When you said in part of the video the student should "throw" the sticks/motion that is a real clue to those who have issues with movement around the drums. What I tell students is to play the motion, not the sound. The motion makes the sound. A fluid motion makes a relaxed sound, a stiff motion makes a stiff sound. As Freddie Gruber use to say, "how you do what you do, is as important as what you do."
Well done video. About the comments on the length of the lesson. I personally don't have an issue with the time of the lesson. If someone picks it up quickly then they can stop whenever they wish. If a beginner is watching then they get to hear the information again. If you enjoy teaching it is the same as playing you are in no rush to do it quickly. What I hear in the criticism is a sensitivity issue with the one who complains. Again well done!
Great teaching (not every great player is a great teacher); great info, extremely helpful and insightful. I agree with Johnnyzing, though: less talking and explaining, just say it and then do it. Awesome videos, Conor. Thanks.
Your heart is in the right place and your intention is right with it. Now take that 10 minute video and make it a 5 minute video without talking so much. Your concepts are great. Just say it...then do it. It so funny...many drum teachers teach as if drummers are slow thinkers....and over explain. You have gold...just say it, then do it. 5 Minutes next time. My drum videos are 1-4 minutes max. Had to toss that 'max' in there. :-) John-Hans Melcher "TheQuietDrummer"
@johnnyzing The only problem there is, you've either never taught before, or are yourself a quick learner (which I have no doubt of you being the latter). The large majority though prefer complete explanations so there is no confusion and they don't have to come back thinking about questions later. Everything is answered straight away. That is the teachers job on the internet with no personal interaction (though I do get where you're coming from).
there's a lot of terrible drum lessons online but I have to say conor, you're an excellent teacher and these are by far the most informative and useful videos i've found. Thanks very much for taking the time and sharing your knowledge=]
