yeah, on Bonamassas website forum (where he comments frequently) he went into detail as to why he no longer plays Fender Strats anymore. He said not only was he sick and tired of SRV comparisons, he noted that Fender copied his gold sparkle strat and started producing nearly exact replicas of his guitar without any consideration of at least talking to him about it first. He said his was pretty much one of a kind and Fender flat out stole the design and massed produced it.
Bonamassa stop playing Strats, well newer strats because he said he was sick of SRV comparisons even though he really doesnt sound like SRV. Joe came down hard on people who clone the sound of SRV...saying they are good players but copy SRV waaay too much...from guitars with initials, fender amp with a tubescreamer...etc etc Joe now plays Gibson Les Pauls and has a sig. LP coming out soon. He got pissed @ Fender cuz they copied his gold sparkle strat without his permission giving him no credit
is that why he switched? i saw him say that he just wanted a new sound cuz he played the strats for so long. but yea i never understood the comparisions to him and SRV. he sounds more like clapton and eric johnson than anyone else. he has his own sound really but those two players usually come to mind when i hear him.
i hear some stevie in him but he takes influence from everywhere. i saw him live recently and the man can play and i talked to people who met him and said he is so humble.
@Soulshine59 sure theres SOME influence there. but even when you watch him as a kid, he doesnt really play like stevie. and hes always stated the british blues scene to be a bigger influnece as well as guys like rory gallagher and i hear that a lot more than SRV. also obviously some eric johnson thrown in. but a bunch of the people that joe likes, SRV liked too. so the similarites might actually be from there.
i totally agree. i have always felt that he was a player all his own. everyone just assumes because he plays a strat and uses a fender amp that he is ripping or Stevie when in reality that's a big chunk of the blues world. but you make a good point there is some Eric Johnson in him. he really has a good mix of influence that makes him unique.
You he copies srv. Thats how he wants to sound. Hes a guitar guitar player but its not there. Not like srv at least. Its so fake. I don't like this guy. Shut up!
i think kenny wayne is just too technical with his playing, there's nothing wrong with being technical but too much of that is eventually gonna hinder his creativity. on the other hand, john mayer, though not a purist as kenny wayne has managed to get away from the SRV style and search for his own sound
i think kenny is good. his aim is that SRV sound. his style just seems to miss that yearning. His sound may have a too much of a scientific approach? I dunno... I have a few of his cd's. Sometimes though, it doesn't sound genuine. He has talent but I think he missed something along the way that has nothing to do with his approach to guitar but maybe to life. It's good, BUT something just isn't right.
That kid's a spoiled asshole. You can just tell by his arrogance that he was handed everything his entire life. He has talent as a guitar player, but his over zealous worship of SRV just kills anything he would let come out of the guitar naturally. There was only one SRV, so let's leave it at that Kenny.
Man he copies to much SRV,its unbeliveable. He should start makin improvisations, some new great songs, because no matter what he says in the interview his sound, licks and especially aproach is nothing more then copying SRV in any possible way, take for instince cover of Jimi's Voodoo Chile (Slight Return).Man every single note is screaming SRV,SRV.
Blues has the base that never leaves. The fair weather fans come and go. Blues actualy has a formula that is sad and happy which is life. It is theatre, it is life mixed...
believe it or not kenny is really good with his own style but the srv licks is what sell and the consumers are the cause of that crap. i heard him live and thamk god he didnt play anything off any of his cd s
Basically, this tour is amazing. Period. Hubert Sumlin is great! I feel like i'm not worthy to see a show with these legends. Kenny is a legend of this generation and it's great to see Hubert and Kenny bridging the gap...
Poor ol' Hubert didnt get to say anything because that little fucker wouldnt STFU.

I think all the Kenny haters need to shut up. I went to high school with Kenny and I play music since I was 8 and I love that Shreveport boy made it!
