Good video, my question is...if you are only racking this to the ssecondary for a week and a half, how long did this go in the primary? Just curious on the process since usually you go 1-2 weeks in primary then rack...but they say for best results on dry hopping is to do it last 5-7 days...so how can you do the racking over the hops technique unless you transfer again...Thanks
@hayespublichouse This was in primary for two weeks, although I have actually had some of my brews in primary up to a month. Then was in secondary for about 10 days before I then bottled. If you wanted to rack over the hops a second time, you would need to do another transfer. You could also transfer directly to a keg and add hops directly to the keg for additional aromas while serving. (I hope I understood your question correctly). Thanks for the comment!
There are a couple methods you can use to make it easier for whole leaf hops. One is to put them in a grain bag first, and then just push the whole grain bag into the carboy. You will want to sterilize the grain bag first with iodophor solution and let it dry (as well as add a sterlized stone or marble to make it sink the bottom). Or if adding them loose, like I did here, you can use a funnel and then just use a wooden or plastic spoon handle to push them down through the funnel.
so, my question to you. I just did two things for the first time today. one, I harvested yeast and that was very easy. two, I put whole leaf hops into my carboy for secondary dry hop. That was not so easy. How did you get those hops in there? I probably lost avout .25 oz from hops falling on the floor. Not going to be a big deal as far as I'm concerned, I would just like a better method.
