I love reading the comments from the hardcore fans about how much the band sucks now. It's great for me because I have zero preconceptions about how the music should sound, as the only album I've ever really heard by them is Rather Ripped, which I love!

It's the same with the Smashing Pumpkins community, they'll try and tell you the new stuff sucks, because they have a chronic issue of always comparing it to the old material.

If you have no preconceptions towards how music should sound, then how can anyone really believe your opinion is credible? I mean if you had some sort of point to base music around, then it'd actually mean something.

And besides, any artist, be it visual or musical, only has a small window before they burn out. It's just a fact. I love Sonic Youth's first seven or so LPs and EPs they recorded, and I'm fine with there only being a few I like.

I did like MS, didn't love it though.

Not having preconceptions around how music should sound doesn't make someone's opinion any less credible. There is no guideline for how one should listen to music. Besides, if someone likes a song without having any previous knowledge of who created it, they are simply unbiased, which I can see as only being a good thing when discussing the music listened to. This is my opinion.

Probably because it's a much calmer, more mature album composition-wise compared to their previous albums. Not quite the same energy flow as that of the faster-paced punk-influenced noise experimentations of some of their previous albums.
