Neither is Sidney, and people call him Sid. All the Pens players have nicknames for each other...fans aren't the only ones to call him Geno. Gonchar is Sarge or Gonch, Fleury is Flower, Letang is Tangers or Legend, they used to call Malone Bugsy, Colby Armstrong was Army, and so on.

It's just an endearing name, nothing more.

Basically because geni sounds silly lol. It's a nickname though, it's not meant to be taken seriously. Players, fans, coaches, broadcasters all call him Geno, I doubt he minds too much.
