great job. Keep standing up for love and equality.

  • I'm a believer that the best way to deal with these people is to completely ignore them and let them wallow in their own misery and pathetic existence alone. However, I appreciate what this high school did here. They knew that it's virtually impossible to prohibit everyone from counter-protesting, so they prepared for it in an effective way. It's almost as good as completely ignoring them, and I think they did a great job.

  • Wow, way to go Gunn!

  • Wonderful job and sentiment everyone.... Bravo!

  • Wonderful job and sentiment everyone.... Bravo!

  • Those students and the teachers and adminstrators at Gunn are 12 kinds of AWESOME! Keep it up! You're all amazing!

  • this is awesome!!! go gunn!

  • After all the negative things that have been said of late, it's really good to see something so positive.

  • This is excellent!

  • hey gunn, y'all are awesome.

    xo

    kittee

  • beautiful

  • Thank God there are schools out there who openly encourage their students to STAND UP (peacefully!) for what they believe in!!!

  • I love this! These kids and the entire community knew it was important to take a stand, and to do it in a peaceful way. They definitely give me hope for the future :)

  • I love this! These kids and the entire community knew it was important to take a stand, and to do it in a peaceful way. They definitely give me hope for the future :)

  • I am so proud to be a Gunn student! Class of 2012!

  • I'm just proud of them as decent human beings... that was a really thoughtful and dignified way to approach people who obviously have no logic and think that their hate is disguised by religion.

  • Wow, that is awesome! :D Fight the hate with love!

  • This is the coolest student/faculty body ever.

I, honestly, wish I could go to this school. :)

  • beautiful

  • amazing! put a huge grin on my face

  • this is a wonderful thing, I wish my school was more like this!

  • This is great to see. It's nice to see peaceful ways of protesting acceptance. Ellen DeGeneres tweeted this just now. That's how I found out.

  • Even though i don't encourage the gay lifestyle at all. I really wish these people would not call themselves 'Baptists' because i'm Baptist and i don't think hating on people is right.

  • I am a Christian and this is NOT a church. I am embarrassed that they call themselves a church, and know that God DOES NOT agree with what they are doing. I actually believe it makes Him weep and is devastating to Him. I hope people out there know that this is NOT what a church is, and that they do not depict the true likeness of Christ!!
