I´m 35 now. I remember listenning this song when I was a little teenager... It´s strange but somehow I always knew this song will always be part of my life, and will always follow me watching the sea or just feelling the summer. It happend and this song still thrills me as in the past... Greetings from Spain and sorry for my english.
Chris Rea and Boz Scaggs are the MOST tasteful two singers in pop music. They simply exude sophistication and class. And the guitar playing is just icing on the cake.
the great thing about Chris Rea is that there are various versions of his songs - each old vynil 45 single has a b side unavailable elsewhere usually different songs but sometimes different versions- this version of On The Beach is one of them.
I am wondering if it is slower because it is a Japanese venue. It needs to be slower so they can understand the english. You know... like "Please to help me with my English."
I agree with auberged. The instrumental part it's playback but not the voice. (I my opinion). If you check 1:30 you will see that Chris is still playing notes but it doesn't sound.

How can it be? It's lot slower than the original.
And his voice is naturally this good live.

From the sign above the stage, "Montreux," it's the Montreux Jazz festival. Switzerland.
