I LOVE Exit Music. Love it. Love it. Love it. Sometimes I sit at my piano and play it all night. Sometimes I call out of work and play it all day. LOVE Exit Music.
I love this song so much. Christopher O'riley truly is a fabulous musician and piano player. He has a wonderful talent that not many people posess. Amazing.
He nailed this song completely. I loved every second of it. I was going to harshly judge the build, but just watching you can tell he knew it had to be epic, he got into it, and absolutely blew me away. No complaints here, it was awesome!
I think I hear an oops around the 3 minuite mark... but enjoyed. We enjoy the whole album, a different take on Radiohead. Have you heard Chopin 's Prelude, opus 28, no. 4? Interesting to compare the two.
i've heard many people talking about the similiarity of that Chopin's piece with Exit Music... and some time ago I found something interesting on youtube.. One guy has made some kind of a mashup of the tracks. i think you need to check it out. type "jack conte radiohead chopin" you'll get it
i hope his next arrangement will be of last flowers by radiohead. i love chris on from the top. never realised he sort of looks like robin williams. was this played at nyu?
It's sort of strange that he doesn't even play all the notes that are in his sheet music. To anyone else that is learning the song, is it just me or is his right hand extremely simplified in this performance? He's using a single finger for the earlier chords.
Does this mean that this performance is an earlier version? Because frankly, I find simplifying the right hand like he does in this presentation to be much more beautiful than the sheet music would suggest.
I agree with you in that he sometimes over complicates the harmony, maybe in order for the piece to feel more "virtuoso"... who knows? Radiohead is minimalistic all the way, he does his own work a favor when he doesn't try to turn it into a technique show off.
He's playing one note with his right hand at the beginning. The first "verse" is indeed one note, but the second time he comes around, those notes should be chords. Look closely at his right hand, and listen to the sound he produces, there's no way he's playing a chord.
Listen to when he actually starts playing chords (much later than what is written in the sheet music). Those chords are very distinguishable (even the softer ones).
Christopher O'Riley's website has links to where you can buy a booklet of the sheet music. It's well written, the arrangements are quite similar to his albums' versions.
its amazing how well radiohead songs translates into a medium of music such as piano. if only the entire world knew how incredible of a job their songs did of describing pure human emotion.... if they did, it'd be a better place.
I'm not doubting that he's a Radiohead fan, but did anyone else notice that he mentioned that this song was featured on the soundtrack of Romeo and Juliet? The only Radiohead song on THAT soundtrack is Talk Show Host...another amazing song. Anyway...I love both versions and I love that he put his own spin on it.
Exit Music (For a film) was actually written for the end credits of Romeo + Juliet - hence the title. But the band was so happy with it that they asked Baz Luhrmann to leave it off the soundtrack album so that they could use it in OK Computer.
Tom york wrote this song specifically for romeo and juliet, but it was dropped by the producers probably because the ending lyrics 'we hope that you choke'.
Well, he is doing his own transciption, and Thom Yorke gave him approval AND compliments...Chris O'Riley is a hugh fan of Radiohead, and is also a revered classical concert pianist in his own right.
That's pretty ironic seeing as how its titled "EXIT music for a film". And you put it at the BEGINNING of your film and all. That's totally Hollywood.
My favourite part is right at the beginning when he's all like "I'm totally not looking at the keyboard" and the audience is like all "woah" and he's like "yeah, bitches."
Lol... I'm a HUGE HuGE Radiohead fan. And they are superb songwriters. But seriously, comparing to mozart or any big composer is way over. They almost invented music.
achingly beautiful. I have heard Chris play in person both classical and his Radiohead/Elliot Smith. He is truly genuine and can play the piano with awesome virtuosity.

Don't really see how you find Radiohead to be minimalist...
notoriousspb 3 years ago
No...
I think you'll find it's fairly accurate to the sheet music... It looks that way to me anyway.
The whole first verse is only single notes...
I think he is just really really good at bringing out the melody with his pinkie.
Although... the third time he plays the "verse" thing it might be a little more simplified.
Great performance anyhow! =D
NiceDream114 3 years ago
Hey NiceDream114, I'm really confused.
He's playing one note with his right hand at the beginning. The first "verse" is indeed one note, but the second time he comes around, those notes should be chords. Look closely at his right hand, and listen to the sound he produces, there's no way he's playing a chord.

Exit Music (For a film) was actually written for the end credits of Romeo + Juliet - hence the title. But the band was so happy with it that they asked Baz Luhrmann to leave it off the soundtrack album so that they could use it in OK Computer.

A) Thom Yorke
2) its in the credits

And the reason it's not in the soundtrack is because Thom asked Baz to leave it out so they could put it on OK Computer
xfrolickerx 3 years ago
Are you sure Thom Yorke wrote Exit Music specifically for Romeo and Juliet?? I think not.
Soulstorm9000 3 years ago
actually. He did.
The Romeo and Juliet movie people needed a soundtrack, and Thom Yorke was more than happy to help out.
and a little later the song was put on OK Computer.
you can hear this song at the ending credits of that movie. (it was made in the 90's and i know i've seen it, but i dont remember much else about it)
Also listen to the song! it makes sense. Romeo and Juliet die together in peace. They hope their fathers choke.
