Listen to the words in this song and then listen to the words in Bonnie Tylers cover of "The Rose"; the stark contrast of lyrics tells me that man is unfulfilled no matter what he does or does not do.
@1950oldman1 I think there's no person over 50 that this song doesn't apply to. We all have regrets, I know I do. This is my favourite song and I cry every time I hear it.
Splendid, wonderful music rendered by an excellent talent. I am an old man now and I could relate to this song very, very well. Thanks to the person who put this song in You Tube.
One of my mom's all time favorite songs. She used to hum this around the house and think back on her own life I'm sure...and now she's gone but the memory of her humming along remains so precious to me. Missing you and thinking about you every day mom.
I love this song! it makes one think of choices made in life and what you'd do differently, sadly life is not a dress rehersal and one can't undo what's been done...
if the people that "dislike" this beautiful song would just take the time to read some of the response's from the many people wise in their age here, perhaps they could see that life is short, we are not promised tomorrow, maybe they could keep from making the same mistakes that some of us have...
I just heard this song and I swear I can honestly say this is so beautiful and Roy Clark has an awesome voice. I can't stop listening to the words......
I guess the point is to not live this way and to live like someday you will look back at your life for at least a moment to stop and analize youself in a light you have withheld from yourself: the light of criticism for waste of self and others. such a haunting and truthful song.........to remind us of our lives past....but fear not age......one is only old, when one's regrets begin to take the place of one's dreams.
@MrGermanyjon I have been listening to this song since I was a small child,my father ,may he rest in peace ,had me listen to it.Roy Clarke was a great talent written off as some kind of clown,a very talented man,who was thrown away by the music establishment,a damned shame.
he is a great musician but also is a plagiarist, because this song is a identic copy from the song of a band called "los iracundos" the name of the song is "Puerto Montt" and was written 2 years before this one. i m sorry my english is very poor. but this is truth you cant find the song and you see.
@alej4ndr0101 there is a slight resemblance! but I dont think so. La Plaga is "Good golly miss molly" by little richard, there is a resemblemce in all songs this man wasnt copying anyone. He has a natural talent, may god bless him and thank him for all the pleasure he bought to all his fans. specially between spanish and english music I can sit here and name you 20 that are the same in different languages!
@alej4ndr0101 no way is this the same song as Puerto Montt.....I just listened to that song, it's not even close. And I'm not seeing any resemblance in the lyrics, either.
Remember this song as a child. Step-Dad & The Country Music Awards. A True Classic! & Yes Roy Clark sang it best. Gives us a reason to reflect & realize just how short life is & how quickly time passes us by. Then we wake up & realize shoulda woulda coulda! Put the regrets aside & act upon them. Life is just too short!
The Baseball great Mickey Mantle loved this song.He felt that it explained his life...He had met Roy and asked him to sing this song if he were to die..Roy said okay, but felt it was more of a polite but not serious request.. When Mickey was dying he called Roy and spoke with him..Roy sang this song at Micks funeral, not a dry eye in the place..Class just class.
I remember when a friend of mine was dying in a hospital, just before he died there was a look of complete peace on is face he sat up and said the following- This life is all about love and forgiving. That is why we are all here, to learn this. He then died. Yesterday when i was young- I hope I will learn this as I go through life.
Back in the 70's a fellow US Navy Sailor and Hospital Corpsman and I used to write letters home from the Ships medical office while listening to Roy Clark on tape. Seems like yesterday and not nearly 40 years ago.
Interprétation pleine de sincérité et de sensibilité. Il ne faut pas oublier que si cette chanson nous émeut c'est dû aussi à la qualité de la composition originale signée Charles Aznavour.
Wow... One of those moments where you know you came across something truly meaningful. I'm not well versed in American music and I am so so grateful to have found this, especially at age 20, when I'm still young... Just awestruck... completely.

@johnnieonenote1 God bless you, just remember the times you were a blessing to someone who never would have made it otherwise, you were the angel of their day. No one is an island, our lives, are all so entwined, we all done bad on this Earth, but we all did good too. God bless you.

This song will always have a connection with every generation because everyone can relate to it at some point in their within there experiences. I feel the song was made for him !!!.
This is the best song....I lived it a long time ago, and at 60 years of age find I am still living it. Funny how things don't turn out like we think they should....but when listening to these words, you can see why they don't. I will always think of this as "my" song........
This is a wonderful, gut-wrenching song, and I think that it is good to reflect on past rights and wrongs. That is how we learn. That being said, all we have is now. Make each failure a success by learning something from it and not repeating it. I love the saying from Glenn Close in the movie The Natural when her character says something to the effect that we have two lives - the one we learn with and the one we live with afterward.
@BrooksRobby5 Aren't you a little immature? Some people really know how to be funny, but rarely is it 5th Grade humor. Stick to body function stuff but keep it at school.
I'm 30 years old right now, and although I know that sounds young to some, I spent the last TEN years as a go-nowhere drunk. I have accomplished nothing of any signifigance in the last TEN YEARS! Ten years multiplied by 365 is 3650 days wasted being a bum. I keep going back to this song, and it keeps making me cry. I had youth and i wasted it in the worst ways. Time can never be replaced.
You're right. It can never be replaced. But are you going to waste ten more years beating yourself up for it? Yea, it's a heavy load to carry when you finally realize what it was that YOU threw away. I've been there too, bro. But that was over twenty years ago, now. (I'm 51) I'll leave you with a quote I like; Yesterday is past. It's history. Tomorrow is unknown. It's a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's 'The Present.' Take care of yourself.
I don't care if people say I'm way to "outdated" and "boring". I listened to this song when I was 13, now I'm 15 and I don't give a damn about what those people think. This song truly touches the lives of my grandfather and father. I am really proud to be able to listen this at 15. I still highly favor music such as "Yesterday" by Roy Clark rather than artists such as Lady Gaga, etc. May music live forever...
@Revan109625 Hey....I am 55 now....almost 56 and I bought this album when I was your age....I loved it and I still do...You just do your own thing...Be who you are...everyone else seems to don't they? :-)
@Revan109625 Hey....I am 55 now....almost 56 and I bought this album when I was your age....I loved it and I still do...You just do your own thing...Be who you are...everyone else seems to don't they? :-)
@Revan109625 I saw this when it originally aired on Hee Haw. I was about 12 or so. Roy Clark should be regarded as a national treasure and I don't even listen to much country music. Wonderful singer and performer and give this man props for being a top-notch guitarist who could rival Santana, Clapton or any of the others. I'm 48 now and live a good life with few regrets but this song still touches nerves. Rock on, Revan.
@Revan109625 If I had used language like that at 15 my Dad would have skinned me. What will your kids think is acceptable language when they are your age?
You're lucky to be 15 with a whole world of great music out there. When I was 15, it was 1968, and altho' I listened to the Beatles and everything of "my generation", it was cool to hear all the stuff from the 40s and 50s that my parents listened to. Big Band, Elvis, good old rock and roll... there is SO MUCH fabulous music to chose from. Have fun!
@Revan109625 I heard this when I was about seven years old, with my parents when we attended one of Roy's concerts. Although I love all of his music, his poignant soulful songs are the ones that I remember most of all, especially this and Right or Left at Oak Street. Roy was great at cramming a lot of emotion into a few words.
Now I'm 44 and this song reminds me of how few regrets I've had so far in life. It's a happy song for me now. Roy Clark sure was one of the greats!
it feels good to know this song has reached a young kid in this day and age . this kind of music is what the kids of today are missing . the reason is debatable but the fact is not . will we ever hear music with substance again or is it frozen in time ?
@Revan109625 Revan, You are truly Very wise! Keep that wonderful attitude! Live your life to the Fullest!! Don't be saying in your older years that this song was sung for you! The years have flown by for me! I can say this song fits me very well. And it hurts. Now I want to make it up somehow. Don't ever change that wonderful attitude that you have. I'm sure your father and grandfather are very proud of you. May you experience the best of everything -always! And keep favoring this music!
@Revan109625 an open mind is a good thing...i like roy and lady gaga. There are good songs from all generations if you just weed through the crap you can find the good stuff from beethoven to nine inch nails
@groovysherrie65 I love this song of ROY CLARK: I cry every time I hear this song, though I am an Arab, I cant forget this song and cant FORGET ( ROY CLARK ); God bles ROY, I LOVE the USA, Thank you (ROY) !!!!!!
@TheBushidoSword It's greatly reassuring to hear that an Arab, a Muslim I presume, is moved by this song. A retired Catholic priest from Canada. After all, it seems we are "on the same page". And you love America; Me too! Thanks.
By far the Most Meaningful Roy Clark Song of all time........It shows how many Imitators there are of this song.......Written and Sung by Roy Clark...
For me this song reminds me of this I *didn't* do up until now (I'm 37). And it sparks me on to try to do everything I want to do before I get old (and hope to heck none of it leaves me unsatisfied! LOL) even if it does, all that matters is that I did it. :)
This song always brings tears to my eyes, but only Roy's version.

Stick to body function stuff but keep it at school.

everyone wants to change their past - fix their mistakes. I regret some things, but those mistakes helped shape what I am today, I love this song.

I remember hearing this song in the 70's, I loved it, but I didn't really take it to heart. That was yesterday when I was young...

@TheBushidoSword It's greatly reassuring to hear that an Arab, a Muslim I presume, is moved by this song. A retired Catholic priest from Canada. After all, it seems we are "on the same page". And you love America; Me too! Thanks.

For me this song reminds me of this I *didn't* do up until now (I'm 37). And it sparks me on to try to do everything I want to do before I get old (and hope to heck none of it leaves me unsatisfied! LOL) even if it does, all that matters is that I did it. :)
