  • Anyone else think David Steele looks like an evil goblin in the opening sequence?

  • This is the moment when hope finally arrived and by God we needed it. God bless you Thazza!

  • THATCHR = CUNT

  • @BRUTUALTRUTH

    You = clueless moron

  • @403766 You Tory homo!

  • Best opening theme the BBC'a election coverage has ever included, pity the outcome wasen't desirable through

  • So futuristic!!!

  • The Alliance consisted of limp-wristed Liberal weirdo's, trying to escape their inevitable voyage to political extinction. And Labour rats whom had no courage for hanging around tiill Kinnoch finally did what Calllaghan wanted to do: purge the Labour Party of the looney left, militant tendency etc as Wilson was unable to do.

The fateful decision to have 2 leaders . . .Steele and Owen with his ego, did for the alliance. The Alliance also sold out to the EU . .old "Woy" Jenkins was a tosser.

  • Wonderful theme music: Rick Wakeman from the King Arthur album.

  • VOTE BNP

  • @sameoldfitup2008 Fuck off racist twat

  • This election gave Britain it's 2nd greatest Prime Minister, after Churchill of course!

  • Brilliant video BTW. Brings back so many memories. It seems so long ago but also seems like yesterday.

    Sheer quality.

  • God Bless and long live Mrs Thatcher, 79 a great year for the UK

  • As Loasdamoney said (IIRC), great Prime Minister but I wouldn't want to shag it.

  • cyril smith was at 56

  • Oh Jim, why didnt you call the election a year earlier -it could have all been so different!

  • Agreed. Callaghan should have called the election in 1978. Then we might have avoided the nightmare of Thatcherism.

  • He wasn't goping to win a majority in 78, it would have been a neck-and-neck hung result like first-74, and his choice was because the Social Contract with the unions had collapsed. Been destroyed by the Trots, to be exact. He was trapped by the unions who were going to make no pay agreements after an election and all strike for as much as they could. He was right to decide against 78 hoping to make the unions need to take him more seriously, Thatcherism was the autocratic militants' fault.

  • the unionists, especially the ones from the left, are stupid and have no idea how a economy works.

  • And about a million times worse! The UK would have become a Soviet satellite!

  • Blimey! whose the fat guy at 0.56?

  • Sir Cyril Smith, still a Liberal heavyweight today.

  • What a load of crap! Human League's the Mirror Man didn't come out in '79 it was released in '82! And some of those pictures you showed were actually from the 1987 election, At least you could have got the music right! You clearly are not old enough to even remember 1979.

  • Well, I made the video many years ago, with the original intension to make Michael Foot the Mirror Man (because he's a peoples' fan), and that would have fitted in much better with the date the song was released, however, it was very difficult to come across footage of Mr.Foot, so I decided to experiment with 1979 General election. You are wrong, however, there is no footage from the 1987 election but there is from the 1983 election (linking it to the original Michael Foot design).

  • @flametaledfox Hey, ignore grumpy draws. I was alive in 79 and an active Labour Party member - it's a good effort. The music is wrong but hey ho - the pix are great.

  • @MrTonymcmahon Thanks

  • @UKSazzy67 the song fits well with any election video...i love it!!!

  • @UKSazzy67 This becomes a load of crap because the song that goes with it is 3 years younger? Congratulations, Sir, you possess the unique ability to live without having a life.

  • who was the fat fuck?

  • what a great day this was!

  • There was I, waiting at the church!!!!! I know it was political suicide not to go to the country in 1978, but Jim's singing made up for it!!!!

  • Oh dear Jim you should have gone to the poll in autmum 78 and then we wouldnt have had Thatcher bringing this country to its kness

  • Such a shame for the National Front though, I feel so sorry for them

  • Jesus look at him at 1:20 no wonder Maggie won with a Landslide god bless her!

  • Yes, God bless, I am sure it was God's will to ruin the British economy so that you only have unproductive retail and parasitical financial sectors remaining.

And as for conservatism, the crime rate doubled, illegitimacy skyrocketed (when you destroy stable jobs you create chavdom) and church attendance plummeted.

  • maxime, I do not think you understand Politics at all. Margaret Thatcher saved Britain. She curbed trade unions made Britain entrepreneurial and made us a competitive country to do business. You cannot blame a government for Crime Rates. People who commit crimes should have the book thrown at them as far as I am concerned. People who worked in the mines and Ship Yards were going to nothing else in there lives. She give them the chance to do something different apart from safe jobs!

  • I don't think you understand Economics at all. Britain became very entrepreneurial. But eventually you cannot trade paper and foreign products on the basis of nothing!

Maggie destroyed your industry. This created ghost towns and despair. This created chavs and crime and moral decay. Got it?

Of course you can blame a government (or sometimes, lack thereof) for crime rates. Don't be ridiculous. Otherwise, we would only have private police forces (maybe in 50 years, we will).

  • Trip, it's you who doesn't understand politics. In your first comment you imply that Heseltine won the election single-handedly due to his good looks. Back then, politics wasn't about good looks, it was about policies and ideals... Something your Tory chums fail to notice in this age of political stagnation.

  • I think you'll find the roots of 'chavdom' go further back than Thatcher, and it's wrong to blame her. As for church attendance, it's good we have more rational people who are not prepared to sit for hours listening to someone talking about something that isn't there.

  • If it is more rational for people to not go to church, then do tell me why these Britons are usually less rational people than those who do attend. Crime up, alcohol consumption up, narcotics up, ASB up, church down.

And why do I hear the dumbest atheist arguments coming from the UK? e.g., "If a loving God existed, why are there tragedies"...few Americans are so stupid to say something so shallow.

  • If a loving God existed, the Bible would be completely different, but that's for another time.

And I wouldn't necessarily say that not going to church is the reason that people drink more, commit crime more etc. Sitting in font of an old man whining on about a guy in the sky who doesn't exist every sunday morning is hardly likely to stop one having a punch-up in the street after drinking half a bottle of Vodka, is it?

  • reversing the hopelessness your country has created since thatcher will stop one drinking vodka on the street (that, and maybe forbidding drinking vodka on the street + enforcement) ... religion should be a part of that, not the only solution.

The Old Testament can admittedly lead to doubts about God's character, but I dare you to show the expression of God's supposed unloving nature in the (wholly Christian) New Testament.

  • Perhaps they would drink less vodka if they didn't have the knowledge that the poisonous welfare state was there to cosset them if things go wrong.

And I'm not going to start trying to prove the nature of God's character any more than I would try to prove Father Christmas's. Both have a similar footing in reality. Either way it's funny that God suddenly becomes a more kindly and pleasant chap in the second half of the world's greatest novel: split personality, perhaps, or a replacement?

  • But your welfare state was there in the 50s, 60s, 70s, probably more strongly! Yet, people weren't hesitant to get married and to bring their children up with discipline and morals (at least more than electronic toys).

Socialism or welfare is not the culprit. Extreme Whiggish 'there is no such thing as society' individualism is the problem.

You don't understand the Bible. The canon was voted on by ecumenical councils (bishops). The problem with the OT was known then.

  • The OT was included nonetheless because of the sense of a need to prove a continuation from Jewish prophecy to Christ's time. However, the Church traditionally ONLY referred to those parts of the OT (=Jewish Torah + books of Prophets & Holy Writings in Hebrew/Aramaic) that referred to the coming Christ.

Only wacko neoconservative & Zionist-leaning churches (mostly out of the US) stress the whole OT as the literal word of God.

  • You ridiculous libertarian atheists bash the church and act like it is the root of this or that evil...the Church is weak in Europe but have wars stopped? Was the Iraq War caused by religion? Traditional Christianity OPPOSED IT. Secular neoliberals CAUSED IT.

You think young people who don't know their history, who don't understand their ancestral religion (as you don't), who screw around, cohabit, break up, cohabit, break up, are more civilised, more peaceful people than before?!?!?!

  • and let's look to teh US where everyone goes to church and OF COURSE there's no crime. Religion creates conflict, it solves no problems.

  • no, everyone does not go to church, that is an odd stereotype...sure it is much more than in Britain, and your crime rate is still shooting upwards and American crime is stable.

Religion is not a replacement for culture....many Americans have religious faith but little culture...but many Britons have neither. Religion is a part of culture.

  • Don't forget multiculturalism is destroying British culture and undermining American's.

  • Racist.

  • race traitor

  • Race means nothing. One is not a better person because they belong to a particular race, we are not united by our race. You are however a criminal as you have broken the racial vilification laws of Australia numerous times, you silly twat.

  • dude, those laws don't even get enforced

  • Just watch me.

  • But anyway, you are a criminal...

  • talk about name calling

  • but you do not deny you are a racist?

  • The word racist is a multicultural term used to attack white racialists. I want to preserve my race and I am a proud white man. If that makes me a racist, then yes I am a racist and I am proud of it.

  • @supremerat You are a shit - that is for sure

  • and few americans are clever enough to know where they are on a map, or that there ARE other countries in the world, or how to protect themselves against STIs, or family plan. There are americans who love each other and can't get married. Why, you ask, would such a clever, god loving nation be so in the past? The church, religion and that terrible conservative policy it creates.

  • More Americans, however, have high literacy abilities than English. Family plan(ning?)...forbidding gay marriage is backwards? You don't even have full gay marriage in the UK, nor in France, Italy, Finland, Ireland....you also have no answer for your own social problems or Europe's dying birth rate.

America has its own set of problems and many of the same ones Europe has, but religion does not figure among them. If anything, it is a moderating influence on our stupidity.

  • Homosexuality is a disorder. How come Homos make up less then 1? of the population but 30% of all paedophiles are homosexuals?

  • go die of AIDS, faggot

  • Well said Maxime32

  • That's Cyril Smith who won a seat at Rochdale for the liberals. Nothing much to do with helping that evil witch you idiot.

  • Well why the hell is he wearing a red Rossette you stupid plank!

  • You mean at 1:21? It's an orange rosette. It is hard to see, but it's Liberal orange.

  • Cyril Smith was ALWAYS a lilberal - check it out on wikipedia. I can't explain the red rosette. Whether I'm a plank or not doesn't change the fact that Thatcher was and still is a witch.

  • Margaret is much much better than bloody Callaghan!

  • She saved Britian from total and utter collapse i didnt even like her but i sure as heck respect the hell out of the iron maiden

  • I cannot for the life of me understand how the country fell for this wretched person !

My only consolation,as a Liberal, was to knock a Tory off my local council on the same day !

  • Nice one!

  • Love this periode and love the human league. This couldn't be better!

  • The moment that Britain had a real Leader!

  • yes!!!! please view my thatcber playlist

  • god save thatcher!!

  • That was a good little vid. I especially liked that rare photo of things inside the commons before we even got to see it on TV in the late 80's (or was it the early 90's?).

  • Although everyone praised the Conservatives campaign Labour had the best campaign. Callaghan outscored his rivals on appoval ratings and after being 20% behind in March Labour finnished 7% behind

  • David Steel should have won.

  • Here, here. However he stood a greater chance in 1983 under the Allience.

  • Wasn't the Alliance in 1987?

  • The Alliance was formed in 1981 following the SDP and Liberal by-election seat relationship by working together, however the term Alliance was not used until 1983 when David Owen became leader. You are right, Alliance was used in the election of 1987.

  • to echo Sir Cyril Smith, the SDP should of been strangled at birth.

  • The film of Smith at 1:20 is actually part of the film when he agrees to this comment. He looks to the cameraman and pompously nods his head.

  • I totally agree. Jenkins, Williams, etc. should have just joined the Liberal Party and built up support that way.
