Alex, the first group of riot police did not put on gas masks, they were switched with younger more aggressive police who had the gas masks. I know because I was there! I watched that video From what i know and from what that video shows those "provocateurs" did not succeed in inciting the protesters and they were removed and it is speculation that because these three existed others must be responsible for the violence. I don't think it follows as well as it seems to.

In the US, police are required to wear name badges as well as police badges. They must identifiable both personally and professionally. I notice none of these Canadian stormtroopers display neither. This is often the case in US as well, but at least there's a law, even if it's regularly flouted by those charged with enforcing it.
