only you pax would have this great orchestration. great!!!!!!!!! found by mistake. great singer!!!!!!******sounds definitely like gertrude lawrence. ROGHARM found by mistake my good fortune. love violins. the consummerate arrangement. has all my favourite attributes. british singer ==favourite===spelling. GREAT POST THANK YOU AGAIN looking for more record treasures.
@pax41 Reisman has always been one of my favorites also. I love his arrangements. This is what the NY well-to-do heard live at the big hotels where he was engaged to play. I know Reisman knew Gershwin and may have worked with him.
And this was the flip side of "Paradise." Leo Reisman was great. Gotta play his "Easter Parade" (vocal by Clifton Webb of "Cheaper By The Dozen" fame) every Easter (at least). Thanks for all your efforts.
I too enjoy Noel Coward's work - he was an exceptionally gifted composer and writer, could act, paint and even sing ('Mad Dogs and Englishmen/Let's Do It' are national treasures.) As for his charm - in 1973 his last words, on retiring early to his bedroom, were "Goodnight my darlings, I'll see you in the morning" but sadly never did so.
Thank you for that beautiful tidbit about Noel. "Goodnight/Goodbye" my DARLINGS, I think I will always say that to ALL my Darlings when I leave them. It is so warm and loving! :-)))
Bob, I LOVE THIS SONG! I didn't have to read that Noel Coward wrote it, his style is so distinctive. All of his presentations are so romantic and wonderful. I think he must have been the sweetest person with a loving personality. You can just hear the sweetness!
Yes, the sound is great. And the postings are much more professional than mine. This record must have sold well as I have come across quite a few copies over the years. The vocalist sounds a lot like the originator, Gertrude Lawrence. Coward once expressed in a play how potent cheap music (his own) was. I disagree - this is not "cheap" music. Coward was one of the great tunesmiths.
Roger, I like your postings and you have a great collection. I wish I had one of those orthophonics like you and Lou do. I only have a table top Victor VV-VII. It works well for the acoustic records.
Beautiful orchestation as in all Leo Reisman's works. Delighful song. By the way have you seen Norma Shearer rendition in "Privates Lives" in a balcony?
I really enjoy listening to all of Noel Coward's works. This recording has been transferred very well to video: full bass and almost stereo effect. Frances Maddux vocal is great. I have been meaning to comment on your colour text display at the beginning of your videos- The contrast of colours and text work really well with the colours of the posters and artwork. It's very professional. Thank you Bob for a great vidoe.
In the late 20's Reisman made a record with Noel Coward - and so came very close to the style.

Hello, I have this record too on an HMV 78, I love it.
Is it actually Gertrude Lawrence sining under another name?
dan1911a 3 years ago
I don't think this is another name for Getrude. My Rust book list the singer as Frances Maddox only.
pax41 3 years ago
@dan1911a
No, this was Frances Maddox who I personally think did a much better job than Lawrence singing it.
