I believe the purpose of the marches are not for actual demonstrations of military prowess, but more a reaffirmation of Chinese pride in their national identity. The US could afford something similar, it might help fix the poisonous division in our nation.

One thing to note is that thousands of soldiers marching in formation doesn't actually show much about a nation's military capabilities. It may be impressive, but wars aren't fought like this anymore. Today better technology, logistics, vehicles, aircraft, and the correct use of small elite teams of units make all the difference.

You're exactly right. That's why the current Chinese army has been watching the US counter insurgency strategies and is planning on emulating them in order to make their army more effective. I believe the purpose of the marches are not for actual demonstrations of military prowess, but more a reaffirmation of Chinese pride in their national identity. The US could afford something similar, it might help fix the poisonous division in our nation.

As for your point concerning American division i am also driven to partially agree. I think that the disunity and distrust in our country is tearing it apart, however such a parade would only spark more distrust of the government, political parties, and the military.

Oh of course. But in today's highly globalized world, I don't think the Chinese are to keen on pursuing any kind of conventional military action. Despite the hot air from both sides, I doubt either the US or China would go to war over Taiwan.
You are right about a military parade might affect the US in that way in particular. It's different for the US than for any other nation because of our particular history that was founded on distrust of a strong central government.

We're separated by the largest ocean in the world, and with the US holding world Air and Naval superiority it would be almost impossible for such a large military to cross it, and then fight their way through a nation as big as their own.
As for the second point... why can't we put that distrust aside? Other nations run fine or even better without it.

And as for trench warfare, I would say its more likely that we go into cyber warfare. THAT, is something we should be scared of. Oh, and I got my statistics from NPR, its an alright resource I guess.

As already stated, Taiwan is being protected by America. The Viets were a collection of tribes that did not become a collection of kingdoms (encompassing northern Vietnam and some of southern China) until after 500 B.C. India wasn't unified until the Mughal Empire starting in 1506 a.d. The QIn empire obviously started with the Qin state which broke away from the Zhou dynasty which was the successor of the Xia dynasty that was founded over 4000 years ago.
