  • what sort of pastels do you use ?

  • FUS RO DAH this shit.

  • The chalk will stick to any already painted horse? Do you spray something on the horse so the chalk remains on the horse, or is it just like that?

  • @samira5200hermi Gotta seal the dust with some sort of finish, like Matte Finish, otherwise the dust will fall off the horse.

  • could i use lacquer instead of matte finish? No one sells matte finish in the UK that i know of, but we have lots of lacquer in the shed lol!

  • @GoldAcresRanchBreyer I haven't tried lacquer before. If its glossy it might not work.

  • @GoldAcresRanchBreyer i live in the UK and i found an artists fixative called WINDSOR AND NEWTON ARTISTS FIXATIVE and it works real good. i got mine from hobbycraft (they have a website) but u can probably find it in good artist shops :)

  • For the final coat I like the Krylon satin finish. It is slightly glossy and looks like a real horse's sheen - not too much.

  • You do seem to have a bit of a metallic effect here. Are there pastels with this property, or did you have to add something else to achieve it?

  • ok so i have watched a few tutorials and like yours the best, i may buy some breyer stablemates of ebay and they are unpainted, could i do the pastels straight onto that, and also i dont have that spray stuff whatever you use after every layer of pastels, can i just use hairspray, and also my pastels are only lkerainbow colour with darker and lighter of the colours and white brown and black can i say mix some colours to gether like brown and red to get a nice bay colour? and white, black 4 grey

  • @startengo I always prime my horses to ensure that the pastels/paint will stick to it, if you don't the pastels may chip off after time. I've never tried hairspray but I doubt it would work as well as krylon matte finish. The krylon is meant to be long lasting while the hairspray is not and is intended to be washed out. You can get the colors you need from your pastel set, it will take a bit of experimenting but it is possible.

  • i thank u very much for ur awsome videos on how to pastel i have started pasteling now and i will be selling stablemates on my channel soon

    thanks again

  • it looks like,..by far....the best way to paint a horse...very natural looking..

  • do you add a little bit of water to the pastels?

  • @turtlespet no

  • beautiful

  • how does the chalk stick? Does is just... STICK LOL I'm a newby at customizing breyers and I REALLY want to try and that horse looks great by the way =)

  • @twosheas It sticks to primer and matte finish but only so much dust will stick before you have to spray another layer of matte finish.

  • @SaturnineStudios oh thanks!

  • omg in the light he turns purple AWESOME!!

  • it must be chalk pastel i cant use another pastel???

  • @RODOULA7 Only chalk, oil ones don't work at all.

  • where would you get the pastel chalk and the paint brushes i want to add some shading to my models.

  • @scootnlouis I get them at my local art store. If you don't have one nearby they're available online.

  • when ever I seal my breyer with the matte finish, It earases ALL my work! Like I lighten it a bit and I spray It and it goes darka gain!! :( HELP PLEASE!

  • how do you know which pastel colours make for instance a bay colour? and what sort of colour is it on the model you are pastelling there?

  • @ILPonies99 I just study reference pictures and mix different pastels to get the colors I want. It helps to record what colors you mix for each layer so next time you paint that color you have a formula.

  • wow thanku for making this. so every different layer of pastels do u have to spray a coat of matte finish? and as i dont like in the US, i live in the UK, i cant really find a matt efinish spray, is matte laquer ok?

  • instead of matte finish could you use krylon crystle clear?

  • @breyerbaby123 No, the pastels don't stick to the crystal clear very well.

  • How do you do shading?

  • @SeabiscuitForEva Start with the lightest color and slowly build up the color in places its darker.

  • @SaturnineStudios Oh thanks:)

  • why do you have to apply krylon matte finish?

  • @XxBreyerHorsexX It seals the pastels so dust doesn't just rub off when you touch the horse.

  • @SaturnineStudios Oh, now I understand! Thank you! :)

  • ohhh no wonder it would rub off onto my hands when i'd pick it up!! i never sealed it! this really helps!

  • can you use other kinds of clear sprey?

  • @breyernakotalover I've heard testor's dull coate works good but I haven't tried it.

  • I use "PAINTER'S TOUCH satin" and for a primer I use "REMCLAD RUST PAINT"

  • Could I spray each layer with Krylon workable fixatif?

  • @JavaPony25 I've tried the workable fixatif and found that the pastels don't stick to it very well because its too glossy. The Krylon matte is the best stuff to use because it gives more surface texture for the pastels to stick to.

  • Really helpful, thanks for sharing. :)

  • where can I find those makeup applicators you used instead of a q-tip? what are they called? Thanks :)

  • @illuminatedface i got mine from walmart! i get everything there. theyre primer and matte finish are about $3. instead of $8 at michaels. and they also carry great brushes!

  • I'd like to see it when it's done :P it's really good!

  • I soo want to do this now! I have 2 customs already... Well... One. The other is still in prgress & I'm running out of paint! DX

This looks more fun anyway! I'm so going to beg my mom to get me these pastel thingies. :P What brand do you use?

  • gorgeous horse very good job

  • How long does it take you to do that!?!?! Not long, yeah? Do you do this to most of your horses? You should take them to the Breyer fest!!!

  • Do you seal it after?

  • Yes, with krylon matte finish.

  • can u just put that pastle stuff on and leave it or would it come off, will i have to buy a varnish thingy

  • Krylon matte finish seals the pastels. I use it between every layer.

  • @SaturnineStudios thax, also while i'm asking, do u know how people get that thin white layer just after a sock or face marking? u know where it fades away

  • For that I paint the solid white sock, then when its dry go in with really watered down white paint that's transparent and make an even line around the marking.

  • what does commision mean??

  • Any ideas for my stablemate??? goto my wall and post an idea

  • I better quit watching this... too inspiring when you have no time to work this in a busy day

  • hey how much are cm prices

  • What is the brand of pastels you use? I can't really find what colours.

  • I use the Alphacolor Earthtones set, it has a most of the colors you need for horses.

  • Thanks so much! =D You are so helpful! =D

  • please respond!!

  • how much was the spray-on top coat and where did you get it???

  • Its around $7 at Micheal's craft store.

  • hello this is ilovemyperchron from Devientart

wow i like your breyer and thanks for telling

me how to do this <3

  • can you make a tutorial on how to do dapples.

    (please respond)

  • I'm still struggling with dapples myself though I will make a tutorial when I feel I've mastered them.

  • thx

cause ime gonna customize some stablemates and i want to do a dappled black. -thx again

  • do you have to tak the paint off while your shadowing? And is it harder for different molds? like, Newsworthy, or cefnaokpark (juming) (glossey) Bouncer?

  • I only strip the paint on horses that have previously been customized. Normally I prime over the original finish so I have a nice white surface to paint on.

  • so every time you add a layer you need to spray with workable fixative every time ?

  • wat is the clear spray paint called?????

  • Krylon Matte Finish

  • o ok great idea thx 4 the help!

  • i have a question .when u do ur pasteling do u paint the mane and tail with acrylics or do u pastel that 2?

  • I paint the mane and tail in acrylics and usually shade with pastels over that.

  • Did you do this bay in one sitting? Or several?

  • Several. I can paint an entire horse in one day if I don't stop but I don't have enough time to do that anymore.

  • is it normal for like.. the stuff to bubble up all weird?...and like if i barly touch it by accident th primer and everything comes off ._.

  • I've never heard of it doing that. Your primer might be having a reaction to the pastels.

  • i think it have that fixed lol..the first horse i did i went by how long the can said to let the primer set..for like 5 hours...then i did another one..and let it sit over night..and it only did it alittle thennnn i did anotherrr onee..and i let it sit all weekend and it didnt do it at all lol

  • Hey you are really good! Ermm, I was wondering, what like is the name of your pastel set? I was looking at your tutorials and your set of colours looks really good = ]

  • I use the Alphacolor Earthtones set. Its the absolute best set for painting horses because it has all the colors you need.. except gray.

  • umm..i tried this and it didnt work. i dont think i hav the right pastels....they came out in chunks and they were like sticky almost :S can you help me?

  • Sounds like you might have been using oil pastels. It won't work if they can't be shaved into a chalky dust.

  • The matte spray is sold at art stores.

  • can u use a ear swab if u dont have whatever u used in the beginning.

  • Yeah, that works too.

  • Hi! I have watched your videos and I am about to start my own model...wish me luck!! :-) Wondering though, what kind of spray primer do you use? The ones I found at my craft store only have prmer for wood, nothing for plastic. Any ideas?

  • The primer I use is Rustoleum, I got it at a hardware store. The wood primer would probably work but a multipurpose one might be better.

  • Dose it come off? i would like to know

  • It won't if you seal it.

  • oh man - where did you get your earth tones pastel set?! I even went to an art store and they just had the general selection sets... very tricky... Also, I can never seem to get my blacks dark enough - like on the legs. But you do a beautiful job! keep up the good work!!

  • can u tell me what brand of pastels u use i am considering gettting some also the brushes u were useing

  • I use the Alphacolor Earth Tones set, it has great colors for horses. The brushes are just regular watercolor brushes, q-tips also work great.

  • Are there any other sprays that you can use to seal the dust?

I have one called ""tuffilm final fixative" It can be used pastel charcoal and pencil.

  • I've only tried the Krylon but the one you have sounds like it might work as long as its not glossy.

  • y cant u use glossy? can u use krylon Satin Sealer?

  • Doyou now how to make dapples? I really want to make a horse with dapples, but it is not working that well...

  • about how many layers?

  • It really depends on the color. I've done some horses in 5 layers and others in nearly 20.

  • OK I was worried it was going to be like 100. You do such a good job

  • What do you spray on the horse before you make a new lair? hairspray?

  • No, you use matte finish

  • how do you make sure the pastel dust stays on?

  • Some of the dust sticks to the matte surface on the horse. Then once its sealed its stuck.

  • I like this way and all, but I like Spraying them better. Check out my CM's.

  • your very good at this, i watched all of your tutorials and i am gonna try to customize a classic that i am getting in a trade. (if prefect because it has a broken tail, some rubs and a chipped ear)

  • In other videos you said you could carve out hoves and reshape your breyer horses and everything, you should make a video on how to do that.

  • Your a Great Teacher : ) I Can't Do It Because I Don't Feel Like Buyign It All XD!!

  • so what sealer do you use, are there any other types you cna use? cause im planning on making my frist custum, but i don't know what sealer, and i live in austrealia so i have no idea what type

  • I think the one she used is Krylon Matte Finish Spray..Its on my wishlist along with the painters touch primer and alphacolour earthtone pastels. And stablemates XD

  • can u use oil pastels or is it chalk pastels

  • Only chalk. Oil pastels don't work too well. XD

  • lol yeah i know that now and does it mader on what kind of brushes u use

  • can you suggest any sealer?? they don't sell matte sealer in Ireland. i tryed to pastel one of mine, but th dust won't hold, is there a certain type of pastel, or is the chalk pastel im using fine??? does it have to have primer on it first?? plz reply!! =]

  • yer the don't sell matte sealer in Wales either! i had to buy some stuff called Flat something or other

  • is it ALL pastels or did you use a little paint? Im gonna try to do one!

  • so basically do you just add loads adn loads and loads of layers of pastel dust and what was the stuff you have to go and buy to keep teh layers stuck on.... and was that on a classic model

  • If you don't want it pement can you apply the pastel but when you get sick of it then can it come of?

  • No, once you seal it then its stuck.

  • can pastel dust come of if you dont seal them?

  • Yes, it must be sealed.

  • Thanks never have heard of the pastel dust as I am new to pastels.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Great Tutorial! I've done two Breyers in pastels using your tutorials, and they look awesome! I am so excited to do more!

The fourth one isn't out yet but I'm working on it.

  • how can u re-sculpt a breyer? like im trying to acculy MAke a breyer but i want to re-sculpt first

  • You need to use apoxie sculpt and a heat gun

  • can you use pastel dust on Schleich horses cause i really want to change their color

  • Yes you can! But I've noticed they get get sticky after a while

  • aww man! do you know what paint they use on Schleich horses

  • do u offer customizing services?

  • im sorta done pasteling my breyer, what do i do net? just seal it then be done, or paint it? i would like it if you could make a video of what u do after your done pasteling

  • You can seal it and then use acrylic paint for any white markings you want to add and eyes

  • Um, an ok video. You forgot to tell everyone to check for the loose dust and grains in all places (especially between legs) before they spray each layer with fixatif.

  • what hapens if you dont like it can you take it off your breyer

  • You can with nail polish remover but its quite a pain XP

  • that's so good

  • how many layers? im trying to do a chestnut right now but it's soooooooooooo hard!

  • it depends, like when you do tones and shadows

  • i love the color before u started the vidn pasteling it was pretty

  • Is it hard?Because I might do that with one of my model horses!

  • EVERY ONE SAYS THINGS DIFFERENTLY! my friend says Melk instead of Milk. a girl in school says Laygs instead of Legs. it dosnt matter how we talk, just watch the damn video and deal!

  • I say bleshoo instead of bless you lol

  • haha niiice XP

when i sneeze it sounds like im saying blachooie lmao

  • cuz im not going to do it until the tutorial is over lol

  • can u do 3 noww please

  • Hello i have a question for you,now when you shave the Pastels and put it on does it always work when u put it on?also whats the stuff you spray?

  • PLEASE do 3 now

  • can u get all the stuff at micheals likeEVERYTHING you need?

  • You can find mostly everything there, I had to get my pastels at an art store.

  • That's really nice. I do customs also using an airbrush and some pastels but want to do some in all pastels. You video helps show me how it's done. Thanks!

  • ts a beuty!!!!!! would you do a custom one and sell it???? i'll pay anythin for one that looks like my horse

  • where can i buy the spray?

  • I get mine at craft stores, usually Michaels

  • does it stay without the coating?

  • After a while it stops sticking so yeah you have to spray it before you do another layer.

  • o ok thanks 4 the info

  • when i have my horse preped i usially paint the eyes black and then after im done with my horse the eyes turn a cool color like a brownish black its really neat !

  • Thats a really good idea! :P Everybody is always finding new was of painting them!! and its great you share your ideas too! :)

  • thanks , i just find that is adds some natural color to the eyes and makes them kind of noticable

  • Thanks!

  • can you make the littlest budwiser clydesdale?

  • wen does the 3'rd kome out???

  • KOOL! i luv it! does it stcik then? like not rub? b/c i play with my breyers sometimes...

  • I was espeirmenting with sidewalk chalk on a model horse.

What's the difference? They are both chalk, why does one stick and one not? Do you do dust, finish, dust, finish? PM me please..

  • cool! ive always wondered how you blended colors and stuff on a model!

  • Is the dust mixed with water?

  • Nope, its just dry =)

  • what do you use to get white marking on the horse like stocking on the legs?

  • paint

  • Do you do their I's in paint???

  • Yeah, the eyes and white markings are done in acrylic paint
