maybe you don't live in a major metropolitan area, but we've got a reliable bus system in milwaukee, no commuter rail though. Chicago does, and the el as well, in addition to the CTA buses. Obviously no high-speed rail yet. The U.S. is a large country. We had a population boom and housing grab into suburban areas postwar, and a favorable situation then with OPEC, so suburbia seemed to work at the time, but obviously not sustainable.

Most cities even small ones had public transport or cab service, very rare now. The major cities have bus/train but most suck especially compared to Europe. GM and others were even fined in LA for successfully conspiring to buy up and undermine the pub. trans. but it was too late. Suburb/interstate was undertaken because it was pushed by auto/oil industry. Even the old rail routes are a complete mess because they would choose direction based on which town(s) gave the biggest subsidies to pass.

I doubt the Chinese auto industry will be able to compete against Japanese cars. More importantly, I'm sure there are barriers to protect North American industry against a flood of foreign cars.

But Globalization definitely leveled the playing field between competing countries.

Building public transit in particular has to be given huge focus.

I was thinking about alternative fuels for cars too, but mostly rail systems when I made my (satirical) post below.

Obviously, we have had transcontinental rail in North America for 150 years now, and there are rail systems in Europe and Japan today that are very efficient and clean and extremely fast, but the thing that is holding us all back is that there is a system in place that protects the very most wealthy elites on the planet, and all of them use the oil industry to perpetuate their stranglehold on the rest of us.
