They both sound great, I do feel there's a little more "honk" in the Hgw61.. Not sure hat that means, haha, but there's something in that tone that feels like a vintage National.. I use D, C, F, G, sometimes open E and A.
Thanks Bottleneck John. Savage picking, sounds quality! Could you recommend a few tunes that I could start off with? I'm playing open D at the moment on a stock guitar. I can jam for hours but don't know any songs. Thanks.
Hey John - Thanks for sharing your immense talent & love of the resonator! I am a multi-instrumentalist, looking to pick up a new instrument & have settled on the res. I think Republic is the brand for me - best bang for the buck, but am struggling with the Resolian vs. Highway 61. You seem to prefer the 61, but your videos have me hearing more balance out of the Resolian. Which one would you recommend for a beginner who will only have one in his arsenal? HELP!
im naturally a percussionist, but im wanting to be able to play guitar like this, how could i learn fairly easily? also, where is a good place to get a resolian for cheap?
It'll take you 10 minutes to get started with the basics of slide playing! And a lifetime to master it, LoL! (I read that somewhere..)
It is really easy to tune your guitar to open G and try the 3 chords, what's more difficult is the pressure you need apply on the strings with the slide. And intonation is by ear and it'll take a while to get your hearing to collaborate with your muscles..
Get an instructional DVD by Bob Brozman or Steve James, they are really helpful!!
Thanks for showing us this. I'm thinking of getting one. Can you describe the basic difference in tone between a steel bodied and brass bodied resolian please. It's hard to tell from the vids.
that is one bitchin' little guitar by the way... some killer tones you're wrenching out of it too, fella... the sooner i get my grubby little mitts on one of those the better... coz that's the kinda guitar i like, tiny with an awesome sound... and that looks a mint example by the way... is it just a standard model?? i dig it and your playin' bro... the pair of you rock...
I've looked at both the vid's with the resolian and i find its sound to be somewhat more agressive with the brass slide, killer tone!!!!!!
Strange question maybe but how tall are you? Might give me an estimate of how big the guitar is (or how small) ,i own some OM models but they seem slightly bigger in the upper area of the guitar where the resolian seems more slim.
Ah ok i use a brass one myself wich i sanded a bit rough to get a more dirty slidesound, i'm more a fan of the rough sounds
Ok thanks, your about 10 centimeters taler that i am but i can get a pretty good impression on the size, i know it features the mesurements at the end but i dont know how to calculate inces to centimeters so thats why i asked.
I like my Om Famos (kind of old dutch stella) because its small size so i know i'll like the size and if it sounds like this i'm very happy!
Agree! Whaddaya think.... I reckon its the tuning, actually. I play "G" and "D" tunings and I love glass in "G" but always use Brass in "D". Feel or just sound, Brass is great for attack, in my humble opinion.
Damn ya, John, now I gotta find some Bronze!
Disaster last week. Broke headstock on my small Dobro clone, so a new guitar is coming from Texas! Just don't tell my wife!!
I will purchase the wood or steel parlor Republic for travel but I am not sure which. I am looking for versatility. Any thoughts would be REALLY appreciated! Your playing is inspirational by the way!
Good choice!! You'll be happy with either one, the wood model is of course much lighter to carry around..
You'll find a fatter tone and more volume in the steel body!!
It's a matter of taste..
I like both very much since I've been a fan of parlorguitars and resophonics for many years and now when there's parlor-reso's, it's THE perfect combination for me!!!!
Thanks for the nice comments, I'm happy to be a source of inspiration to you!!!!
Want one!
This or a republic 61
Which sounds best?
Awesome playing!
D tuning?

@toddallenhooper I own one and it does not feel cheap. I was surprised how much this lil guitar weighs.
drewmath100 8 months ago
Does this "feel" like a nice guitar, or does it feel cheap? I know the price is WAY cheaper, but tone wise does a National really blow this away?
toddallenhooper 10 months ago
@toddallenhooper
Not cheap in any way, it's a good little guitar with a big, loud voice!

Nice comment, I appreciate it!!
The Highway 61 is more of a travel guitar..
An awesome instrument indeed but if you're looking for ONE reso to own I'd go for the Resolian!!!
It's more of a normal guitar for the beginner, easier to play with a "normal" scale length..
If you travel a lot or want the smallest reso possible, go for the Highway 61!!
BottleneckJohn 1 year ago
Thanks for the confirmation, John. I just called Frank & my Resolian is being shipped.

sorry, can you also play some folk songs whit this kind of guitars? ( I mean, with resonator guitars...) or just bottleneck stuff?
buddaski 2 years ago
You can play anything you'd like on these!!
As long as you dig the tone.

whats its the tuning ???

It's G tuning here!
BottleneckJohn 2 years ago
Is this a single cone? And is there a way to just look at a reso and tell if its spider, tricone ore single cone? Thanks.
ShanoBauer 2 years ago
Yes! This is a singlecone, also known asa "biscuit-bridge".. The spider "Dobro" system is also a single cone but it's reffered to as "spider-bridge".
It's quite easy to see what resonator system a guitar has, search the web for the different types and you'll get the idea pretty quick!!

And a wonderfull travel guitar too!....You are very inspiring...Cheers

Would you have some kind of a pickup on this for a gig or would you mike it?
rip1957 2 years ago
I never use a pickup live, I play into a microphone, a good condenser is what a prefer!
Never had any troubles with feedback..
Sure a pickup can be useful but not if you want acoustic tone!!
BottleneckJohn 2 years ago
Thanks for showing us this. I'm thinking of getting one. Can you describe the basic difference in tone between a steel bodied and brass bodied resolian please. It's hard to tell from the vids.
smojomusic 3 years ago
Well, in theory, the brass body should be somewhat less "harsh" in tone. More mellow..
This is not always true though..
It also depends on which slide is used and strings and picks and.. Etc, LoL!!
I use to say that for raw delta blues, go for a steel body, brass tends to be more "allround"!!
BottleneckJohn 2 years ago
Thanks for replying. The steel one was my first choice. Just need to save for it now.
smojomusic 2 years ago
is that a full sized one, also has any one heard of Rally guitars? im wondering weather or not to get one. cheers
slothgogs 3 years ago
Smaller than a "standard"size reso..

trk1050 3 years ago

Steel not brass in this one!

FraJa1980 3 years ago
I agree, the metal slide gives a "rougher" sound.. (This is bronze actually, not brass..)
A glass slide is more mellow and "sweet" sounding to my ears!
Haha, how tall I am?!
Well, I'm 186 cm above the ground..
The specs for the Resolian is at the end of the clip..
This is smaller than a OM-size, more of a "parlor size" guitar, small, narrow body..
I love these small guitars!!
BottleneckJohn 3 years ago
Ah ok i use a brass one myself wich i sanded a bit rough to get a more dirty slidesound, i'm more a fan of the rough sounds

Easy to compare and see the different sizes!!

How much weight is this resonator compared to the Relic tricone reso?
And nice playing mate.
BlindLemonJR 3 years ago
Thanks!!
Well, I don't know the weight of the tricone but I can say this have to be lighter since less sheet metal is used for the smaller body..
I can put it on a scale later on!! :)
BottleneckJohn 3 years ago
Thanks guys!!!
The body size makes it very comfortable to play! It costs $629 with case..
