  • My dad says this goal broke the backs of the Bruins in the series. Considering they lost 8-4, I wouldn't doubt it

  • I think 2012 will be the year Butch get's the call from the H.O.F ; Doug Jarvis as well !

  • Butch Goring was one of my favorite players. He was such a pest to the other teams with his RELENTLESS forechecking. I felt he was truly inspirational to the other team members.

  • Billy Harris and Dave Lewis to LA for Butch Goring and four cups to be won later

  • That's what you call a blue collar goal - "I'm going in, do not have the skills of a Gretzky, but I'm gonna find a way to score with my heart." Way to go Butch.

  • What was wrong with Q in these playoffs. Mike McEwen only played a handful of games.

  • McEwen would seem to forget how to cover his defensive assignments even-strength, and Al Arbour, who was at his height back then, would sit anyone not playing the system. McEwen sat.

  • I cannot understand why Butch (also Tonelli and Nystrom) is not in the HoF. All were much better 2 way players than the bigger, defensive Gainey (on my beloved Habs), and all had better numbers (in fewer games).

Butch is considered the missing piece to the Isles Cup hopes. Bob is an alltime clutch playoff man, especially in overtime.

All were smaller than Gainey and did the same job he did while being better offensively. There is no way any of them should be left out of the HoF.

  • I respect the Islanders as a great team but I dont think they were the greatest dynasty. But I think Goring should be in the Hall of Fame. Theres denying he was HUGE in those 80-83 playoffs. Thats why Bill Torrey got him from the Kings in March of 1980. Tonelli no. Nystrom no. They dont have the stats. Remember Goring was a very good player with the Kings for over 10 seasons BEFORE he arrived on the Island.

  • @ULTRAPOWER1977Habs Who was a better dynasty? There wasn't many of them. You had the Canadiens, then the Oilers, and basically after that the only one that comes close to those 3 are the Red Wings. The Red Wings also had a dynasty back from 1935-1955.It was spaced out but in that time frame they did win 7.But look at what the Islanders did back then.Only Montreal has done 4 in a row,and they did 5 in a row.And when the Islanders did it there were more teams too.

  • BTW, nearly forgot.

That move Goring does in this video to undress Bourque was his signature move. Put together Heart, determination, good hockey sense, good hands and the ability to ride the outside blade of his skates like no one else(because of his bow-legged posture) and you get Butch Goring.

  • As an Islanders fan I felt sorry for Peters back then, he could never beat the Isles in a big game.

  • Everyone says what a great defensemen Raymond Bourqe was. But if you look at you tube he was usually always beat by a speedy foward. Look at the goal by Brad May MAY DAY MAY DAY!!!just went around him like a cone.

  • This was a brilliant move by Goring. One great forward faked a great defenseman out of his shorts.

  • @goalscr12 You do realize that Bourque was easily playing 24-25 minutes a game and sometimes 30 minutes a game. The 2 goals you mention are goals scored late in games. This was a 3rd period goal and Brad May's was in OT. For all these youtube videos which show him getting deked late in shifts or late in games, imagine the countless other defensive plays that he made that people don't bother putting on youtube because they were ordinary by his standard. He was no Bobby Orr, but he was excellent.

  • i dont know why the la kings traded goring

  • Probably because they were not going to win anything with him, and he probably had a high salary. They got Dave Lewis and Billy Harris, two players who were not bad at all, but there's no doubt the Islanders got the better of the trade. I think to understand the reasons for the trade you need to understand in which directions the teams were aiming to goa t that time.

  • It's because Bill Torrey was a genius!!

  • @dzanier By 1980, Harris and Dave Lewis were done. Both of them had gotten slower than they already were. Lewis was a stay at home defencemen who pretty much became a weak link in playoff upsets vs the Rangers in 1979 and the Leafs in 1978. Harris was easily pushed around and was nowhere near as tenacious as Goring. Simply put, they could not perform in the playoffs, they had become passengers who could be replaced among all the young prospects the Islanders had in their system.

  • I appreciate your feedback. Goring was one whale of a hockey player. A tireless worker.

  • Two reasons.

    1) The Isles gave up two solid players to get one in return.

    2) After playing in the league since 1969, the Kings and others felt Butch was past his prime.

    How wrong they were.

  • well said!

  • That was Goring's signature move, make the goalie commit and then make the sharpest turn you ever saw and backhand it into the net.

  • Butch just flat out embarrassed them.

  • Nice goal
