  • Plouc!

  • This sounds awful to me. His tone is so harsh. I have a headache now. :(

  • The small Orchestra Accompaniment is

rightous, as it was not uncommon to transcribe Pianoforte accompaniment to

a String Chorus accompaniment. The tempo is correct at "Nicht so Schnell" Columbias during this period recorded and played at 80rpm instead of 78rpm.

However it must be said that Maestro Goritz does need more vibrato to his voice. his sound is just this side of monotonous. Phrasing is just this side of flat-lining. What a pity.

  • 78timothy, I do wish I was certain of the speed I played this at. IIRC it was actually a touch above 80rpm. Thank you for watching. I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

    Regards, J.

  • This guy is SOOOO BAD

  • Falsche Drehzahl??!!!

Regards, J.

  • Thank you for your comment fuzzbear. It is very interessting to hear the different interpretations at youtube. My impression is that there are two mainstreams. One of them is this very pathetique kind. I like very much Thomas Quasthoff.

  • It's a great tempo to learn this song... he-he

  • Muslica23, (Sorry for the delay in responding.) Since looking on-line I have heard an amazing variety of interpretations of this song! I'm glad you enjoyed it-thank you for watching.

    Regards, J.

  • I'm amazed that there should be so much discussion of the recording speed and nothing about Otto Goritz' remarkable voice. There is hardly a trace of vibrato !Though boy sopranos and falsettists have "white" voices, I have never heard another bass or baritone voice such as this.

  • Yaajnavalkya, Maybe that's why others are wondering about the speed? I have very little knowledge of serious music myself, so I can't judge on my own other that a 'sense' of correctness. This recording has a haunting sensibility to it to my ear. I am fascinated by it. I am pleased you enjoyed it. Thank you. Regards, J.

  • The voice still sounds a bit distorted though. I wonder if it is a little faster. I am wondering because some tenors like to do it in a higher key (between a minor 2nd and a minor 3rd higher). It is very common for this song to be performed in the key of E flat major. Just a suggestion.

  • Cajuncoralman, The consensus among the record collectors I've spoken with is it's at the correct speed. However, as you see from the other comments there's some dissent from viewers here. Nobody's even commented on the other side of the same recording-played at the same speed I might add. I will ask another group of collectors to see if a speed has been noted for this recording. I'll report back. Regards, J.

  • Folks, If any of you think this is recorded at the wrong speed please give the other side a listen. I've linked it above. Tell me if that side sounds alright. Thanks. Regards, J.

  • The recording is at the right speed, because the tune is C major, according to an A a bit less than 440.

  • Micuentaaqui, Thank you very much for the confirmation. I find myself having to guesstimate very often, particularly with classic pieces. Regards, J.

  • i i'm hearing this and the song need more speed!! please more speed!

  • Gpablito14, IIRC I set the speed at 80 RPM for this one. I really don't know but I've heard from a few collectors whom I greatly respect that it's, in their opinion, at the correct speed. I'll have to dig it out and give it a listen at a higher speed. Regards, J.

  • we could argue a lot about this historical interpretation, but it's an interesting document, thanks for posting...

(but was the record at the right speed? ;-))

  • I don't know for sure that the record was at the proper speed. The Columbias seem to sound fairly good at about 78-80 rpm. The Red Seal Victors seem to vary more. However I am just going on, admittedly untrained, instinct. Regards, J.

  • thank you. very interesting-from the 'ethnic series' title to the performer's interpretation.

  • Thank you-for the kind words and the inspiration! Regards, J.
