@thethessaliah well, true, except, i find, the popular stuff is the two extremes, total, or nearly full flat chest moeblobs, or big chests girls, but, fair enough, i have learned that my opinions are different then others by a long shot long ago, so i am fine.

The thing is Sheryl won popularity REGARDLESS of the audience current preferences trends. It's like they fabricated Ranka to be the popular star (while Sheryl the noble heroine) but the audience rejected her and went with the unusual choice. For her personality, actually.
Even Kawamori admitted he had more fun writing about Sheryl than Ranka in the movies. He loved her personality (and sexy voice).

I think her popularity was because she's kind of updated DYRL!Minmay (while Ranka is SDFM!Minmay updated)... After DYRL and her portrayal there, Minmay became equally popular in her decade. The movie made her legendary. That's Sheryl template.
I like this very much. I like Macross, but i think the american version (Robotech) had a better story by combining all three of the original stories, and calling them separate sagas of the same story.
@dnieves1418 I haven't watched Robotech because I was born after the time it hit mainstream, but I don't like the idea of taking 3 completely different animes and sticking them together, no matter what kind of quality it is. It just seems so wrong.
